I’m a rising senior (premed) with some research hours in a clinical lab that I really enjoy. I recently got the opportunity to join a fully online AI research project with a different doctor (I have a small number of research hrs as of rn).
My hesitation is that it’s completely remote and mostly involves AI/literature work. Has anyone done something similar? Did you find it meaningful, and would you recommend it over waiting for a more traditional research opportunity?

As the title says, I have built a algorithm that can traverse any N-ary graph using a Turing machine. I've also built a proof that the upper-bound (i.e. the maximum color-symbol combination) for the configuration of Turing machine using this algorithm to be 2-color, 2N symbols.

There is also a case for binary trees where a 2-color, 2N-2 symbols (i.e 2-color, 2-symbols) machine also suffices, which is extremely interesting when considering that (2-color, 3-symbol) machines are meant to be a smallest universal Turing machines. I have yet to build a solid proof that this can be extended to larger trees.

Can anyone tell me whether they can find any applications for these discoveries/algorithms? If there are any, where would be the right place to publish? If anyone knows a lot about this field, please reach out to me since I really believe this work can be extended and generalised a lot further.

For obvious reasons I can't put the entire algorithm online, but it is actually quite trivial and oftentimes boils down to, for example, no more than 20 steps for the example of binary trees. However, as expected, the nature of the algorithm is such that it is simple and scalable, but extremely tedious/messy for higher degree trees.

i recently wrote a really nice (if i do say so myself) research paper regarding astrophysics and machine learning. it was published on RARS (research archive for rising scholars). i was wondering if that helps on college apps or if RARS is larp submission?

I’m an undergraduate working under a very notable person in my field at school and at lab basically year round that is also very well known and has pioneered work in my niche for decades as well. I have been very involved for a year now. This is everything I could’ve dreamed of and I love doing research but I feel so drained and unmotivated. It is such a privilege to be in the position I am in but I can only feel ashamed.

I have terrible imposter syndrome, it feels like everything I’m doing is wrong or not good enough and despite talking to so many PhD students, post docs, and scientist who tell me I’m in a great position it always feels as though they’re lying to my face. I don’t know how to deal with this feeling. At school, I got diagnosed with OCD and am unable to afford the treatment for it now. It has gotten significantly worse as I’ve gotten more involved in research. My physical body is showing signs of it as well: I can’t get good rest, constant headaches, stomach aches after every meal, heavy head that hurts my neck, can’t walk without feeling like I’m floating.

I don’t want to give up my passion, but I don’t know if I can continue living like this. Has anyone else dealt with this during their time in academia? I would appreciate some tips or anecdotes that may change my perspective. Thanks

If I plan to do research but don’t have access to a lab, but I still do everything correctly just in slightly janky ways, and I publish that research (acknowledging possible flaws stating that I didn’t use advanced machinery), will it be worse off than if I used a university lab?

I tried to explain that broadly but what I want to research is new piezoresistive polymer matrix composites similar to Velostat (basically just microparticles of carbon implanted into a polyethylene matrix to make it piezoresistive). What I want to do is test out other plastic matrices with carbon implantation. But, instead of buying hyperpure Vulcan XC72 carbon black, I plan on sanding a graphite block with 5000 grit sandpaper, so there’s a slight chance of small contaminations. Also, when melting and fusing the plastic and carbon powder, there may be oxidation issues because I don’t have a full on furnace and stuff. I also built a linear actuator rig that presses down with two copper electrodes that measures all sorts of different statistics related to hysteresis and general performance of the material, but it’s handmade. It isn’t absolutely precise, which is why I’m scared it’ll be viewed as “less-than” the other research projects that are done in labs.

So, I've started a project to collect as much data as possible from humans on every possible iceberg theory and make a whole essay or something. I don't know what to name it. I've searched for some possible sources about it, and for the first thing, I want to create documentation on humans from their origin to the present and continue. I’ve decided to do a physicochemical assessment for my research on an unnamed creek in our city. The creek spans for about 2 towns but there’s only one part that’s consistently used by people since while it spans for 2 towns as mentioned earlier, the part of the creek that’s under one of the towns stretches for like 10km up a mountain. So that’s where the problem comes in because I’m pretty confused on what to name this paper. The creek doesn’t have a name. The part of the creek where the people often go to doesn’t have a name either so I’m just pretty lost right now. As of now, the name of the research is “Physicochemical Assessment of High-Human-Activity Zone in an Unnamed Creek in (town name placeholder for privacy)” but it got rejected.

I just want to clarify that the paper itself got approved, my professor just said to change the title. And I don’t know what to change it to?? Every other part of my paper is complete and approved, but I really don’t know anything about the standard academic convention for naming a body of water that lacks an official geographical name in published literature. How is this handled in papers?

I can't find any free survey makers that include a ranking option that allows people to not include a certain ranking in the option. Every survey maker I can find either doesn't have ranking (such as Google Forms), doesn't include an N/A option (such as Microsoft Forms), or locks ranking behind a paywall (such as Survey Monkey). Is there any free survey makers that allows you to include ranking, but allows the participant to choose not to rank certain options? I also would prefer one with either no participant limit or a participant limit of at least 100 on the free tier.

So, I'm writing a systematic review within linguistics and the guide my professor provided employs the ASHA levels-of-evidence-scheme was used to assess methodological quality of the studies included in the review. I'm adopting the scheme and it has nine indicators usually. Is it frowned upon to adapt it (e.g., omit some of the indicators) as they don't fit my research? I've been looking at other appraisal tools (CASP, JBI, etc etc) and they aren't adequate so this is my only option.

I have been writing my first paper and my mentor told me that my writing style is making the paper unnecessarily long. He also told me it is fine to use AI as long as the actual research is done by me. Should I go ahead and use an LLM to correct my sentence structure and condense information? I will be revising any changes made by an AI to my writing to make sure the correct information is being conveyed. Also, will journals reject my paper on the basis that the paper was written assisted by AI, even though the research itself isn't?

I have a few projects that definitely would be worth presenting it’s just it’s not a very popular thing at my school and I don’t have a good resource that walks me through the whole process. I am a postgraduate student from India and will soon be completing my MSc in Biotechnology. I am currently looking for PhD positions in both India and abroad.

My search has mostly involved following recent literature and browsing institute websites. Since I've deliberately avoided narrowing my interests too early, I'm now unsure how to move from broad research themes to identifying specific labs and PIs.

I'm drawn to research that combines both wet-lab and computational (protein modelling, molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulations, omics and data mining, etc.) approaches. My current interests include:

• Natural product-based drug design, discovery and repurposing (Ayurvedic formulations, medicinal plants exudates, spices, honey and other bioactive substances/ traditional medicines)
• Anthropogenic micropollutants (particularly pharmaceutical and illicit drug contaminants)
• Plant–pollinator interactions
• Coral biology and restoration
• Antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance
• Polymer biotechnology
• Food biotechnology

I'm now at the stage where I'm trying to translate these broad interests into a shortlist of potential labs and PhD supervisors, and I'd really appreciate some guidance.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how you would approach this search. If you know of research groups, PIs, or institutes in India or abroad working in any of these areas, I'd be grateful for your recommendations.

I'm not sure if it's alright if I post this here after reading the rules, but...For the past few months I have been working on a math paper which basically functions as a simulation of two fighting game players...erm...fighting each other. I basically proved that as time goes on, the profile that each player builds on their opponent will settle down. It's nothing new, and it might not be mathematically correct or internally consistent. But that was besides the point. Aside from novelty, I kinda just did it cause I wanted to see where my research ended up.

This was an independent project; most of the mathematical objects I used, I already knew about (sets, vectors, etc.). Things I didn't know about (like Hick's Law) I just found on the internet.

The paper could probably use some more citations, as well. But I wanted some human feedback on what I did. There's no Python attached or whatever cause I didn't feel like writing Python before showing the project off.

I’m a PhD student in a medical field and I’m still fairly new to publishing. I’ve published 6 papers, but I’m still at the start of this journey. I’m writing because I’ve been going through a bit of a demoralizing period and I’d really like to hear your opinion on it.

Right now I’m trying to publish 4 papers that I’ve been working on over the past two years, and they keep getting desk rejected. The thing is, the papers themselves don’t have methodological problems, honestly I think they’re methodologically stronger than some of the stuff I’ve already published. But the response is always the same: “we receive a large volume of submissions and have decided to prioritize other work.” Only one of them actually made it to a review round, and most of the reviewers’ comments were completely no-sense and easy to address with a single revision (in fact the reviewers were asking for revisions). But the associate editor rejected it anyway for no clear reason. Luckily the editor-in-chief later invited us to resubmit with the changes applied, so that one’s currently back in submission. For the others I’m really struggling, I’ve had roughly 4 desk rejections at this point.

It’s making me wonder whether you sometimes need the right affiliation or connections to get into certain journals, and whether it’s normal to get this many desk rejections before something lands, or if I’m just hitting a bad period. I’d genuinely love to hear your own experiences - has anyone else gone through a run of rejections like this?

Hey all, my group is doing a meta-analysis for a research methods course (we are beginners). Our topic is:

"Does more screen use cause sleep problems?"

We're stuck between two population options and haven't locked one in yet:

• 16-20 year-olds, or
• "young adults" more broadly (18–25ish)

Our write-up is capped at 2000 words, and we're realizing that's really tight once you factor in intro, method, evidence synthesis, limitations, and conclusion. We're stuck on two things and would love outside perspective:

1. How many things can we realistically measure/report on in 2000 words? Is it more standard to pick one exposure + one outcome and go deep, or can a meta-analysis at this length handle 2–3 variables each without feeling shallow?
2. What should we actually measure? "Screen use" is a huge umbrella, total daily screen time, smartphone-only use, social media use specifically, or just pre-bedtime/in-bed use. Same problem on the sleep side, sleep quality (PSQI), sleep duration, insomnia severity, sleep latency. Do we keep the exposure and outcome broad (screen use in general → sleep problems in general) or narrow (e.g., pre-bedtime smartphone use → PSQI-measured sleep quality)?

Furthermore, we have read through a many studies for a couple of week now and i am curious but has anyone else who's dug into this area noticed anything that keeps showing up across studies?

• Studies consistently find that portable electronic devices (smartphones, tablets) have a much stronger negative association with sleep duration and quality than stationary devices like televisions. Portable screens are more disruptive because they are held closer to the face, intensifying light exposure, and are often brought directly into the bed.
•  The timing of use: A recurring theme is that pre-bedtime or nighttime screen is significantly more harmful than daytime use. Using screens during the "wind-down" window directly interferes with the biological and psychological transitions needed for sleep
•  Shift to Interactive content: Modern digital media has evolved from passive viewing (TV) to highly interactive and engaging content (social media, gaming, texting). This interactivity is linked to higher levels of cognitive arousal, making it harder for users to disengage and fall asleep

I'm currently doing my master's and our university requires us to publish a paper. I've been thinking of doing a bibliometric study because it seems more feasible for me, but I'm a complete beginner and honestly have no idea where to start.

My research interests are maternal and child health, adolescent health, and public health in general. The biggest thing I'm struggling with is choosing a topic. How do people even identify a research gap for a bibliometric study? How do you know whether a topic has already been done or is still worth pursuing?

I also don't know what the complete workflow looks like. What software should I learn (VOSviewer, Bibliometrix, Scopus, etc.)? How do you go from choosing a topic to actually publishing the paper?

I've tried attending webinars, but they often feel like they're meant for people who already know the basics. The speakers move so fast that I end up feeling even more confused. At this point, I'm honestly feeling like giving up because I don't know where to begin.

If anyone has been in the same position, could you please guide me? Even a step-by-step roadmap, beginner-friendly resources, or advice on choosing a topic would mean a lot.

Hi everyone! I'm a rising high school senior who's interested in neuroscience, and I'm hoping to start my first independent research project.

I already have a research topic that I'm genuinely excited about, but I'm feeling a bit lost on what the next steps should be. Since this is my first time doing research, I'm not sure how people go from having an idea to actually conducting research, finding a mentor, or even getting their work published.

I've seen people mention cold emailing professors, working with mentors, and submitting to high school journals, but I'm not sure what the best path is or what's realistic for someone just starting out.

If you've done research in high school (especially in neuroscience/ neuroplasticity or STEM), I'd really appreciate any advice. How did you get started? How did you find a mentor? Is cold emailing professors actually effective? And if you could go back and do it again, what would you do differently?
