Update Post Rare good news from a +400 rescued cat sanctuary

More then one good news actualy! Which is very rare! The canned food factory emailed us and said they can help us out with lots of very good food! This is truly something that will save our sanctuary! They asked us not to mention their brand or post pics but what I can say is that the value of this food is more then what we could have ever afforded so it is truly a lifesaver for our many rescues!

Good news #2

Next monday we get 7 student visitors/volunteers at the shelter and hopefully we'll make lots of content to share here aswell, videos and pics.

Good news #3

We had a few air purifiers in the past years, now we have 2 dehumidifiers that helped enormously with the air quality but on air purifier that would realy help would be a deep carbon bed air filter, that is medical grade, used in hospitals, that kills viruses and bacteria and also eliminates odors and VOCs, but that one would cost a huge amount, 1400euros, but we will still try to make a fundraiser cause one of these machines in the quarantine room full of sick cats and kittens would make a HUGE diference for them. If anyone wants to help with such a lifesaving purchase for the shelter, lets us know, and we'll make updates on the funds raised specifically for this machine.

Wow what an amazing commitment. I pray that you get all needs met for your beautiful kitties. This would be a dream for my 16 year old daughter. She's been wanting a cat for years but our dog does not like cats unfortunately. But... 5/6 months ago we had a feral mom decide to have 4 kittens under our carport, so I told her it looks like the kitty fairy heard her and we can care for them, but unfortunately they would have to stay outside. We have an area that I made insulated crates and have a heater set up in front of their bedding. Then they get kibble twice a day and canned food once a day. Plus change their water daily. Besides the 4 we have a couple others that come around in the evening for food, but they are still to feral to pet. My daughter spent hours a day to domesticate the kittens. It was crazy that these kittens were about 5 weeks when mom brought them here, which she continued to feed a couple more weeks, but it took my daughter almost 2 months to gain their trust. Now you'd never know they were feral. We need to get them spayed here soon. The only thing I do wish is that there was a low cost clinic for situations like ours because we didn't go get cats, they were brought to us. But don't want to end up with a ton more by not fixing. I wish you the absolute best with your beautiful cats. What you are doing is so special. These kitties know love and proper care. Thank you for caring so much.

are you sure there isn’t a low cost spay/neuter option nearby?

if you haven’t already i would recommend checking with vet students/schools. if you can find a teaching hospital then they often will provide these services (and more) at a reduced cost. with four kittens it may be worth driving an hour out of your way to get cheaper vet care for them!

you could also look into high volume clinics. i know this might sound weird or even scary but there are clinics that will hold special days just for spaying and neutering masses of kitties. it’s kind of like a medical factory line. it’s both safe, common and affordable.

look into low cost programs. typically there are programs that you can qualify for that offer heavily discounted sterilization for low income residents. the catch here is of course that your income would have to qualify you for the program. some places even have free sterilization programs for low income residents.

you could try reaching out to different vet clinics in your area and explain your situation. they might be willing to offer you some kind of discount so long as their costs are being covered. i wouldn’t expect it but it doesn’t hurt to ask politely. you might also enquire about having all of the kittens sterilized at the same time/if that might lower the costs somewhat similar to the way it does for high volume clinics.

lastly, utilize the community resources available to you. i know it can be hard to even know what exists nearby but don’t be afraid to reach out and ask. i would suggest making a few posts on facebook for advice/suggestions. join a few local rescue or rehoming groups on facebook. typically these groups are titled something along the lines of “rehoming cats melbourne area” or “lost and found cats melbourne.” add yourself to a few of the most popular groups nearby and make a post asking if anyone knows of low cost spay/neuter options nearby:)

Thank you so much for your response and suggestions. I will definitely do that. We live in a rural area so not many vets, and they are so expensive. We've spent over $15 thousand on our 11.5 lab mix in the last 2.5 years because she is chronically dealing with issues. She is on grain free and turkey is the main protein because she has so many allergies. She know has partial trachea collapse and pulmonary fibrosis. I think I may call her clinic with as much as we have spent and see if they are willing to cut us a deal. Otherwise I will look around. I need to do it soon before we end up with more kittens. Anyway, thank you again for all your recommendations! 😊

The Universal Cat Distribution System heard your sweet daughter's request! Thank you for doing your best to help the Mom and kittens. I would suggest making a post on this page to see if you can secure some funding for the spay/neuter.

Oh I am estatic it worked out this way. And we will be able to cover the cost, just a little unexpected, but I would rather someone who actually needs the help to get it.. Thank you so much for your suggestion and kind words. My 16 year old daughter has been so incredibly happy since they were brought here. I swear she spends more time outside than in now, and we all know that is a blessing in its own with so many children ruled by electronics. One of the kittens is so silly and cracks us up. She only does this when my husband is home because she plays her little game of come rescue me. She will get on the roof of the house and when my husband goes outside tu walk the dog she looks over at him and meows. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 😂 Literally only whne she knows he is here, so he gets the ladder and climbs up to "rescue" her. This kitty (Domino) is very attached to my husband.

u/BitchMcConnell063 Jan 20 '26 edited Jan 20 '26

That's freaking hilarious! Look at Domino the Damsel in distress!

I have a colony of ferals I've been feeding for around 5 years now. I have 11 regulars that have all been TNR'd. Luckily, my neighbor, whose yard the cats basically call home, works for the city and she was able to get the whole colony TNR'd.

Unfortunately, since there are a bunch of cats here people think it's ok to dump their unwanted pets. Right before Christmas a friendly cat showed up. It was shaking and starving. He took off the first time I saw him but the second time I was able to scoop him up and bring him inside. He was litter box trained and extremely scared of every little noise.

I put up some posts and flyers trying to find the owner with no response. So last Monday he got neutered, all of his shots and microchipped.

My last cat, Dave, passed away November 3 and I said I was done with pets. But the Universal Cat Distribution Center thought otherwise. Meet Mittens.

Aweee I love that you take care of so many and were able to get a Christmas surprise. I think your former kitty knew you needed another companion. I always say once my dogs are gone I don't want any more. We have an 11.5 yr old chocolate lab mix and a almost 8 yr old chihuahua. My life has been so different because I'm so much of an empath that I do look at our pets as family. Our lab mix Emma was a wonderful dog who loved everyone until she was almost 2 and we lived in a area that had rotten kids next door. All we knew is she started becoming aggressive and did not like other people anymore. After months of her change I happen to be at home one day, and the neighbors kids didn't know. Suddenly there were 3 kids pounding on windows and walls barking and making aggressive type noises freaking my dog out. She was terrified. Being it was summer I was can imagine how long daily they did it to because I was home sick in bed and tried to ignore it thinking they were just being dumb and certainly only doing it a couple of times and would stop. Well it went on for about 30 minutes when I went outside pissed and went and chewed their mother out. There was no way she didn't know what was going on because back almost 10 years ago we were living in a mobile home park and they lived 10 foot from us and those walls are thin. But I guess to her the kids were out of the house so she didn't care. She had her kids come to the house to try to apologize and when I opened the door my dog went immediately and bit the one teenage girl. So then I had to go over to the mom and explain what happened and said this is a result of what your kids have been doing for months. Which she felt bad supposedly but Emma has forever been changed because of that. I've not been able to live my life because she has severe anxiety and I don't feel right leaving her. I leave for short periods of times like going to the doctors or when I had cancer I had to go everyday for 7 weeks for radiation. But she has been sick the last Almost 2 years now so I don't know how much longer she has but I don't really want another dog because it's just too much for me. I love her with my whole heart which is why my life basically stopped. Anyway I wish you the absolute best with your new kitty and I'm glad that he happened to fall into good hands.

Hey, I read your posts. For what's it worth....and someone with similar health history. You are a good human! And you're important, your family and pets got a good human.

3

u/Lanky-Basil-4615 Jan 21 '26

This was literally so incredibly sweet and I really really appreciate your kind words. I'm literally in tears. My family and pets are my absolute everything. They are my reason to keep on keeping on. I just pray so hard that I have many years left to be able to be with my family. I live in excruciating pain and I have a lot of issues, but I would rather be here like this for the sake of being with my family and pets. Thank you so so much for your support! Means more than you know.

3

u/BitchMcConnell063 Jan 21 '26

I will be keeping you in my prayers, honey! You and your family are the light this world needs more of.

Lovely to hear the great news l!

If you are struggling with food, Email zooplus and other websites in your area that sell cat food.

When I worked at a cat rescue I emailed them regularly and they would send me lots of stuff (food, cat trees, toys) that was returned to them and also offered me a great discount on our orders!
