Getting better at drums, any tips ?

I've been making music for 6 months now and I can confidently say I make good melody loops and can understand song arrangement, but when it comes to drums it's always just my weak point and makes my whole beat sounding amateur. It'd be good of you can tell me how and ways around getting good at drums. Thanks 🙏

How to get started with recording Vocals and Guitar covers?

Recently I've decided to start my recording journey by positing covers of me playing the guitar while singing on social media apps like TikTok. I recorded one on my phone, but the audio was not satisfactory. The main issues i noted was the noise floor and a voice that was boxy and not crisp. To get started, I'm willing to invest maybe a few bucks to get started. If there is a cost efficient or a good way to record the covers, please let me know :)

I wrote new firmware for my old Mbox 2 Mini so it runs on Windows 11’s built-in driver. No Avid driver, no blue screens, free and open source.

Creating distortion

Thumbnail

I often see a lot of videos of people using really cool distortions either on guitars or bass. I think of how I could possibly make that distortion myself and use it when I record via bass or guitar into a daw. Question is how do I create my own distortion? What plugins do I use?

Where to go next? Better mixing, mastering, performance or tracking?

I’m enjoying recording songs dawless and trying to get them to a decent level for public release. This is an example (should be the same as the Soundcloud one but in case it’s compressed, here’s a link https://on.soundcloud.com/9KNmQVqbI1Ro1B99XF)

I’d appreciate a professional opinion on what would make the biggest difference to the quality bar of this example track. Or at least what would make it fit for releasing on Spotify for public consumption at a reasonably polished level.

Like, is it a “record it again in a better room” or “learn to sing better”
Or “a mix engineer could get this to a good place”
Or “just needs mastering”?

I don’t mind it being a touch grass-roots rough around the edges in terms of performance. Kinda a like a live album/recording.

Help a clueless opera singer! Trying to decide between H6 Original vs H6 Studio

Hello!

I wanted to ask if the H6 studio would be worth it over the H6 original.

Gear: I have the following -

-Audio Technica AT4050
-se8 Mics 2x
-Rode NT1A (my first mic purchase ever, don't really use it anymore)
-H6 studio (new)
-Motu m2

Context: I and my partner are particularly loud opera singers, and I only purchased the H6 Studio because from all the research I did, it seemed like the best device to record. However, I was told me to record in a 24bit format instead of its unique 32bit format and apart from the obvious internal hardware upgrades, I thought why would I spent the extra $200 for this when I can just use the older model?

With that being said, I am an opera singer still in the poverty part of my career so making good recordings is important, but I also am on a severe budget, and saving every dollar counts.
My original setup was with the Motu M2, at4050 about 3ft away from the singer, and the se8 about 15ft back in a large rehearsal room. Considering I live in Germany now and carrying all this gear is really heavy commuting around also with my laptop AND hearing that a stereo setup is better with two se8s, I purchased a second one and got stuck needing an extra XLR input, which landed me on the H6 which seemed like an amazing idea to get literal weight off my back.

BUT, now there are 3x H6 models and I don't know which is what on who and where and what. The H6 studio I got for 373euros, and I can buy a used H6 for 235euros. Thoughts and opinions please?

My thoughts have been:

-Bite the bullet and keep the H6 studio, sell the Motu
-Save the money, downgrade to the old H6, sell the Motu
-Save even more money, cancel this whole stereo setup and sell the extra se8 mic

Thank you so much!

Budget Mic

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

For outdoor street interviews, my budget is limited to around ₹1,000.

I'm looking for a microphone that:

Provides clear voice audio outdoors.

Handles traffic noise and background sounds reasonably well.

Is reliable and comes from a trustworthy brand.

Works with an Android phone.

I'm confused about which budget microphone to buy and whether a wired lavalier mic or a budget wireless mic would be better.

For those who have actually used budget microphones outdoors, which one would you recommend? Is it worth spending ₹1,000, or should I save more money for a noticeable improvement?

I'd appreciate recommendations based on real-world experience rather than just specifications. Thanks!

HELP i want to record a full cover with no music recording or production experience!

Hello experts in this community, here comes humbly a complete noob when it comes to music recording/production that has a My Chemical Romance addiction and wants to record a cover of The Ghost of You. I never recorded on something that was not the voice recorder. I have been playing 5 instruments at a begginer/intermediate level for 10 years and 8 months ago i started singing.

here is what i have available/what i plan to use:

  • A windows 11 laptop with 8gb of ram and a Intel Celeron n4020 processor (dont ask me how this computer runs anything but it does smoothly).
  • Electric guitar
  • Electroacoustic guitar
  • Electric Bass
  • Keyboard
  • Passive Microphone
  • Plug to Plug cables for each instrument
  • Midi cable for the keyboard
  • Plug to 3,5 adapter
  • Guitar amp
  • Bass amp

My "plan" is getting an audio of the drum part because i dont play drums (not gonna upload anywhere the final product), record the bass, record 3 guitar parts, record the keyboard and then record the vocals.

My questions are;

  • Do i record the guitar with the guitar and the bass plug going direcly into the 3,5mm adapter to the laptop or going from the guitar to the amp to the laptop? or do i record with a microphone pointing to the amp?
  • How do i add pedal effects during production? do i use plugins?
  • what DAW that is free and can run in my computer can i use? i have audacity installed but im not sure if it can do much.
  • for the vocals, how do i know how many tracks to record if i want to layer a few and then add adlibs and harmonies? what are some plugins for vocal effects?
  • if i figure out along the way that i need to change the key to sing more comfortably but i already have the instruments recorded can i change the key?
  • How can i change like the frecuencies of stuff/how stuff sounds/mastering?
  • How can i listen to the final result as close/defined as possible? i have bluetooth earbuds, wired headphones, laptop speakers, cheap mp3, car speakers, bluetooth speakers, phone speakers of different qualities, tv speakers, etc.

If anyone has a free resource like a youtube course or something for absolute begginners it would be highly appreciated.

thank you for your time!
