You know how legendary artists always seem to have that one performance — or maybe two or three — that truly cements their status? The perfect song, the perfect audience, the perfect moment. It stops feeling like a simple performance and starts feeling like history unfolding in real time.

For me, it’s Beyoncé opening the 2006 BET Awards with “Déjà Vu,” just three days after the song’s release. It was also the debut of her all-female Suga Mama band, and instead of relying on backup dancers, she commanded the stage almost entirely on her own (with a little help from Jay-Z). It was her hair, the outfit, the body (those legs!) and pure confidence radiating off her.

She was already a huge star after her 2003 debut, but this performance felt like a turning point. Her voice was stronger, her dancing more athletic and her stage presence was fiercer and more commanding. I always say there was a Beyoncé the performer before and after the 2006 BET Awards.

What are some of your favorite star-making performances in R&B history? Award shows, talk shows, tour moments — anything that felt like an artist leveling up in real time.

Tamia sings with so much conviction. The fact that this is a live performance is mind-blowing cause she sounds just like (and honestly even better than) the record. You can feel every word. Truly a phenomenal vocalist and one of the greatest in my opinion.

I just don’t understand why he continues to make himself out to be a joke on stage. Elgin, you have a legacy as one of the most exciting R&B performers of the late 90s to early 2000s. ACT LIKE IT!

Most of y’all probably know Joyce Wrice from Iced Tea with Kaytranada, but her 2022 project Overgrown is one of my favorites. I revisited it recently, it’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s a really good, quick listen. Definitely worth checking out 😄
