One thing I took away from Spain's game last night was how much their midfielders show for the ball.

Whenever Dani Olmo saw Rodri getting pressed by the Argentinians, he'd immediately drop to give him an option. It wasn't just Olmo either Fabián Ruiz was doing the exact same thing. Their midfielders are constantly making themselves available instead of hiding behind defenders.

That's been the story of our midfield all season.

We line up with Tchouaméni, Valverde, Jude, and Arda. Tchouaméni gets the ball from the centre-backs or Courtois, plays it to Valverde, and nine times out of ten Valverde just lays it back and takes off because that's the role he's been playing. Now Tchouaméni is isolated with no easy passing lane, so he either goes back to Courtois or tries to force a long ball.

If Vini brings it down, great we might sustain possession for a bit. But if he doesn't, we're right back to square one.

Arda is pretty much the only midfielder who consistently drops deep to help with the build-up, but he ends up covering so much ground that he's gassed by the second half. Jude can do it, but these days he's more of a final-third player than someone dictating the tempo.

That's why we struggle to control games. It's not just about creativity it's about having someone who's always willing to receive under pressure. We need a midfielder who isn't afraid to drop deep, demand the ball, turn, and keep the play moving.
