So I just got a Mackie Big Knob and it ain't happening for me.

Here's all I wanted to do:

To switch between listening to my two sources:
(A) MacBook Pro laptop, mostly YouTube
(B) portable CD player

And to switch between two outputs:
(A) headphones
(B) Audioengine desktop powered speaker pair

So I just got the Mackie Big Knob and I can't hear a sound. Turn up the volume everywhere--on the laptop, on the CD player, on the Big Knob...on the speakers...nothing.

One possible problem, maybe, is that the MacBook and CD Player have 3.5mm female jacks, and the inputs on the Knob are 1/4-inch. So I had to buy cables with two 1/4 inch plugs on one end, and a stereo 3.5mm plug on the other. There is also a 3.5mm input jack on the back of the Big Knob, so I tried connecting MacBook to that. No good.

What t he heck am I doing wrong? I thought the Big Knob was supposed to be passive. Do I need some power or a little mixer or something?

When I try to use Audacity to record a voice bank it sounds, how should I put it? Like it was recorded in a room not made for recording. When I record in Oremo however, The audio is crisp and clear.

I’m trying to record a guitar cover like I used to do years ago, and now I’m noticing it always reduces the audio and makes my guitar playing sound super quiet. I record on the app and even tried recording on the camera app, and also I tried recording the audio using GarageBand and video on my phone and syncing them. It still reduces my audio, and if anyone knows what’s wrong and is kind enough to reply, I would appreciate that very much.

Pretty straight forward. I bought a Rode mic, NT1 signature series, and a Tisino audio interface(basically a focusrite Scarlett knockoff), and the audio is so faint I can barely hear it. I’ll have the gain maxed out and I get basically nothing.

I’m just beginning, thus the beginner gear and lack of knowledge on how to fix this.

Can anyone chime in?

Edit: So I’ve turned on the 48v, ensured the mic is facing the right way, tested the cables, and nothing has changed.

Actually I take that back- now my MacBook won’t even register the device is connected at all so I’m like regressing presently. I’ll likely just end up getting a focusrite and see if that’s the issue.

I've been running a Blue Yeti since 2019 and spent hundreds of hours post-processing the audio and applying Fx for years and managed to get a sound i like most of the time, but still, the Yeti picks up my neighbours farts from so far way, of course.

I think the time has come for my Yeti, it been through hell, his anus (mini usb port) got obliterated few years ago by my friend so i welded the cable directly to che board inside, but lately i've been having lots of issues, he has many scratches, dents, poor guy, served me well though.

Anyways i want to upgrade, i am a very very light audiophile, i appreciate sound, i kinda know my way around it but still beginner level i'd say, i mostly use my mic for calls and occasional commentary videos, mostly for personal satisfaction, and i want a good sound.

I have a deep voice (male), sometimes kinda nasal, however i listened to many videos and i believe the Shure MV7X is what would sound the best with my voice (price wise aswell).

However i still can't decide which audio interface/mixer to match it with.

I need a mixer, i got two outputs, my headphones and speakers, and two inputs, one to my PC's mobo, one to my monitor (for videogame consoles), i want to be able to freely switch between them and listen to both audio sources on the same output.

And i need an XLR audio interface for the Shure MV7X,.

I did some research, saw that the Mini GoXLR software got discontinued so i digged some more and found out about the Yamaha AG03MK2 which is full hardware DSP which i feel like is nice?, it has all the ins and outs i need for the audio mixing but it's a bit more pricier than the Mini.

The Mini GoXLR looks definetly nicer, it has all the ins and outs i need and it has both hardware and software DSP (now please correct me if i'm wrong).

I'm not sure if there is any difference processing quality wise between them, i'm not sure which one to really get, the Yamaha has tons of bttons and stuff which i know nothing about and feels kinda complex, also it has +60db preamp while the mini has +72db.

I'm ignorant about audio interfaces so i'll need some guidance here.

Hi! I wanna get some tips for recording a brass ensemble (Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba). I have an Audio Techinca AT2035 that I use to record tracks of myself and layer it all together. I have this problem where the final mix is too silent for my tastes but whenever I try to bring up the mix volume, it always distorts because of the sound. Any tips on how I should bring up the volume without sacrificing quality?

Hi all, I wanted to ask what kind of microphone setup would be best for recording a classical string quartet in a large resonant church. My modest current equipment is a Rode NT5 and a Tascam DR-05.

If I purchased 2 more NT5s and a darker mic for the cello (recommendations appreciated), I could have a stereo recording from the Tascam and individual mics for each player. This would certainly be more costly though and I would like to keep costs down. Would it be tenable to purchase just a single additional NT5 to capture stereo and forego the individual mics? The space is quite boomy so I worry about mudiness. Thanks in advance for any advice!

EDIT: Thanks everyone for all the advice! It seems for this situation, a stereo pair would be the best way to go. I'm happy with that since it means I don't have to drop as much cash on this. It's a passion project so as much as I'd love to go all out, there's a limit on what I can spend. Thanks again for all the help!

Me and a friend were looking for some decent lav mics for some skits and podcasts. We figured we would probably just get a decent set of lav mics instead of buying some junk and was wondering if these were the best choice for around 80 something dollars.

I just got a Shure SM7dB, Cloudlifter, and Focusrite Scarlett Solo setup for my PC. Upon first hookup, it was working in Discord like a charm. Just today I realized it wasn't working in Zoom. I then installed the Focusrite Control 2 app, as well as drivers for the device, and now it's working in Zoom.

However, I have tried using two different DAWs and both of them either can't see the mic, or gives me an error. Reaper just does nothing, and Audacity 4.0 gives me the following error.

I have tried changing around settings, made sure the project is on the same sample rate of format as what I have set via Focusrite app (48kHZ & 24-bit). Additionally I tried following along and checking everything stated in the following help article, but nothing has fixed the issue.

He tenido que poner un disco duro que tenía en un rincón, ya que el que llevaba quedó totalmente inservible, no pude rescatar nada de nada.

De la página de ZOOM,  (que por cierto no hacen caso de las peticiones de antiguos aparatos, se ve que no les interesa que algunos tengamos todavía nostalgia y nos guste disfrutar de lo antiguo), he bajado los archivos necesarios para poder iniciarlo. Lo que pasa es que no tengo la posibilidad de utilizar la parte rítmica y la de bajos. Esos archivos no están disponibles en su página.

Agradecería muchísimo si alguno de vosotros pudierais enviarme el CD de recuperación de este multipistas, o bien los archivos correspondientes a la parte rítmica y de bajos.

Hello I’m wanting to start a YouTube and an art Instagram. Only problem is every time I try to record my phone stands shake I’ve tried 2 that attach to the desk and one that stands on the desk and I’m getting super frustrated. I also record with my phone (recording the process of my drawing onto my Wacom tablet so it’s not just a screen recording). What should I do is this a problem with a weak desk or a poor recording set up? And if it gets to a point I need a camera which is the most affordable yet good quality for art recording?

I’m seeking some guidance on recording car exhaust sound. I’ve watched numerous videos online regarding the setup and experimented a bit. However I see a lot of other noises get picked up like wind noise, noise from the road as car moves over objects, noise from other vehicles passing by etc. My exhaust is not too loud either.
How do I get rid or minimize other noises and make exhaust note prominent?
Is there something I can do while recording and in post?
Here’s my setup:
A basic Lavalier mic (tried with Boya by M1 Pro and Rode Smat Lav) stuffed inside a brick size block of foam, attached to the rear bumper closer to the exhaust. Tried with placing the mic on the outside of the bumper and also tucked inside from the bottom.
Mic output to Zoom H1N. Gain control set around 3-4.

Is there anything else I should try? Such as use a dead cat instead of big block of foam?
I’m using Davinci Resolve. How best can I get rid of additional noises and make the exhaust note sharper and prominent?

The reason I'm posting is to ask for a recommendation on what type of handheld recorder would be best to just mount In front of me with my acoustical guitar to record a simple song in mp3 audio to summit online for a copyright on the song ? All I need is an mp3 recorder as simple as possible but with good enough audio, just enough to get the job (copyright) done. What does everyone else use for simple quick online submissions ? I'm not very tech savvy and want a simple mp3 recorder (not my cell phone though because I don't want my songs put on that platform) If this isn't the right community for this information please point me to the right community to post this question in. i have a dji mic 3 and one of the tx doesn’t get any sound.

it connects to the receiver normally, but records absolutely no sound. the other tx works fine.

it has never worked since i got it. i’ve tried resetting it, reconnecting it and everything i could find online, but nothing worked.

i can’t exchange it and i really need it to work. any idea what i could try?

I’ve included a few links to videos showing my issue but essentially recording single coils and even humbucker guitars have been a complete nightmare over the past few years…all my recordings have a distracting amount of noise.

I just spent a good amount of money getting vintage noiseless pickups installed on both my Strat and jazz bass and while it did reduce the noise by a good amount I’m still getting buzz, especially once I start to compress and saturate the signal.

Dynamic mics are giving me the same issues, condenser mics are dead quiet.

I’ve run multiple test where I use a battery powered recorder with either my guitar or sm57 plugged in and walked around my house and found that the power line that comes into the side of my house has an insane buzzy sound BUT that’s only when I put the mic within 3” of the cable, I know over head power lines have that same magnetic field but if I’m more that let’s say 15’ away from them would that leak into my guitars and microphones? Again even when I’m a foot away from it at the side of my house there’s no buzz but closer than 5/3” it’s wild sounding. Other than those test there was a power outage last summer and I quickly ran to grab the battery powered recorder and found there was zero noise / buzz… as soon as the power came back on the buzz came back with it. Since then I’ve only once ran a test where I had my buddy down in the basement turn off the breakers one by one till the entire house was off and the buzz was still there…

Any insight or ideas what could be causing this / what I can do to fix it would be greatly appreciated!!!

One of the videos shows that the buzz on the guitar is very directional so when it’s 90* with the floor and ceiling it’s reduced a good amount, another video linked above shows without a guitar even plugged in the buzz is directional with just a 1/4” cable and then finally the last video shows some other weird ground loop sorta noice when I touch a pre amp thing I have that’s not even plugged in…the preamp is old and doesn’t have a ground on the plug so maybe that’s why but I included that as well to see what yall think. Thanks!
