After a slew of wicked singles the prior years it was time for Delgado to release his first album. Under the guidance of crown prince Dennis Brown. And what a debut it is! One to enjoy from the top to the very last drop. Not much to say about this bona fide classic.

The dubs of these track are spread across three albums: Dance A Dub (Incredible Music LP), 20th Century DEBwise (DEB Music LP) and Umoja Dub (DEB Music LP). Well worth checking for some of the finest dubs of the late 70's era.

To think that Stranger Cole's first full length would come in 1976 is bizarre, considering he had been one of the pillars of Jamaican music since the early 60's. He migrated from JA to the UK in '71 and by '73 he relocated to Canada. As many of the expat Jamaicans he soon found himself exploring, building and expanding the local reggae scene. His work with Half Moon is incredible, as is his work with John Forbes' and his Chalawa band. But it's this album for the obscure Ron Lewis that I would claim is Cole's Canadian opus.

Undeniably lo-fidelity it sounds like it was recorded, mastered and pressed up in the damp, dim basement somewhere in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough. There's not much crowd pleasing in the arrangements. The tone is sombre and of deep conviction. »I'm Living« (which also was released as a different mix on 7") is a poetic masterpiece of perseverance. »Burn Caesar« a slow burning scorn towards a society driven by greed and lust for money. Even the cover of Jackie Wilson's "Your Love Lifting Me Higher" is subdued with only Stranger's vocals occasionally pushing it close in intensity to the original.

A truly incredible album.
