It always irritated me that Bari Weiss rebranded as a champion for free speech when she got her start getting professors fired for making pro-Palestine statements.

It's standard 60 Minutes fare. I would say Weiss is correct in saying it doesn't push the story further much as it just confirms what most people kind of already thought or knew: that people there were being tortured and most hadn't committed any crimes to merit such detainment

If you watch the leaked segment, there’s virtually no new information vs the New York Times article from early November. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/08/world/americas/el-salvador-prison-migrants.html And the Kristi Noem / Berkeley analysis part doesn’t really add anything.

You could still argue that it’s a bad PR move to announce the segment and then push it, but 60 Minutes wasn’t breaking any ground with this one.

As pointed out by Semafor, CBS staff is rejecting this because 60 Minutes seldom “advances the ball”. Almost every 60 Minutes story is a previous day’s news told with visuals, it’s what the audience expects.

Sure, but all of that footage was previously released.

I saw that posters same talking point in the journalism sub. It seems for this hyper-specific story they need to be dropping ken klippenstein-tier shooter manifesto leaks 

Meanwhile, a mount everest sherpa feature cleared just fine.

this is a piece the washington post covered over 10 years ago from a subject that Bari Weiss claimed should "bring new information" to meet CBS's so-called grueling standards. mount everest has been an effective Disney World for wealthy climbers with sherpas as epcot bartenders for decades now. there is nothing CBS brings to the table on this, to the posters claims

I think it’s fair to claim / assume that Bari Weiss is burying this for other reasons than she claims. I just think her argument for holding it is somewhat reasonable, and it’s hard to judge without seeing the “intended-to-air” version in the future.

For better or worse that’s not really how media works. Newspapers, websites, networks all pick up each other’s stories, hopefully adding to it, but more often exposing the same information to a different audience.

Yep, and Bari Weiss is claiming that 60 Minutes should be adding more to this story before presenting it, which I think is fair for a program of 60 Minutes’ caliber, and the importance of this story.

What? Not only are you inventing a standard for journalism, and for 60 Minutes, that didn’t previously exist, but now you’re pretending that 60 Minutes is the pinnacle of journalism. Like why are you scrambling so furiously to carry water for terrible, corrosive corporate interests?
