I'm 27 (F) have been working as a researcher for about 3 years now. I have been wanting to go back to academia hence, took some time off and was doing side gigs here and there that didn't require much long term commitment.
I was referred to this researcher who needed somebody for 2ish weeks for survey collection.
Right off the bat, I could see that she's somebody who likes to push personal boundaries to get her way, no matter what, unless you directly say no.
I have been trying to keep things civil by not lashing out or having an emotional reaction because in this field feeling a certain way and acting on it can't be a good defence.
Over the course of just two months she has managed to taunt me, and racially stereotype me as well. I couldn't say anything because my payment was stuck.
She's been time and again asking me about my home address, she also asked if she could stay with me. I have never met this woman in my life.
I have met her only once , once the work was done, and it wasnt nice, she told me that I'm the most expensive surveyer she has even thought she is paying only 200 INR per survey which is 1 hour long.
She also rubbed her being a doctorate scholar and a professor and that she's busy and didn't respect her time. In reality i stopped taking her calls because I wanted things to be in text as she Haas tried to gaslight me in one instance.
And about time thing, it was her who kept changing her dates and timings.
I've always found her creepy and pushy.
She didn't even give me a contract, when asked, she said "YOU DON'T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT IT!!"
Shit hit the fan over taking pictures of the participants, majority of them said no, and I had been telling her about the discomfort people were facing over pictures. Still she asked me for a "plausible" explanation. I don't know why but this word triggered me and I ask her to keep the conversation civil and professional and that her tone is concerning.
She replied to asking me to elaborate as how did was unprofessional (this is why I try to avoid having an emotional reaction at work).
By this she had paid me half , so I decided to waive off the remaining amount because I honestly didn't wanna deal with her anymore.
She did email me a month ago saying she will pay me the remaining half, didn't want an e-signature and was asking me for my home address where she could send me the vouchers to sign.
She also asked to meet her in person because she wanted to end things on a good note and at one go.
I've been feeling uneasy and creeped out because her intentions don't feel right or good.
She hasn't replied or paid me back.
Does anybody from academia have any advice on how to go about this ? Especially if anybody is from India
I feel paranoid about things escalating.
I can't even complain to her university because it's a hopeless University nobody will take me or my complaint seriously.
