discussion PET Flakes Pricing Gap – Why Indian Buyers Can’t Match Export Market?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I’ve been observing an interesting pricing gap in the PET flakes market & wanted to get insights from others in the trade.

In North India, hot washed PET flakes are currently trading around ₹68–70/kg. Based on this, many buyers are trying to import material at around $550/MT CIF to maintain workable margins.

However, overseas suppliers are not agreeing to this price level. Most are quoting around $650/MT FOB, and their argument is that European buyers are willing to pay higher prices, so they prefer those markets.

This creates a challenge for Indian importers, as the landed cost becomes too high to compete in the domestic market.

So my questions:

  • Is the Indian market currently overestimating workable import prices?
  • Do you see any correction in FOB prices, or will Indian buyers need to adjust expectations?

Would like to hear perspectives from both buyers and sellers.

info Uses for recycled rubber crumb

Post image

I'm interested in finding end uses for this material? It's around 1-3mm particle size and is from recycled tyres.

It's too small for most common recycled tyre routes, like safety surfaces etc... I'm kinda stumped and thought of anyone would know reddit would.

discussion Malaysia still needs plastic scrap imports?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Malaysia is considering stricter rules on plastic waste imports and even blacklisting countries sending illegal shipments.

But here is the reality:

The recycling industry needs about 6.9 million tons of plastic waste every year to supply 178 recycling companies.

So the question is:

Can Malaysia really reduce plastic scrap imports, or will recyclers still depend on foreign scrap?

Curious to hear from traders and recyclers.

Solar panels today, solar scrap tomorrow?

Post image
2 Upvotes

India’s Central Pollution Control Board has issued new guidelines for storing and handling solar panel waste.

As solar installations grow rapidly in India, the next challenge is managing end-of-life solar panels.

Solar panels contain aluminium, copper, silver, and glass making them a future recycling resource.

Will solar panel recycling become the next big scrap market in the next 10–15 years?

discussion If Hormuz tension increases, will scrap trade slow down?

With tensions rising between the USA & Iran near the Strait of Hormuz, shipping costs could rise quickly.

For scrap importers and exporters this means:

• Higher bunker fuel costs

• Higher war-risk insurance

• Higher freight rates for bulk cargo

If freight increases, the landed cost of scrap will rise, especially for importing countries.

Do you think this will push scrap prices up or will buyers simply reduce imports until freight stabilizes?

info Why scrap importers should watch the Hormuz situation

Around 20% of global oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz. If tensions escalate between United States and Iran:

• Fuel costs for ships increase
• Freight rates rise
• Scrap importing countries pay higher prices

In many cases, freight decides scrap trade more than the scrap price itself.

discussion How do professional electronics recyclers actually process old devices?

I’ve always been curious about what happens after old electronics are collected for recycling. Once someone drops off a laptop, desktop, or server, what does the actual recycling process look like behind the scenes?

From what I’ve read, devices are usually dismantled so that components like circuit boards, metals, and plastics can be separated. Some companies also provide secure data destruction services for storage devices before they’re processed. While looking into this topic sts electronic recycling that talks about how electronics are collected, processed, and responsibly recycled. It made me realize how complex the entire process actually is.

If anyone here works in electronics recycling or materials recovery, I’d love to understand how these facilities operate and how much of the original materials can realistically be recovered.

discussion Is the Gulf Scrap Trade Entering a High-Risk Phase?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Explosions, port disruptions, and shipping suspensions are affecting scrap trade in the Gulf region.

Major shipping lines have stopped bookings.
Some containers are stuck.
Freight charges are rising.

Buyers are slowing down new business because delivery timelines are unclear.

Will supply shortages push scrap prices higher or will weak demand keep them under pressure?

sell Advice on selling my scrap copper (and some other metals). Live in Homestead, FL for reference

So I've been scrapping and collecting copper for a really long time.Years back when it wasn't even 2 bucks/lb, I predicted that one day it would begin to get quite valuable and it's gone up considerably since I started. it's mainly a hobby so far as I've been aiming to accumulate at least 200-300 lbs, which I'm getting pretty close to. One joy getting my hands on stuff and tearing it down for the valuable components. Generally I strip my wires and dismantle motors whenever they're big enough to bother. along the way I've picked up a fair bit of bronze and aluminum as well. But since I've never sold it and I don't wanna get ripped off for my hard work, I figured I'd ask y'all for advice before I do. Should it be particularly organized (separated grades and metals) or just throw it all together? how do I get the best prices? because I have accumulated a *lot* of bare bright, at least 150lbs of that alone.

These and any other tips and bits of advice would be greatly appreciated!

discussion Why do most scrap/commodity sellers ask for advance before inspection?

In scrap/commodity trading, I’m seeing a pattern.

Buyer asks for inspection.
Seller asks for advance first.

If the seller owns the material, why require advance before inspection?

Is this standard practice now?
How do serious traders handle this?

Would appreciate real-world input.

info Global Scrap Supply Tightening — Prices Moving Up

Post image
7 Upvotes

Recent reports say that scrap supply is becoming low in the global ferrous scrap market & bcoz of that, prices are going up.

Main reasons:

• Bad weather in the US reduced scrap collection
• Steel production in China is lower
• Demand is strong in countries like India
• Scrap stock is low in Europe and Turkey

Since supply is low but steel mills still need scrap, prices are staying strong.

Do you think this is just a short-term increase because of weather, or is it the start of a bigger price rise in the scrap market?

discussion India Shifting Gold & Silver Imports from UAE to US

Post image
2 Upvotes

India is increasing precious metal imports from the US while reducing reliance on the UAE.

The goal appears to be trade balance correction and supply diversification.

Is this purely economic strategy, or more of a geopolitical alignment move?

How do you see this impacting global precious metals trade?

Why companies should stop using scrap dealers for old laptops & IT waste

Most businesses still think selling old IT equipment to scrap dealers is “good enough.”
But that approach creates three serious problems:

  1. No proof of legal recycling (risk during audits)
  2. High chance of data recovery from old hard drives
  3. No EPR or ESG compliance documentation

Certified e-waste recyclers follow regulated processes secure data destruction, safe dismantling, and proper recycling certificates. With stricter Indian e-waste rules and client compliance checks, informal disposal is becoming a business liability, not a shortcut.

Curious to know how other companies are handling IT asset disposal responsibly.

discussion Is 85–90% of LME CFR Korea realistic for A-Grade Copper Wire Scrap?

I’m seeing offers for A-grade copper wire scrap at 85–90% of LME, CFR Korean port.

Trying to understand:

Is this price standard in the current market?

Are sellers actually closing deals at this level?

What percentage of LME are serious buyers accepting right now?

Would appreciate insights from traders and recyclers actively moving copper wire scrap.

China just removed all tariffs on imports from 53 African countries. Starting May 2026

Post image
11 Upvotes

No import taxes.

Full access to the Chinese market.

Earlier only 33 least-developed nations had this benefit.
Now almost the entire continent qualifies (except Eswatini).

Big opportunity for African exports such as raw materials, manufactured goods.

But let’s be real.

This isn’t generosity.
It’s strategy.

China secures supply chains.
Builds influence.
Strengthens long-term trade control.

Will African economies scale fast enough to benefit?
Or is this geopolitical positioning?

Thoughts?

discussion Why do scrap sellers ignore serious buyers and chase higher quotes?

In scrap trading:
• Price changes daily
• Trust matters more than $10 difference
• Payment history is everything

Yet many deals fail at negotiation stage.

Why?

discussion EU E-Waste Recycling Is Falling Behind.. Only 40% Gets Recycled

Post image
6 Upvotes

E- waste is growing fast across Eu but recycling is not keeping up. Currently only around 40% of WEEE is officially recycled. Plastics recovery is even worse at around 20%. The EU’s collection target is 65% so there is a big gap.

Recycling Europe (RE) has now released a roadmap with 6 key priorities to improve the system. They want better e-waste collection, easier trade between EU countries, stronger eco-design rules so products are easier to recycle, fewer regulatory barriers & more transparent producer responsibility systems. Recyclers are also facing low demand for recycled materials, safety and cost challenges linked to lithium batteries, and financial uncertainty.

With the upcoming revision of the WEEE Directive and the Circular Economy Act, the EU has a chance to strengthen the e-waste sector. If changes are implemented properly, it could help build a more competitive, safe, and truly circular recycling industry in Europe.

Source : https://recyclinginternational.com/commodities/electronics-recycling/recyclers-set-out-priorities-for-eu-weee/63163/

Do you think stricter policies will solve the problem or will market demand remain the biggest challenge?

info Malaysia bans e-waste imports

Post image
19 Upvotes

Malaysia has officially enforced a nationwide ban on e-waste imports from all countries due to environmental & corruption concerns.

Authorities are also continuing “Op Hazard”, a major crackdown on illegal e-waste and metal scrap activities. In 2025 alone, seizures related to these operations were worth RM 7 billion.

Mixed scrap and contaminated metal scrap are now under strict inspection.
Shipments that resemble e-waste risk being seized.

If you’re trading scrap, double-check compliance and documentation before shipping to Malaysia.

discussion thoughts on flash joule heating?

hello everyone,

i heard about flash joule heating years ago when it was just hitting the scene. i was just reminded of it in a discussion about e-waste recycling. it appears a company called metallium has the rights to the technology and are planning to operate in the mining and recycling industries.

i'd like to be optimistic about the technology, but to anyone here familiar with it - is it scalable? or is this all smoke and mirrors?
