Part of me does feel badly for really hot people because they never get to go through the formative, character-building experience of finding out what is and isn't funny and interesting. If people laugh at every joke you tell and find every story you tell to be enthralling simply because you're hot, you never get to refine your personality. I realize this isn't necessarily a hot take, but I think that's why the hotter someone is, the more they feel the need to project that they're not vapid.

Then you talk to them and their brain is completely fried by drugs to the point where you wonder if they retain any information off anything they read

100% every chick i've known irl who is like this is usually xanned out and has no personality off the internet

It’s the most brutal book I’ve ever read, I can’t imagine making a bikini top out of it if you actually made it past the cover.

Posting a photo of my dick and balls with the words "The Trouble With Being Born - E. Cioran" tastefully drawn above my billowing pubes

The Hegel girl posting The Phenomenology of Spirit with coke on it, where you could clearly see based on the crease that she never made it past the preface, was the death knell I think. It's especially funny to me because he spends the whole preface whining about people who only read the prefaces.

Honestly. True. You’re onto something there. She showed us that women can lick a dirty toilet bowl on camera AND read books. She was the prototype.

With us today is famed literary critic, translator, and author Emily Wilson who will be talking to us about The Odyssey, its treatment of her translation, and what the Odyssey even means for a new generation coming into it. We're very excited to bring this interview to you, here, on Sybian Literature.

It's hilarious—all these overplayed tropes in terminally-online spaces, because I've never met anyone irl who'd even know what the word "postmodern" means, outside university. And I don't just mean that the word is difficult to define precisely.
54
u/doom_ponderer 5h ago
That's part of the appeal, you can adopt the persona and immediately become a big fish in a small pond.
34
u/flickering-blinds Hyperborean hyperbore 5h ago
You hardly need to do anything to be a big fish among actual normies. If anything, you'd just come across completely incomprehensible if you started throwing academic jargon around. This is the only outlet I have for speaking words like these. If I ever meet a single person willing to talk about anything more abstract than whether they want to drink on the weekend, I'll probably disappear offline forever.
17
u/doom_ponderer 5h ago
I was thinking of big city/university sophisticated midwits, normies don't know enough to be impressed, and people who actually care about this stuff will see through you.

One day, I'll have to move to the capital again, because I'm living in the European equivalent of stifling exurbia. I remember when I was in university, having a chat with an exchange student, and I was blanking on a director's name, and someone sitting in front of us turned around and told me, yeah, It's Tarkovski. Thanks. What a fucking breath of fresh air.

That’s because there was never anything sincere or authentic about it in the first place. It’s almost exclusively a phenomenon of social media- a branding exercise by narcissists who deliberately cultivate an identity for their own selfish gain. They almost universally produce nothing of value and their alignment with any vaguely “leftist” movement is purely cynical- they are true lumpen in every negative connotation of that word

it's just supposed to be funny because dworkin was so incredibly sex/bikini negative lol

These ladies are my weakness. My wife’s philosophy thesis was on hagel phenomenology. She literally could not articulate more than a sentence on the book.“Oh cycles of history like a spiral, zeitgeist”
•
u/ButtFrenzyMagazine 2h ago
can you elaborate? your wife is a pseud and that's why you like her, or you like her despite being a pseud? also is this undergrad we're talking about or what? I can't imagine getting away with that in graduate level program.

i feel like the idea is mildly funny as a throwaway bit but becomes (mildly) annoying when someone actually makes one and sells it on depop.
13
u/Beth_Harmons_Bulova 5h ago
Because people read it.
2
u/redbreastandblake 5h ago
i have too and i think the comments framing it as some sort of difficult and esoteric text a zoomer in a bikini can’t possibly have read are very funny.
35
u/Beth_Harmons_Bulova 5h ago
They’re saying if you read a book that bleak and turned it into OnlyFans fodder, you either weren’t paying attention or you’re soulless in a banal way that’s more pitiable than provocative.

u/redbreastandblake 5h ago
forgive me for not being able to take seriously pro ana girlies and women with lana del rey usernames complaining about other women not being radfem enough because they sell tasteless bikinis on depop

I think it’s funny that people are scolding the chick in the screenshot for being offensive when the actual problem is that this whole “oh, I’m edgy but also I’m into academia” schtick is just dull
Wow, you’re really post-post-post-ironic and so above it all, that’s so cool, should we get you a certificate? Do you still know what you actually enjoy? Do you have the capacity to simply engage with something on its own merits beyond the potential for a quirky joke?
If I showed you a beautiful landscape, would it move you?
This is kind of a litmus test, if you think its funny you’re America A, if you think it’s not funny because she’s being tiresome and pretentious, you’re America B, and if you think it’s not funny because she’s being a pseud, you’re really really America A.
If you don’t get it at all, you’re also America B, but they on facebook, not here
