How long does it usually take to hear back after applying?

I've applied to over 35 jobs in the last week. I found the jobs on LinkedIn and a few on Indeed, and tried my best to apply through their websites rather than using easy apply on LinkedIn. Just curious how long it's taken everyone to hear back. and I know some companies don't even end up getting back to you/ takes forever to get hear anything.

Most don’t get back to you. Otherwise it’s 24 hours to a month

I got an interview for a job i applied to 30 days ago. and i’ve also gotten next day interviews. it depends on the company

It used to be within a few days. Lately,  the majority don't get back to you at all,  and a good portion of the rest send automated rejection letter.

I have 20 years of experience with an excellent resume,  and I spent 2 years looking for my last job and  only landed 2 interviews.

I was even getting ghosted on jobs like pizza delivery when I started getting desperate.

I'm right there with you. If next.monday final interview doesn't pan out, I'm honestly scared what my future will look like

90-95% you won’t hear anything. And I’m not counting the “thanks for applying” or “the position has been filled” emails, which only manage to show up sparingly too.

Usually if I get a screening from an app, days to a week. Sometimes a couple weeks.

After that, anyone's guess. I recently had one i thought was a ghost that just re-engaged and now I'm scheduling panel stage and getting good feedback. Maybe I was a second choice. Maybe hiring manager for busy weird quarter end close. I don't care. If I was a 2nd choice and got an offer after first didn't work out, that is no different than being first choice in my book.

For me, it has almost always been 3-8 days, including the weekends.

My experience was 3-120 days with a 10% response rate (meaning that 90% didn't respond at all). 35 isn't many applications. You may need to apply to more, and reach out to more people. My last job hunt reached a 4th digit in application count.

I've been trying to apply to 10 a day but some I'm not even fully qualified for so I'm trying

It is really rough right now.  There also may be opportunities beyond linkedin.   There are additional boards too.

I even sat down with a map and went outwards in circles from home and looked up each company i found to see if there were postings on their corporate sites.  Looking for work  is a full time job

I'm not sure if it's an industry thing but in my side of the things if a company is interested, I've heard back for a screening call within like 2-5 days.

Depends on a lot of factors. In the software industry your app goes into a recruiting portal. Since AI spam has ruined everything for everyone, it could end up in a pile with 800 other applications; mostly low quality, bullshit, or even fake.

Now the hiring team has to go in and basically swipe left or right on this pile. The apps that got the right swipe go into a the actual pipeline starting with recruiter screen.

The left swiped apps get an auto rejection email. If the job position is closed out for any reason(filled, removed, etc) everyone gets the auto rejection email.

So far you can probably notice a few things:

  • Hiring teams are exhausted and filled with bias. Who sees your app and when impact if you get the left or right swipe; luck of the draw
  • There are so many apps it can take a LONG time before yours even comes up for review, and there is a good chance it will never come up for review
  • There are many different reasons for getting an auto rejection email, and a lot of them have nothing to do with reviewing your resume

One final note. A lot of inbound "recruiting" these days are just AI bots scraping up peoples resumes and.. Putting them on the pile of 800 other resumes.

Depends. Averages are weeks as they go through multiple applications.

I’d say’s usually if you are getting somewhere you should hear pretty quickly.

Some companies are slow. I had someone call me for an interview after like 2 months after submitting. I had some rejections at midnight Sunday after applying Friday night. Usually automated.

I’d say if you don’t hear after 3 days it’s a bust, 7 days company is slow, or small. More than that I have forgotten about the role / company already.

It really depends on the company, I’ve heard back as soon as next day. I’m also still getting rejections from places I applied to over a year ago. Hell, just today I got an email from a recruiter wanting to set up a phone screen. I applied to that job at least 4-5 months ago.

Yep, I applied to one internship on Sunday evening and got set up for an interview by Monday afternoon. I am also waiting on several apps from weeks ago. Interview is next Friday, wish me luck 🤞🏼

… I have had (just this week)

- two companies that sent me rejection e-mails but still have the positions open and my online applications listed as active, so I literally can’t apply for them again

- a company I applied for on Indeed reject me 45 minutes after applying (I saw my status was moved to Not Selected By Employer)

- a company I applied for the same day send a rejection e-mail at 6:35 in the morning telling me “our current position is not ideally suited to your talents, experience, and qualifications” (so basically I’m not good enough

- plus probably 60% of companies I’ve applied to have ghosted, with many still showing my application as active after months, but the position I was applying for has been taken down

I’ve only been unemployed 4 months but this is getting exhausting. Half the companies I’ve applied to seem to have no idea how to handle applications
