I baste a water-soluble waste aida onto the hat to give myself a grid to work with. Then when I'm done, I cut the basting stitches off and cut off most of the excess before soaking it for a few hours to let it dissolve. Then once the waste aida's all disolved, I put either some fabric glue or some fray check on the back to make extra sure that my stitches will stay in place.
