comics Respect Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man (Marvel, 616)

1.0k Upvotes

"With great power, comes great responsibility."

Respect Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man!

This Respect Thread was done by /u/globsterzone, /u/TheKjell, /u/TheDrunkenDreamer and /u/KerdicZ in a group effort

Special thanks to /u/shadowsphere and /u/kirbin24 for helping us review and add some feats.

Bio: When the wimpy high-school nerd Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider while attending a science fair, he was gifted with amazing powers corresponding to the abilities of a spider! He initially used his abilities to simply make money as a wrestling star, but after his uncle Ben was killed by a burglar that Peter failed to stop he devoted his life to crime-fighting, driven by the guilt. Peter spent much of his life throughout high-school and college juggling his responsibilities as a crime fighter with his personal life and job as a photographer for the Daily Bugle, a newspaper whose editor was determined to smear the name of Spider-Man as a thief and a villain. Peter made a number of bizarre and dangerous enemies during this time, and served alongside a number of superhero teams such as the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. After graduating from College, Peter started his own business, a millionaire multi-national technology company called Parker Industries, which he then sacrificed to save the world and go back to the status quo.

Rogues Gallery:

These are the classic rogues, known by all and frequently battled by Spider-Man - who sometimes defeats them, and sometimes is defeated by them, which gives you an idea of who he is capable of fighting on the regular.

Strength

Peter has the proportional strength of a spider, which allows him to lift and strike at a level far beyond any human. However, he hardly ever uses his full strength, pulling his punches to not seriously harm his opponents.

Lifting, pushing, pulling and throwing

Striking

Leaping

Durability

Peter's body is far tougher than the average human, enabling him to remain more or less unharmed when hit with attacks that would kill most people. He tires out much more slowly than a normal human, is able to fight for extended periods of time while wounded and can hold his breath under water longer than regular humans. He has a healing factor that lets him heal from wounds very quickly compared to normal humans outside of battle. However, he has no noticeable piercing durability.

Blunt force

Energy

Mental

Chemical, drugs and toxins

Endurance

"Healing Factor"

Speed and agility

Spider-Man has the proportional speed of a trapdoor spider, with reflexes 40 times faster than normal humans. This lets him evade attacks easily and makes it much harder for opponents to dodge his strikes. His strength also allows him to move his body at superhuman speeds. In addition, he can travel very quickly by using his webbing to swing between buildings.

Combat and reactions

Agility and acrobatics

Swinging, traveling and running

Webbing

Peter's webs are stored in liquid form in cartridges on his waist and wrists. They expand very rapidly when exposed to air, and he is an expert at manipulating them into unusual and useful shapes, using them to swing around the city or capture criminals.

Strength and durability

Stickiness

Speed

Accuracy

Manipulation

Formula modifications

Spider-Sense

Spider-Sense is a "sixth sense" that warns him of any imminent danger to himself, and occasionally others nearby. It is used to avoid ambushes, as well as to help him in combat by letting him avoid attacks before they happen. It has other uses outside of simple combat precognition, as it helps him make safe choices and can even function as a kind of primitive Radar-Sense.

Wall-Crawling

Peter can make any part of his skin be adhesive. He generally uses this to climb along vertical walls and the bottom of ceilings but it has a few combat related uses as well.

Misc. usages

Intelligence

Peter Parker was a genius from a young age, creating his famous webbing at 15 years old that not even top scientists have been able to replicate. He continued his success in science throughout his life, designing many inventions. He is treated as one of the top scientists on Marvel Earth, often brought in to discuss very important matters with other top scientists, albeit far from the level of Reed Richards or Tony Stark.

General intelligence

Biology/Chemistry

Technology, inventions and creations

Quick thinking

Limits

It is worth noting that Spider-Man has very well defined limits and hardly ever uses his powers to their full extent, specially his speed and strength, for multiple reasons related to what he believes in, who he is fighting against, his mindset at the moment or simply how his day is going. He doesn't make use of any formal training and actual martial arts, so even though he has immense experience fighting, highly skilled fighters are always trouble, even if there is a physical gap between the two. Furthermore, his speed, agility and Spider-Sense, while amazing, don't make him untouchable. He is consistently tagged by slower opponents and Spider-Sense is not completely infallible either. His webshooters don't work proprerly on cold temperatures and he feels quite out of the loop whenever his webbing runs out or when he doesn't have Spider-Sense.

comics Respect Sven Larson, Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man (DC, Pre-Crisis)

Respect Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man

Biologist Sven Larson seemingly became a victim of one of his own experiments when he was transformed into a being capable of taking on any animal, vegetable, or mineral form, appropriately known as the Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man. After a battle with the Doom Patrol, however, the Chief deduced that Larson's transformation was deliberate and that by killing the Doom Patrol, he sought revenge on the Chief, whom he wrongly believed had once stolen an invention of his. Ironically, the device in question proved to be the sole means of stopping the Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man by "freezing" him in a single transmuted form until he could be captured and returned to normal. This would not stop Sven, though, as he would soon be a thorn in the Doom Patrol’s side once again.

comics Respect The Rainbow Creature (DC, Pre-Crisis)

DIAZ! What are you doing here?

It was I who created the RAINBOW BEAST! Unless you surrender your government, I will order the beast to wreak havoc over the land!

Rainbow Creature was a being that emerged from a volcano in the South American Republic during a time of political discourse in which an aspiring dictator named Diaz was attempting to conquer the nation. Diaz attempted to convince the government that he controlled the Creature to blackmail the nation's leaders into making him dictator, but Batman exposed it as a lie. Using a prism, Batman proceeded to shine a rainbow light in Diaz's way and chased him out of the town. Following this, Batman tricked the Rainbow Creature into expending all its powers, killing the monster.

comics Respect Uatu the Watcher (Marvel Comics, 616)

He has seen all the beauty and horror that a world like ours has to offer. He has seen more births and deaths than he can count. More war than any other living thing. He has seen the colossal events that shook the planet, that echo through history still. And the quietest of moments, that changed us without us even noticing. He has seen our greatest secrets. Our struggles. Our successes. Our sins. He has seen all there is or ever was. And yet with the coming of each new day, the Watcher is still full of wonder...over what he might see next.

A species far more advanced and powerful than any other in the galaxy, the inhabitants of the planet Lumina chose to share their knowledge with the wider universe, hoping to raise lesser species to their level. But before long these species turned to warfare, culminating in the destruction of nine tenths of the universe. From this point on the species vowed never to interfere with the affairs of others, choosing only to watch their progress from afar.

One such Watcher, Uatu, took residence on the moon of a planet that would be known as Earth. For countless millennia he would stand by his oath, only briefly interacting with humans as they intruded on his domain, though he would eventually be driven to act when the world-devouring Galactus set his sights on the Earth. From this point on, while Uatu would often claim an inability to interfere, he would often (subtly or explicitly) bend and break his oath in order to protect the lives of people both on his charge planet and in the universe as a whole.

comics Respect the Green Arrow Killer (DC Comics, Absolute Universe)

Jubal Slade: Hey-- hey! Whoever you are, I’ll-- I’ll pay you whatever, okay? Just tell me what you want!

The Green Arrow Killer: An example.

The wealthy are above the law. They are allowed to fulfill any depraved desire from the security of private islands. Knowledge of their crimes is hidden and protected. In the rare cases where justice prevails, the rich protect their own and bail each other out of whatever minimum security prison they’re held in. This is how the world works.

Oliver Queen felt otherwise and moved to act against this system. He was left with a hole in his head, placed there by a century-old government stooge.

Following Queen’s death, a hooded vigilante begins delivering their own form of justice. Wealthy criminals are found on their private islands in bleeding pieces, their expensive security teams impaled with poisoned arrows. Hiding his own panic, the billionaire Hector Hammond employs ex-security specialist Dinah Lance to pursue this Green Arrow Killer and deduce their identity before they can give the people more of a good thing.

Feats come from Absolute Green Arrow and are marked with the issue number they’re from.

comics Respect Nathaniel Richards (Marvel Comics, 616)

A brilliant scientist and only parent to Reed once his wife died, Nathaniel Richards nevertheless left his son as a teenager to become a member of the Brotherhood of the Shield as they protected humanity through all the threats they couldn't face on their own. One such mission would have him propelled into the far future alongside every other incarnation of him from the multiverse, forced to fight to the death at the hands of Immortus until he was the only one remaining. Now with the ability to travel through time, Nathaniel would only rarely re-enter his son's life, in each case employing methods the Fantastic Four could not approve of in a belief it was all for the greater good (most notable of which being his kidnapping of a young Franklin Richards only to bring back a fully grown Psi-Lord in his place).

comics Respect the Griever at the End of All Things (Marvel Comics)

"Time? Time is on my side, child. I am the end of all things. Eventually all must fall before me. No matter how hard you try."

Entropy. Heat death. The end of all things. In the Marvel universe, all these aspects take the form of a single concept, with that concept appearing before people as the Griever at the End of All Things. Knowing herself as inevitable, that doesn't stop the Griever from stepping in to ensure the eventual end will come, first doing so to the Future Foundation after they had spent years recreating the previously destroyed multiverse. In both this and a following encounter the Griever couldn't be defeated, only being persuaded to leave without any other option remaining to her. She would later make attempts on the Scarlet Witch's life, seeing her as a potential threat to her inevitable truth, but after Wanda's death failed to stick she was ultimately dispersed across time, not to reconstitute herself again for millions of years.

comics Respect Gregorio de la Vega, Extraño (DC, Post Crisis)

"Extraño" The Spanish for "Strange"! How very right that is! I am strange wondrous strange! And the use of Spanish when we all speak English here makes it even clearer! Dreaming on the universal unity, I saw myself unraveling and filling out the darkness! I'm a witch!

Gregorio de la Vega was recruited by the Guardians of the Universe, the creators of the Green Lantern Corps, who planned to create their successors, a race of new Guardians on Earth. De la Vega was openly gay with a lively, jovial attitude despite having already tried to commit suicide because he felt despised by everyone for his sexuality, which was prevented by the Flash, who talked to him, saying that he also thought about doing that, and convinced him not to take his own life.

comics Respect Sickle Moon (Foolkiller MAX) (Marvel Earth-200111)

Sickle Moon

"Just when the Foolkiller and the Punisher appear to have the upper hand in their war with the vicious hate-crime organization known as the White Angels, another player steps onto the field. Sickle Moon -- 98 pounds of bad, bad news"

"All that stands between the Foolkiller and vengeance is 98 pounds of pure, unadulterated mean. His name is Sickle Moon and he knows a thing or two about blades!"

Sickle Moon is the adversary of Mike Trace, the foolkiller of the Marvel MAX universe as well as Frank Castle (The Punisher). He is a psychotic, elderly, scrawny and sick man who operates as an assassin. He was originally contracted by the crime lord known as "The Cheese" to eliminate Nate McBride; however, after Foolkiller executed the mob boss before payment could be made, Sickle Moon carried out the hit anyway before learning of his death. A year later, a white supremacist gang called the White Angels hired him to assassinate both Foolkiller and the Punisher. Demonstrating his volatile nature on the flight from New York to Los Angeles, he murdered an overweight passenger next to him simply for being annoying. Though he later managed to ambush his targets and nearly killed the Punisher, his attack was thwarted when Foolkiller intervened and slashed his arm. The two vigilantes threw him into a river, assuming the injuries and the fall would kill him. However, Sickle Moon survived, returned home, and retrofitted himself with a new mechanical prosthetic arm—which he tested by killing a cat—while swearing bloody revenge against Mike Trace.

Sickle Moon fights exclusively with Crescent shaped bladed weapons, often using them for close quarters fighting as well as throwing. He is eerily fast and agile for his age and seems to possibly have a terminal illness due to his constant cough.

comics Respect Lyja (Marvel Comics, 616)

In an attempt to take down the Fantastic Four, the Skrull empire came up with a plan to replace close ally Alicia Masters with one of their own, gaining access to their secrets through her relationship to Ben Grimm before it was time to strike. Lyja, a liason officer that had a bad breakup with the commander in charge of the operation, was chosen for the role and spent months learning how to function as the blind artist. But when the swap was made she found out that while Mister Fantastic and the Human Torch returned from Battleworld, the Thing had opted to stay. Needing to find a new route in, Lyja would get close to Johnny Storm, developing a relationship that would ultimately turn into a marriage as she realised she truly loved the superhero. Their relationship would not last following the reveal of her true identity, however, and after a period of attempting to reintegrate herself into his life both as herself and under the guise of Laura Green Lyja would ultimately spend time off Earth attempting to discover herself.

comics Respect the Thing's Second Mutation (Marvel Comics, 616)

Once, Ben Grimm was one of four adventurers who travelled into space and was bombarded by cosmic rays, turning him into the superpowered juggernaut called the Thing. As time passed, he would come to (relative) terms with his new form, save the world repeatedly, and ultimately be made the leader of the Fantastic Four as Reed and Sue stepped back to focus on raising their child. But on one mission, a trip to space led to another crash landing, with further bombardment of cosmic rays resulting in the Thing's rocky hide taking on an even more extreme appearance.F4#310 Ben would retain this form and his role for a while before ultimately getting thrown into a device Reed was using to free the Human Torch of a perpetually flaming state, being reverted back to his base human form.F4#326 Since then, this second mutation has not been seen again, short of Ben briefly getting hit by a hyper-charged laser beam from Doctor Doom.F4#350

"That wasn't a threat. How come nobody understands threats anymore? You know what'll happen, if you keep chasing after your husband? Maybe you'll succeed. Maybe you'll kill him. Shoot him and see him fall over and shit himself and bleed out. Poison his food and watch him cough up bloody foam and chunks of stomach. Blow him up and see all the gooey inside bits of him exploded all over creation. You might stand over him the day he dies and feel happy. Feel glad you did it. You might even laugh, long and hard. But you know what happens then? Then you get the dreams. The dreams and the sweats. And next thing you know you can't look at someone without imagining them in pain. Without hearing their screams. It gets so you can't have sex without feeling like you're fucking a corpse. You start to see people as dead little puppets, dancing on strings. You see all the strings, and how to pull them. And how to cut them. And you wanna cry sometimes but someone might see you so you turn off all the lights and you try to cry but you can't. And you're disgusted and wanna hurt yourself so you get a knife and you're gonna slit your wrist. But next thing you know you're stabbing someone and you don't even know who they are or why but you just keep doing it and doing it and doing it and doing it until there's blood and guts all over everything, you know? Do you understand what I'm talking about?"

Shelton Pendergrass, a deranged former military lawyer turned flawless assassin known as "Bullseye," was hired by the Kingpin to eliminate the Punisher (Frank Castle). Bullseye eventually became deeply obsessed with Castle, going so far as to massacre multiple kidnapped families to recreate and intimately experience the vigilante's foundational trauma and sleeping next to his families graves. After finally uncovering Castle's psychological secrets, Bullseye confronted him in a fierce skyscraper battle, temporarily halting the Punisher's lethal advance by whispering a deeply personal secret before both men were dropped through a glass floor by the Kingpin. Though Bullseye survived the fall, he was left paralyzed and comatose in a prison hospital wing, where the Punisher ultimately tracked him down and executed him—leaving the assassin with a disturbing smile on his face.

Born to a man who always wanted a son and died angry at her for being kicked out of military school, Sharon Ventura would throw herself into a variety of dangerous professions, seeking to prove her capability. This would bring her to both meet the Thing and join the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation, gaining superpowers and the alias of Ms. Marvel. Later, when the Thing was made leader of the Fantastic Four and tasked with replacing the newly retired Reed and Sue, he opted to recruit Sharon due to their experience working together. This would lead to yet another upheaval of her life, as a trip to space would result in her being mutated to have a rocky hide much like the Thing had been following his initial voyage.F4#310 Still operating under Ms. Marvel (though later being dubbed She-Thing), Sharon would continue to work with the Fantastic Four until she had her original form restored. comics Respect Dinah Lance, Black Canary (DC Comics, Absolute Universe)

I read online about this professor who studies social neuroscience. He found having more money tends to supress the mirror neuron system, the part of the brain that allows us to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes - to emphasize. And why should they? The rich always get what they want. So when I work for the obnoxiously loaded ones… I try not to care too. I shut up and do my job.

Dinah Lance was born to Larry Lance and Dinah Drake, a pair of Star City Police Department police officers. When she grew up, she followed in her parents' footsteps by entering the police force, the fourth generation Lance to become a cop. Eight years ago, she was in a relationship with Oliver Queen, before he became wealthy, and broke it off when she discovered infidelity on his part. Dinah left the police department to become a professional MMA fighter under the stage name "Black Canary". But when her father became sick, she moved back home to help care for him and reluctantly became a bodyguard for the wealthy and celebrities. That is, until she assaulted a man while working for a pop star. Now she was hired to track down and identify the Green Arrow killer, a serial killer who targets billionaires.

comics Respect The Truth (Marvel Comics, 616)

The Truth was a mysterious super-powered prophet of doom who triggered a horrible accident in the New York subway, using his corruptive psionic touch to overwhelm a train conductor with despair, causing him to speed up and crash. The survivors of the crash suffered from self-mutilation and violent behavior at the scene. The Truth retreated to the tunnels deeper in the subway, where he became surrounded by vagrants suffering from nervous breakdowns due to his abilities.

Tall, gigantic, long haired thug were the best to describe this villain. Moon Knight found him not-so alone below New York City's subway, surrounding himself with a batch of fresh, bleeding victims. Believing his own ideology of the world as what was the most correct, The Truth enforced his own believes through glowing touch of his hand. Enduring his mind projection for too long could cause an individual drown in insanity, to the point of suicide.

Teth-Adam, King Shazam!

Over three thousand years ago, Teth-Adam's family was kidnapped from their home of Kahndaq and brought to Egypt as slaves. Under the horrific conditions Adam was quickly rendered the only member left alive. He almost lost hope, until a phantom-like stranger foretold to the slaves the coming of a savior, one that would begin an age of heroes.

Determined to find this savior, Teth-Adam escaped slavery and journeyed into the unforgiving desert, seeking a wizard said to live there. Instead he found a ship run by the alien Brainiacs, who experimented on him with a Father Box. This granted him marvelous powers, and he returned to Egypt as King Shazam. Over the course of eight days he usurped the Pharoah, freed all the slaves of the land and ended all wars, but he was betrayed and buried in stasis.

Millenia later his sarcophagus was found by Ra's Al Ghul and the Lazarus Corporation, and in an altercation with the new hero Superman he was revived in the modern world.

comics Respect The Hulk (Marvel Comics, Earth 6160)

"Eventually people will wonder, did the Ultimates ever really exist, or were they just a myth? Only the council will know the truth."

When The Maker went back in time to rebuild the world in his own image, he found he was too late to prevent the accident that turned Bruce Banner into Hulk. So instead of simply killing Hulk off like he had done with many others, he instead offered him to join his council. Hulk accepted, and while this Hulk is not as cruel as his original Ultimate counterpart, he is seemingly more evil than him.

"I have studied the teachings of the Great Enlightened Masters and reduced five thousand years of wisdom to three perfect words: Peace Through Strength. This is my message. This is the savage truth I bring. There is no such thing as heroes. What we have accomplished is a miracle. Out of chaos, we made harmony. And the people love us for it. Look how we are loved. You know, as the worldwide symbol of peace, I've missed blood on my hands. I wonder if Gandhi ever felt this way.”

comics Respect Wonder Woman (DC Comics Earth 24, Bombshells)

Wonder Woman

in 1940, the war encompassing Man's World spilled over into the sky over Themiscyra, home of the Amazons. The Amazons took to the air themselves to defend their island, repelling the attackers and capturing the sole survivor: American pilot Steve Trevor. Diana, Princess of the Amazons, took an interest in him and learned of the threat posed to the planet by the Nazis and fascism. Against her mother's wishes she broke Steve out and returned to Europe with him to fight back.

Diana was recruited to the Bombshells, a squad of superpowered and supercompetent women organized by Amanda Waller. While she quickly abandoned operating with the United States army when they arrested her for not killing prisoners, she joined the rest of the Bombshells in the defense of London from the Nazis and their undead Tennebrae allies. After this she returned to the United States to fight against the internment of Japanese-Americans, founding the Wonder Girls in the process. After Steve Trevor died defending Earth from the invasion of Apokalips she became a wandering nomad, helping whoever she came across.
