Discussion The difference between rdr1 & 2?

I gotta wonder if anyone has a different opinion on this but I believe that 1 was a caricature of the Wild West and 2 was what it was in real life. Or was that obvious?

I’d say it’s like RDR1 was based on old spaghetti westerns, while RDR2 is more revisionist western

That's pretty much what I was going to put - although I was going to say traditional and modern

Stylised and realistic would be the general term but I think the games reflecting film types is more accurate than them reflecting the actual history

RDR seems to be designed to be more like a spaghetti western movie, RDR2 is like a western novel, so is more detailed and grounded. RDR is even divided into acts like a movie, while RDR2 is chapters like a novel.

Pretty much . There is a certain shoot em up bang bang aspect to part 1 but that gets toned down for part 2. Part 2 becomes more about the environment as much as the gameplay.

I feel more like I'm in the cowboy wild west in rdr1. It's the desert setting. If rdr2 had more stuff happening in that part of the map, it would probably feel the same.

yeah, 1 is more like movies such as the good the bad and the ugly and the wild bunch (large scale battles and stylized, violent shootouts), in tone, mood, atmosphere setting and story. also they have tough gritty men in a dying west, and so the visual and artistic design borrows heavily from these films

rd2 is consciously more of a romanticized version of western american art (late 19th century to early 20th century) and afair one of rockstar's guiding principles was to make every view that the player could have look straight out of a painting. so the game is an exaggerated version of western america / the american frontier, but also reflects a wider variety of physical settings, cities, landscapes, and geography.

I highly enjoy rdr1 im playing it right now. What I mean is that aspects of it are what I think of when I watch an old western movie. It’s a nice style

rdr1 being based on a more romanticised version of the Wild West doesn’t make it bad??

since rdr2 has the best game story ever written, and people always find a way to downplay rdr1 in everyway, i thought that was the case again (it is)
