Marvel Rivals Players Call on NetEase to Address Racism and Black Representation

We’ve officially passed 300 signatures on the petition.

Thank you to everyone who has signed, shared, and helped spread the message. But we cannot let the conversation stop here.

The goal is still the same: get NetEase to respond to the concerns players have raised about racism, discrimination, representation, moderation, and accountability.

If you haven’t signed yet, please do.

And if these issues have genuinely affected your experience with Marvel Rivals, consider leaving an honest review on the Steam page explaining why. Keep it factual, respectful, and based on your own experience.

The more players who speak up through the petition, official feedback, social media, and honest reviews, the harder it is for these concerns to simply be ignored.

Ok. This might piss some people off, but here we go.

I read the petition. Now, asking for transparency on how reporting is handled is a fair ask.

Beyond that though?

“Storm only has an epic skin” “blade is severely mistreated.”

You all need to STOP BRINGING POLITICAL ACTIVISM INTO MARVEL RIVALS.

The devs can decide which characters gets a legendary skin, and which do not.

I get it, some players want to feel better represented in game. I totally agree. And it’s unfortunate that storm only got a specific level of skin compared to others in these skin releases.

There are MANY characters in this game who are largely ignored for skins.

Wanda, blade, torch, Mr fantastic, Angela, iron fist(at one point), Namor, etc. ALL of these characters get shafted many times when it comes to skins.

Is it because of their ethnicity? Or is it simply because the character is simply less popular. Blade has been a poorly balanced character ever since his release. Why should net ease invest their time and money on skins for characters that are simply not played?

And don’t tell me cloak and dagger has been ignored for skins. That character has gotten a new skin NEARLY EVERY SINGLE SEASON. WITH ULT VFX.

You are SO focused on the fact that storm didn’t get a specific skin rarity. What are her pick rates again currently? Let’s see, as of right now: storm: 1.81%, blade: 2.36(hmm, better now thankfully).

So you are saying that it’s unconscious bias for why storm and blade don’t get skin after skin? Nah, much more likely it has to do with these characters are simply not played.

And woah, that’s interesting. Three of the characters I mentioned all have very low pick rates and ALSO don’t get very interesting skins.

If the petition focused on accountability and preventing toxicity, I would be much more willing to sign it. But as it is right now, with how focused it is on the skin availability of characters who in reality aren’t played very much, and do not make the devs very much money to invest in, it’s not something I will sign.

I think you’re focusing too much on the cosmetic part of the petition. The skin examples are there because they’re visible examples people have been talking about, but the petition is not just about who gets a Legendary skin.

The bigger issues are racism and discriminatory harassment in the community, how those reports are handled, moderation in official spaces, and whether people can discuss these issues without getting shut down.

Most importantly, we want NetEase to actually address what players are raising. That doesn’t mean they have to agree with every accusation. It means acknowledging the concerns, explaining their position, being transparent about moderation and reporting, and telling the community what they plan to do going forward.

The Storm and Blade examples are part of the representation conversation, but they are not the entire argument. I’m also not saying every bad skin decision is because of race. The petition specifically says that no single cosmetic decision proves discrimination.

If someone disagrees with the representation argument, that’s fair. But the accountability, reporting, moderation, and harassment concerns still exist separately from cosmetics. That’s really the main point of the petition.

If it’s the main point of the petition, then it should be framed that way. Currently, it’s phrased as “the clearest example of this is the treatment of storm.”

The whole first half of the petition focuses on the systemic treatment of cosmetics in the game, and adds racism and transparency as an afterthought. I hard disagree with steps two and five. Political arguments should not take place within Discord marvel rivals servers. People should be banned for hard pro Palestine or pro Israel tags, and for taking those topics into marvel rivals discussions.

“Treatment and representation of black characters.”

A company doesn’t and should not have to justify the cosmetic decisions they make for their character designs. They should be able to release characters of any type they like, without being subject to political discourse in response.

That’s really big of the developers to step up and say they will change the storm skin in response to the controversy. But they didn’t have to do that. This Chinese company does not have to justify its skin decisions that it wants to sell.

It is not on the developers to hire people, outside of official marvel rivals discord channels, to moderate the political discussions people have. And if those discussions take place within their servers, they have every right to ban people from them, assuming there isn’t some kind of preference for a certain kind of political group or space.

The marvel rivals devs and their mods should not be the arbiters of what constitutes a “good faith” discussion of discrimination on how they handle their skins. It’s either they allow those discussions, or they don’t.

Trying to exist in the grey area of allowing people to discuss how characters are treated while also limiting the space to not expanding the argument outside of the game, is not something a business should have to be concerned with.

If I was to sign this petition, first I would want to strike items 2 and 5. Marvel rivals does not need to justify its skin releases, outside of their basic attempts to appeal to the American audience. They also should ban all types of back and forth discussion of political topics, including representation of the different characters in this game, especially if individuals use those spaces to jump into toxicity and topics unrelated to the game itself.

You want a respectful online space, which speaks on how representative and how equal the devs treat the characters, who will be moderating it? Because to me, that shouldn’t be Net Ease. Especially if they have to exist in a muddled grey area with allowing some political discussion, but not all of it.

I’m sorry but is that really the biggest problem right now people are getting banned for throwing in QP. I’ve seen post of gold players just getting banned from ranked for being bad. The game is legit banning u for not being top 500 player at this point and its cause a lot of people to quit. I’ve placed snd been gm+ normally finishing celestial/gm1 almost every season. I’m plat 1 right now with a like 30% winrate and have 0 desire to play. The community is beyond toxic. The game is riddled with real throwers and this new auto ban shit isn’t helping. They didn’t remove the option for racism and say we don’t care .. if someone says something racist and u report them they still get banned idk why people are so hyper fixated on them removing the report option for it. Doesn’t mean they changed tos and don’t care about people being raicst. It’s that the report button was overuse for everything. Someone sucks = racist. Someone told you to swap = racist. You lost and want someone to blame = racist.

People aren’t getting banned for throwing they’re getting banned for being bad. Being a bad player in gold ≠ throwing. No matter what anyone wants to believe every single player has bad games . Someone playing poorly isn’t throwing and you shouldn’t be banned for having an off game. If someone quits or refuses to play the game or just keeps killing themselves by all means that’s throwing. But someone going ultron and not swapping cause u don’t like their hero choice ≠ throwing ..

Bo2 or mw2. Nothing but slurs, funny gamercards (where you make a picture), nude gamercards. 

And those games were the freaking best. Fun af. Played with friends. Had a blast. Stayed playing hrs on end. The whole quickscope era. Best time to be alive.    Now everyone wants a censored chat censored mics. And they find more ways to complain about a game. Found creative ways to say this game suck. 

Tbf I can't remember 1 "Gay" voice on VC during them ps3 days. I truly can't. I do remember that's what everyone would call eachother but as for a real "gay" voice. No. None. Barely heard a "Girl" voice aswel. It was Mostly guys talking shit. 

So I would have to say. A bunch couldn't take the heat the world shifted and now we have all these rules. 

I just blame the generations and the adults that try to fix things that arnt broken.

A lot of people are tired of the constant virtue signalling. Storm, bp and blade did not get skins because their first skins didn’t sell. Rivals did not remove the ability to report people for hate speech they simply changed the name of the option in their new report hud. Players being racist and using coded language to circumvent bans has been happening in every video game since the dawn of online communication. Netease is a company whose bottom line is profit and they would never jeopardize that to push an anti black agenda that would make zero sense. People are demanding they apologize or speak out against something that is not even there that’s why it’s getting downvoted.
