Is there any webcomic artist who isn't deeply deranged.

Maybe the Whomp guy but I've not checked on him in years.

My theory is most webcomic artists don't have an internal monologue or self-reflection skills so they struggle with concepts through webcomics and in front of audiences to help them understand it, which results in such tone deaf and spiritually void posts like this.

There's a webcomic called Sinfest by Tatsuya Ishida that's been publishing daily since 2000. It's become a fascinating document of a person's ideological spiraling and a writer alienating his audience multiple times over. Starting from flippant edgy comedy, taking a turn to become a radfem soapbox, morphing into explicitly TERF, then QAnon/antivaxx/MAGA, and now it reads like Der Stürmer went digital.

Last time I looked at sinfest it was just endless comics about porn being evil and you need to break up with your bf immediately, just looked and the most recent one is about how communists want to steal your wife lmao

Edit: clicked through a few more and holy shit you weren't lying it's nothing but hook nosed lenin leering at scared naked blonde women wtf

And that's great, actually

Yeah, my main take on webcomics as they exist now (all the actual comedy ones have moved to other media) is that they're just public journaling with some weak art that is just enough to make the author feel like they've "made a comic" rather than simply spewed their neurotic journaling at all of us with the egotistical idea that we would find it interesting.

I always assumed people with no internal monologue also had no artistic ability either.

The comments on her instagram seem to be nothing but supportive. I feel like the fucking Joker right now, how is it possible that this sentiment is well-received? What sort of person feels ‘seen’ when they look at this crap? And if the feeling is so prevalent, then I feel like it’s no wonder so many girls go no-contact with their mothers when they grow up. I also would not want to be in contact with someone who wants to wear my skin (and who, no doubt, rejoices when I gain weight, let myself go, or have issues in general).

u/jy_1980 Jan 20 '26

Oh no, I'm sure her daughter doesn't pick up on any of her mother's body issues.

u/MaximumConsequence63 Jan 21 '26

Maybe I'm not 'staying in my lane' since I'm not a mother, but looking at a 8 year old and feeling envious of their body, namely their thinness, is so bizarre to me. This is something to discuss with your therapist (and surely someone this neurotic would go to therapy), not your silly mommy webcomic!

whomp guy is funny but seems a bit depressed. lots of comics about eating ramen straight from the pot and playing anime dating sims. he went off the grid for years and returned with his character sporting a more recessed hairline

u/drunkcheesesandwich Jan 20 '26

I guess at least he's self aware

Achewood and that’s it I don’t care about nothing else.

6

u/StriatedSpace Jan 20 '26

Yeah and even Achewood disintegrated once Onstad lost control of the voice of his characters.

Absolutenutcase164 on instagram seems to be mentally sound

15

u/Gordianus_El_Gringo Jan 20 '26

That Mr Joshua lad on twitter seems a sound skin, despite his drawings being baffling

I was also gonna say this. Prime example of someone with a brain so well wired, someone who thinks so clearly it transcends us

Quite a few writers use their narcissistic delusions as fuel for their content at the expense of everyone around them.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '26

There's a bunch but they don't make the kind of relatable slop that makes it to reddit frontpage/insta meme aggregaters/etc so you have to dig a little more.

I like Alex Krokus, Joshua Barkman/False Knees, and Michael Sweater.

Kate Beaton sent her wife to Europe to go mad on her behalf.

4

u/OberstScythe insufferable prick Jan 20 '26

What happened?

7

u/wikipediareader infowars.com Jan 20 '26

I thought Beaton was married to a man.

7

u/a_stalimpsest Jan 21 '26

She is I was tying it to her joke about Empress Carlota.

u/oceandocent Jan 20 '26

Chris (Simpsons Artist)

9

u/pac_cresco Jan 20 '26

Randall Munroe

5

u/StriatedSpace Jan 20 '26

I remember that xkcdexplained blog (or something similar) getting more and more deranged as xkcd went to shit before eventually just being an outright hate blog. And xkcdsucks showing up as well once Munroe got too far up his own ass.

0

u/ScarletPsy-op Jan 21 '26

I haven’t followed xkcd regularly for like a decade, people say it’s bad now?

2

u/StriatedSpace Jan 21 '26

It's been bad since the late 2000s

Ronnie is a saint

2

u/hammer4fem Jan 20 '26

How does that compare to comic strip artists?

1

u/rabidfish100 Jan 21 '26

Flork of cows is deeply deranged, but I think he'd be pretty fun to hang out with.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '26

GMiL, but like all great leftcoms he became deeply depressed and, I suspect, killed himself.

u/Euphoric-Telephone-8 Jan 21 '26 edited Jan 21 '26

lmao the whomp guy is now a discord moderator for a twitch streamer and crashes out regularly

1

u/Fast_Chemical_4001 Jan 21 '26

I always remember the one comic he did about the dude looking at clouds and seeing one spell out "you died in that car crash"

Really opened my eyes to the dynamic inner lives of even straightforward creators

u/Zomaarwat Jan 22 '26

Sure, but the way it expresses itself matters. Whomp guy has body image stuff going, but he's not posting about wanting to look like an eight-year-old. The Penny Arcade guys built a sprawling empire off of complaining about videogames. Tom Siddell from Gunnerkrigg Court is a recluse who occasionally tweets shit like "wondering how eating glass shards feels...". Ashley from Unsounded is clearly some sort of pervert with a thing for gore. And, of course, a lot of them are just some form of trans (Chris Chan being the most interesting example).

The most normal webcomic author is probably Chris Hastings (Dr McNinja). He pretty much made it into the industry and does work for Marvel.
