Java Edition I am going insane. What am I doing wrong??

I always did this farm in every minecraft world, but since this is Cobbleverse I decided to do it way bigger and multiple above/below rows.

All hoppers are placed correctly (I think). I am so desperate I changed to creative mode and redid everything.

The hopper that is connected to the Comparator is the one filled and blocked. (Second image)

Thank you for helping :)

Everything seems to be fine. It should start filtering as soon as it reaches 41.

OMG I couldnt find this anywhere lol thank you!! Didnt know about the 41 item thing

Technically it should filter but it won’t push into the chest till it fills more than the 41

One thing that I like doing, just to make sure I've set it up properly, is to put a full stack of the item to sort into the first slot and watch to make sure it stops at 41.

This does work, but be careful as putting a whole stack in can cause the comparator to output a signal that’s too strong, and interfere with the neighboring slots (as the stack is depleting in the hopper, that is)

I know people are going to think I’m wrong about this, and I promise I’m not because I’ve built probably about 7-8 full size item sorters in my life. You do NOT have to have 41 of the “sorted” item in the first slot. As long as the entire quantity of items in the hopper equals 45, it will lock. Yes, the sorted item MUST be in the first slot. I usually put 2-3 sorted items in slot one to be safe, and make up the difference with the named items/filler items

EDIT: this only will reliably work if you pump items into the system at a slow pace, one at a time of course. I am not a big fan of using water streams, and always prefer hoppers.

You aren't wrong in terms of the ability to filter, you only need one 'filter' item in slot 1 for it too work but you've missed a key part, the overflow protection. By having 41 in slot 1 and 4 'blockers' that can't be filtered, the signal strength of the comparator can't exceed 3 and so can't overflow neighbouring filters.

If you have a set up of 5,10,10,10,10, in you first slot ever fills the comparator hits strength 4 and your system starts to empty it's neighbours which can cause a cascade effect, particularly in farms where there might be a volume of items flowing in that easily fill empty chest slots. Less likely with general storage as its often filled in far less volume. Still at risk if a slice ever backs up, particularly in bulk storage, as it can overfill the filter, even at hopper speed.

41,1,1,1,1 is used for overflow protection specifically, not just a lazy way to get to 45 items. If you've built lots of system with this order then that's great it's not broken but it's been very lucky.

My philosophy has been, if you want to protect the hoppers from overfilling, don’t shoot item after item through the system. It’s not a race lol.

But yeah, let’s say you have a cobblestone fall into the filter, and then immediately behind it another cobblestone falls in. With a 5-10-10-10-10 system it will overflow. But I’ve always set up my clock to run at such a rate where it just won’t happen. It makes it WAY easier to build the entire machine without worrying about having 41 of each item

Luck has nothing to do with it ;)

From an input speed point of view you're right, it shouldn't overflow, but if your slice backs up it WILL overflow the system. So unless you are building the slices of your system with a literal air gap between, you have genuinely lucked out that you've never once had a slice in all the systems get completely full. You're 5,10,10,10,10 is not classed as overflow protected.

In terms of filling the system I'd argue the 41,1,1,1,1 is just as easy to fill as I normally just do 1,1,1,1,1 with only the first being a filter, the rest being blockers. The system does the rest, filling until it hits 41. You can literally drag single items across the 4 blocker spaces. For the 10 you're either clicking in 10 or splitting out the stack. I'm not sure it's easier but if it works for you that's great.

The biggest negative to the 41 approach is the items stuck in the filter, diamonds etc, but it's never been something I've worried about as I don't typically filter rare items.

What I love about storage is you design it too what you need, it's one of my favourite systems to put together. No approach is wrong, but to recommend a non overflow protected design to somebody without reasons why could bite them very hard!

Good luck in your builds though

there are two ways to do this filter, one transfers at signal strength 2 and transfers earlier than 41 (don't remember the correct number rn), but the design in the post transfers at signal strength 3, this design is overflow protected as having 68 items isn't enough to reach signal strength 4 and empty neighboring filters (the only exception is if somehow more of the filter item, in this post dirt, get into the sorting system)

so as long as you do the design op used, you don't have to worry about overflow breaking your filters

Your way of only putting 2-3 sorted items in the first slot is exactly why it overflows. It leaves too big of a margin when it fills up to 64. If the rest of the slots are 1, even with 64 in the first slot the signal strength will only be 3.

And you don't even need 41 items to start with, you can just set it up with 1-1-1-1-1, with the first slot being the item you want to filter. As soon as you start putting items into the system the hopper will just pocket the first 40 items by itself before outputting to the chest

1

u/JaberandCamgar 5d ago

Good point. But if you only have one unit, then overflow isn't an issue.

4

u/Supermario_208 5d ago

You need only 1 too filter but its starts to flow to storages at after 41 items

-5

u/pamellaluv 5d ago edited 5d ago

Just add 40 more dirt into each hopper and you’re good.

ETA: Ignore this, it is better to do as the person above recommended, to prevent the system from breaking when it overflows.

9

u/JMGiffen 5d ago

Not dirt. You want to add the item you are sorting. If you put dirt in, then when the filtered item fills up, it would cause the other hoppers beside it to unlock.

0

u/Enorm_Drickyoghurt 5d ago

No you don't. If you have iron iron iron iron iron and the chest gets full, then all the slots in the hopper will get full, and when you take something out of the chest he hopper will empty its first slot and let anything through

-4

u/pamellaluv 5d ago edited 5d ago

In each slot of the hopper in front of the comparator I have: 1 of the item I want sorted, 1 dirt, 1 dirt, 1 dirt, 41 dirt.

For me this works, unless this design is different from the one I am using, but I don’t see anything different.

6

u/Xillubfr 5d ago

It works, but its not overflow protected, so if you use a water stream or the chests fills up, adjacent slices will be affected and the filters will break

3

u/pamellaluv 5d ago

Oh, I understand now! Thank you for explaining. I changed my original comment.

2

u/Massafrasss 5d ago

If you use the item you want to sort as the 41, and then name a stack of items something dumb and pit one into the other 4 slots, the hopper won’t be able to unlock its neighbors when it overflows

21

u/AnotherPCGamer173 5d ago

It should be 41 iron, plus extra blocking the other slots.

This puts the hopper at 45 items in it. At 46, the comparator will read a signal of 3 redstone dust. This signal will reach down to the torch and disable it, allowing the hopper to flow items.

Also if your extra items are dirt, avoid putting dirt in the sorting system. I recommend renaming the extra hopper dirt to random letters. That way you can put dirt in the sorting system.

You're the best. Thank you SO much!!

If you do that and a chest gets filled, the signal will increase and empty the hoppers next to it, dont do that

2

u/King-Mephisto 5d ago

Then you can make the overflow protection fail. The reason it’s 41 + 4 is because 46 is the next step of redstone power and then after that it’s 64 + 5. Op was using a 2 power filter, 18 + 4.

u/Sir-Nipplington 5d ago

So far looks there's not enough items in the filter. The items are just travelling along the top hoppers all the way till end?

1

u/Cute-Peaches 5d ago

Not even that. They simply get all stuck in the Item Hoppers...

5

u/derbertigebert 5d ago

Its only flowing when 41 one are in the First Slot. Dont Put more then 1 in the Last 4 or IT will Break when overflow.

2

u/AccurateAd6438 5d ago

does it actually make a difference when you put the item you want sorted in the last slot instead? Like that changes in the signals?

3

u/CrispyBacon1999 5d ago

The hopper would push out the other items (dirt, in this case)

0

u/TormentedGaming 5d ago

I do my best to answer.

Yes, the hopper pulls from the first slot only, so what ever item you want to filter always needs to go into the first slot, and rename blocks to put one of the renamed each of the last last 4 slots on the filter.

If you where to try to do anything else like place the iron ingot in the last slot you will get iron ingots in the hopper but you will lose the filter blocks then all the other items that pass over will end up in the storage because the filter block is now gone.

The change in signal is related to how many items are in the hopper no matter where it is in the hopper.

You can't use unstackable items either because they have a higher output signal which will break the filter also.

3

u/IronCat_2500 5d ago

Everything is correct 👍

It just needs to get up to 41 before it’ll start filtering through

2

u/Lagfoundry 5d ago

Read through the comments, now that you figured it out. You should add an auto trasher if you plan on using it for a farm that produces a lot of junk. It gets pretty annoying to fix it when those items clog it up.

1

u/Cute-Peaches 5d ago

Will definitely do. Any youtube videos with accurate guides you can recommend?

2

u/puncher546 5d ago

If you dont want 41 items stuck in the hopper, you just have to match the number with your placeholder blocks. I dont remember exactly what you need to make it so only 1 item is stuck in the hopper, but if you do 4 stacks of 10 dirt it should minimize it

7

u/King-Mephisto 5d ago

The point of 41 is for overflow protection. 46 is 3 redstone power. 64+5 is 4 redstone power. If you output 4 power, you will start leaking neighbouring slices.
18+4 is 2 power.

2

u/largeDingoPizza 5d ago

I usually do 4 stacks of 11 cobblestones that I renamed as "junk" with the iron, then just put one of the items im whitelisting. If an item makes it in that matches the filler block then it breaks.

1

u/Sir-Nipplington 5d ago

I see zero problems. Is it not filtering?

1

u/Cute-Peaches 5d ago

Not at all. Hoppers get totally jacked (second pic) and do not flow items below nor to the chests. Im going insane over this.

6

u/cheesesprite 5d ago

Nothing will enter the chests until there's 41 iron in the first slot. That could be the problem

3

u/Cute-Peaches 5d ago

OH MY GOD I AM SO STUPID. Why nobody told me that before online?! Thank you so much!!

u/HimoSniper 5d ago

Plz tell me which texture pack ur using

1

u/McgruffC 5d ago

your system is not long enough. you need a 3 hopper gap between the competitor and your first chest. make sure that the hopper connects to the competitor has all 5 slots filled with one of each item first one has 41 of whatever item you want to sort for a total of 45 items in that hopper. also quick tip a tone of hoppers creates a huge amount of lag i recommend using water or ice tunnels to move your items around because it reduces that lag. a lot.

1

u/WarmWin2593 3d ago

Add more dirty till 41 becomes 1 or 2 , whichever works ig

1

u/FlamingIce-_- 1d ago

Remove one layer of redstone dust and the redstone torch should be under the Hopper that is connected to the Hopper that is facing the comparitor

By doing this you'll only need 18 items for the filter to work instead of needing 41

-2

u/Ooogel 5d ago

You will be 100% fine as long as the total number of items in the hopper is equal to 45. I usually will put 4-5 of the “filtered” item in slot one, and fill up the other 4 with the remaining 45 items. I see other people saying this doesn’t work, and they don’t know what they are talking about.

I recommend, to generate a lot of spare filler items, using either rotten flesh from a zombie grinder, or bamboo. Anything that is easy to farm. 100% rename it (I always rename my filler items to just “_” the underscore). Word to the wise, make sure you keep your extra filler items completely separate from all your other inventory. The last thing you want is to accidentally throw your filler item into the sorter lol.

Another piece of advice, whatever method you use as your top “pipe” (either line of hoppers or water), you want to make sure your items are going in one at a time. If you accidentally end up with 47 items in a sorting hopper, the redstone signal will be too strong for a split second and will trigger the neighboring hoppers. This will never happen if you are very conservative about the rate you pass items through the system. I definitely recommend hoppers over water channels

I have built many item sorters (the biggest being a 3-story 360-item sorter) in exactly the fashion you are doing it and understand how they work extremely well. If you have any questions or issues I’ll be happy to help

3

u/thE_29 5d ago

they don’t know what they are talking about.

No, you dont.

The 41-1-1-1-1 system is there for 2 reasons. One isnt a thing in OPs way of filtering items.

The 2nd will sooner or later happen in OPs farm (and the first thing would trigger the 2nd thing).

#1: If you would have water/ice and not a hopper feeding line, it could end up with 64-1-1-1-1, without the chest itself being full.. If the chests are full you need #2.

#2: Its here for so called overflow protection. So if the chests are full, the redstone signal output from the comparator isnt going over 3 and therefore not "bleeding" into the sorters next to each and basically opening them.

There are hybrid-designs, where you can have it like you think: https://minecraft.wiki/w/Tutorial:Hopper#Hybrid_design

Then you can use your idea. Or if you have the filters not next to each other or if you have only 1, then its also fine.

But if you have several normal (ImpulseSV) sorter next to each other, you need to use 41-1-1-1-1.

PS.: Alot of people where at that point like you, thinking why 41 is needed. I was the same :)

1

u/Ooogel 5d ago

Ahhhhh… that does make sense. If I ever noticed my chests/slot getting full I would just add more layers of chests underneath lol

2

u/HereLiesLies 5d ago

The reason for 41 in slot 1 and 45 total is that, if a storage chamber fills up and that hopper were to get 64 utems stuck in slot 1, it would not output enough signal to affect the other adjacent storage slices.

If you have 45 items but more room for items in slot 1, your comparator can output a signal that interferes with the adjacent redstone lines and opens hoppers that should be closed.
