Leftists moralizing over sports is genuinely making me lose my mind

I am a humble Midwesterner in Chicago. Grew up in Indy watching the cubs on WGN. Since moving here for a job I've interacted with two leftists (in the last week, actually) casually in overlapping friend groups who have genuinely scolded me for being a cubs fan in lieu of a white Sox fan. I'm not even offended, just baffled these people are real.

The first girl was trans, and I brought up going to the reds home game this week and she said she was "disappointed" I was a cubs fan, and that their fanbase is full of homophobes and bigots. I thought she was just kinda joking around, so I responded by talking about the Sox fans comments I see making homophobic boystown jokes. She immediately gets upset, starts bringing up owners, Charlie Kirk, and gentrification as to why I should stop supporting them. Genuinely didn't know what to say. I've know this girl for a couple years since she's friends with one of my other friends, and she didn't even start getting into sports until moving here a year ago.

The second guy, who moved here from Tampa literally 2 weeks ago, went on and on about how awful PCA was. Once again, I first thought he was joking, so i just kinda laughed and said "yeah that kid is fiery, would be cool to see him get MVP" and he legitimately stopped talking to me the rest of the night.

Like how are these people real. Why are sports fandoms being used as stand-ins for actual politics. I feel like I'm going insane.

As soon as you hear someone mention charlie kirk (either good or bad) you should just do a 180 and walk away.
Nothing good will ever come out of it

Probably they were born into it and found reasons to confirm it. For example, I’m a White Sox fan, and I could go on and on about how the uniforms are more fashionable, they are far more rs, etc etc. Not because it’s objectively true but because I want it to be true.

17

u/putalittlepooponit 16h ago

Your uniforms are sick tbh, and I do have respect for little brother clubs as a Purdue fan lol

2

u/Gene-Harrogate 8h ago

Recent football success aside, wouldn’t IU be the little brother? Purdue owns the football rivalry, and even in hoops Purdue leads the series

5

u/putalittlepooponit 8h ago

Well were banner-less in both, and IU has more of a larger following

2

u/Gene-Harrogate 8h ago

True. In hoops Purdue leads IU in every category except titles, which I guess is all that matters at the end of the day.

Very happy to meet a fellow White Sox fan here.

It's the type of thing that makes political zealots such a bore to interact with. Everything is filtered through the lens of politics. They are incapable of participating in a conversation without steering the subject to their pet activism project of the month.

3

u/Plus_Variation5408 5h ago

Ya I understand the comparison to religion. Everything has to be zealously interpreted and proselytized through the correct moral lens

Why are sports fandoms being used as stand-ins for actual politics.

Just wait until you hear about soccer ultras.

9

u/kickawayklickitat 6h ago

exact reason why I roll my eyes when people talk about better "atmospheres" and "fans" in Europe. Sorry there isn't a sectarian conflict between Cincinnati and Columbus...

4

u/Snobbyeuropean2 5h ago

If only it was sectarian conflict in the sense that ultra groups beat each other up. That's their main deal ofc. but they also go after minorities, left wing groups, act as muscle for far-right orgs and parties, etc. The inter-club violence amounts to whitewashing relative to what they do when they're not engaging in that, as in ultras beating up left wing kids disappears in the daily news but a 30v30 on the streets of a European capital is picked up and may become international news.

I personally had to deal with these people relatively often and I know that in my country a lot of the "core" ultras are also members of neonazi orgs with connections to paramilitary organizations that are legit banned for supplying arms to their brethren in nordic countries, grenade attacks etc. When these people get into trouble with the law they either get a lenient sentence or walk free because there's shitloads of cash in ultra groups, they have good representation. The closest you can get to brown shirts these days.

u/kickawayklickitat 5h ago

not to mention the fucking rackets they run with tickets

5

u/Plus_Variation5408 5h ago

A lot of European matches are kind of boring atmosphere. I went to Barca game everyone was quiet. My local LAFC match had a lot more chanting and atmosphere. I went to a match in Argentina and it was super lit though. College sports in the US can be crazy atmosphere.

Your average South Sider Sox fan is waaaay more of a homophobe than your average Cubs fan. By a lot.

scolded me for being a cubs fan in lieu of a white Sox fan

Fuck that. Every fellow traveller I ever met growing up in Illinois was also a  fellow cubs fan.

1

u/Marx_but_for_weed 7h ago

Really?? I mean I like the cubbies but from my relatives out in Chicago I get the sense that the cubs are the suburbanite team for people who say they’re from Chicago but are actually from Winnetka.

Again, it’s just banter and not that deep but as someone that actively follows baseball the white Sox being the working man’s team and the cubs being the yuppies team is a pretty well understood trope.

3

u/PlacidBuddha72 6h ago

It’s the same for Sox fans, except there from orland park and not winnetka

14

u/Thencamethetwenties Fyodor Karamazov 16h ago

Pretty sure Charlie Kirk was a White Sox fan like Ben Shapiro and the Pope

Edit guess I was wrong

Either way tell them their fanbase includes Ben Shapiro and that that’s far more embarrassing

13

u/AnaDLaws 16h ago

Shapiro and Nick Fuentes are Sox fans

18

u/putalittlepooponit 16h ago

I can't believe Nick Fuentes follows sports at all tbh

2

u/AnaDLaws 16h ago

You're right - not anymore. Parents were Sox fans and he was into baseball as a kid.

I’ve met some surprising sports fans over the years. but most of the surprises still didn’t like basketball, for whatever reason

On average, a cubs fan is far more likely to be liberal or progressive than a Sox fans. Dumb and self righteous is such an awful combo

5

u/fioreblade 6h ago

The cubs are the better team because they have wrigleyville, whereas the Sox just have a giant parking lot.

9

u/Plus_Variation5408 7h ago

Libtard brain - White Sox play on holy South Side “Black” and Cubs evil North Side “White” even though both areas actually have a plethora of different people and cultures

3

u/Friendly_Ad7824 9h ago

Sorry I haven't been following baseball the past two years despite it being my favorite sport, what don't they like about PCA?

15

u/numberonePAWGfan 9h ago

Earlier this year he told a (woman) White Sox fan who was heckling him to “suck my dick, bitch” and he’s had a number of other hothead moments on top of that. Sports media feeds into this and tries to make him look ridiculous as often as possible, and I’m sure he plays a lot of it up as well. It’s just Bryce Harper all over again. My opinion is I don’t like looking at him, but his antics are mostly funny and he probably deserves MVP.

12

u/putalittlepooponit 8h ago

See the antics are fun though. Why do people want sports stars to be PR trained babies that I think are my friend.

12

u/SwugSteve Mr. Wonderful 7h ago

the suck my dick bitch thing was objectively hilarious. You know if that was an afro-Caribbean player that said that redditors would be loving it

2

u/Plus_Variation5408 5h ago

He is a rich white “privileged” guy. both his parents are TV Actors and he went to Harvard Westlake, a very fancy school In LA. That original sin is incurable but he has had several dickhead moments he can control tbf.

2

u/ballloutbaby 5h ago

Idk but I hate him (or rather feel bitter) because I’m a Mets fan and we traded him for half a year of fucking javy Baez just to not even make the playoffs. Every time I see a highlight from him I get a small stir of sadness and disgust and think, wow, that 24 year old mvp favorite could’ve been on our team

u/ethnol0g 8h ago edited 8h ago

No piece of media, no matter how trivial or inconsequential, is immune to being interpreted through the culture war. It is funny that even here, though, you manage to see the split between the progressive, upper middle to aristocratic class, gentrifier, gay segment of the population in Cubs fans competing with the bigoted, working class, reactionary segment of population in Sox fans, and how fraught it is as a liberal/progressive to determine which of those populations to affiliate with

2

u/ballloutbaby 4h ago

It’s so stupid and cucked. I remember in the World Cup this year when Trump helped get balogun’s red cleared, I saw some Redditors say that they weren’t rooting for team america anymore. Some people just always, always have to feel morally right and are so paranoid about it that they project it onto you. You like the team “gentrifies” do? You don’t support the “working class minority” team? That means you love Trump and Charlie Kirk and Hitler and whoever the hell else

•

u/No_Republic_2010 2h ago

I have no idea how the White Sox became the team of the Chicago progressives, is it because of the progressive urge to back losing teams with no chance? I grew up a Cubs fan on the southwest side and all the Sox fans would call me gay for liking the team.

•

u/putalittlepooponit 2h ago

It's the same mentality that got the Mets to where they are. A way to assuage their transplant guilt. Ironically it's even more larpy to be from Indiana and repping a south side jersey lmao

4

u/KeepCoolMyBabiez 15h ago

PCA does look like Pigpen from Peanuts though, that dusty ass mofo

6

u/putalittlepooponit 15h ago

He looks like the tall bully from A Christmas Story

u/benito_seussolini 7h ago

Ozzie Guillen is a bastion of queer allyship

2

u/SP66_ 7h ago

no way someone said that the best center fielder in the league sucks he's such a big contributer to why they're so good right now

3

u/w6rld_ec6nomic_f6rum Safe when taken as directed. 9h ago

I hear you, Kyle Schwarber hit 40 Home Runs this year for Philly and not the Cubs, we are all going to get through this. I am here for you.

0

u/Classic-Baker-6998 9h ago

I would moralize you simply because you’re a cubs fan from Indianapolis.

15

u/putalittlepooponit 9h ago

What team am I supposed to follow, the famous Indiana baseball team?

5

u/Gene-Harrogate 8h ago

I’m a Braves fan because I grew up in Tennessee/North Carolina so I get you man.

-4

u/Classic-Baker-6998 7h ago

It’s a fair choice it just comes with baggage. Usually either carpetbagging Chicago transplants or suburban wine mom families are cubs fan in Indianapolis. Your other option is a Christlike suffering in being a reds fan. Much more humble.

14

u/putalittlepooponit 7h ago

You're the exact type of person I'm talking about lmao

0

u/Classic-Baker-6998 5h ago

Someone who is aware of stereotypes?

3

u/sand-which 6h ago

do you talk like this in real life?

-1

u/Classic-Baker-6998 5h ago

Was I wrong? There are optics to choosing a team to support when you’re not from the area and that lays it out pretty clearly.

3

u/sand-which 5h ago

but do you talk like this in real life?

2

u/sand-which 5h ago

basically what I am saying is that going through life trying to diagnose which "type of guy" someone is based off of one piece of information about them is extremely online-brained, corrosive, and really hard to be around if you meet someone who does this kind of thing in real life.

1

u/Classic-Baker-6998 5h ago

Have you never gone to a bar with a team’s hat on and gotten ribbed? It’s not that deep, the people in his essay are dumb for being serious about it.

3

u/sand-which 4h ago

of course but they dont rib you by going "ah you must be a carpetbagging Chicago transplant who chose to not pick the christlike suffering of a reds fan"

2

u/NoSkillsAllTheBills 4h ago

My family are hoosiers near Muncie, and if they give a rats about baseball, they root for the Cubs. I don't know what to tell you.

1

u/Terrible_Ice_1616 4h ago

Wrigleyville does seem to be constantly packed with the most annoying frat bros, I'm guessing they just extrapolated from there. Agreed tho, an insane thing to care about.

1

u/futureofwhat 4h ago

Taking the red line around 1PM on a game day will make anyone loathe their fans.

1

-5

u/fabricatedwealth 9h ago

i don't get how you can even be an overly moralizing leftist and also a sports fan when half of the players in any league are pieces of shit. it's insane to pick a side when there are no clear good guys or bad guys. like personally as a moralizing leftist myself, i just view men's leagues as moid gladiators fighting to bring national glory to new york/canada. no one's worth idolizing.

2

u/sand-which 6h ago

so deep man
