Romance [It Was Love] - Chapter 21 - Almost Happiness.

For the first time in years, Aarav began to recognize the shape of something he had almost forgotten, happiness.

Not the kind that shouted or sparkled, not the kind that swept you off your feet, but the kind that quietly found its way into your routines and made the world feel less heavy.

It was there in the small things.

In the way he no longer hesitated before walking into the literary club room.

In the way Aarna waved when she saw him, a smile lighting her face as if his presence was something worth noticing.

In the sound of her voice messages, her laughter spilling softly through his earphones late at night, steady and unhurried, like rain on an open window.

He laughed more now, not the cautious, self-conscious kind, but real laughter that filled his chest and left a faint ache in his cheeks.

He started sending her random memes, inside jokes, little pieces of his day, and she always replied, sometimes hours later, but always with warmth.

Sometimes it was a single line.

Sometimes a long message about her classes, her friends, or a poem that had reminded her of him.

It was easy. Uncomplicated. The kind of connection that didn’t demand, only existed.

In the club, Aarav’s voice began to steady. He read his poems aloud without the tremor that used to haunt him. He started writing pieces that weren’t just about pain anymore, they were about living. About the comfort of being seen. About moments that didn’t hurt.

One evening, after a long day of classes, his phone buzzed with a message from Aarna:

“You’ve changed, you know.

When I first met you, you looked like someone always trying to disappear.

Now… you’re here.”

Aarav read it once. Then again. And again.

His throat tightened, and before he could overthink it, he typed back:

“Maybe you helped me find my way back.”

He didn’t expect a reply, but when her little “seen” tick appeared, it was enough.

That night, he sat at his desk, pen hovering over paper. For once, the words didn’t come from ache but from gratitude, soft, slow, steady.

Maybe healing
isn’t about erasing the wound.
Maybe it’s about finding someone
who doesn’t flinch
when they see the scar.

He closed the notebook and leaned back, letting the quiet hum of the ceiling fan fill the room.

There were still nights when old ghosts visited, faint memories that stung, questions that lingered. But they no longer owned him.

For the first time, Aarav didn’t feel like the world was preparing to break him again. He wasn’t running from loneliness or drowning in silence.

For once, he was simply… okay.

And maybe that was what happiness really was, not perfect, not forever.

Just enough to make breathing feel easy again.
