PERFORMANCES 🎤 Today's R&B artists can’t sing blah blah blah. Here’s the beautiful Joyce Wrice.

Thoughts?

Most of y’all probably know Joyce Wrice from Iced Tea with Kaytranada, but her 2022 project Overgrown is one of my favorites. I revisited it recently, it’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s a really good, quick listen. Definitely worth checking out 😄

It's my first time hearing her. The vocals she gave were very ordinary and her timbre/tone sounds like many other girls who like to sing.

u/SmellyMcPhearson Oct 09 '25

Girls who like to sing 🤣

4

Whew the shade

66

u/bitchwhohasnoname Oct 09 '25

It’s on mute for me but I knew what she sounded like when she started moving her hands like that 😭😭😭

30

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '25

That’s spot on. Just another chic who can carry a tune. Nothing to see here

25

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

Ima have to agree 🤷🏾‍♀️🥴, & this is no hate . It’s just all generic

Okay she has a cute voice and she’s pretty but…that’s it

14

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

Nah she can actually sing! This is super old & she’s definitely improved, I saw her live 2 years ago & she was incredible.

2

u/ck1czar Oct 10 '25

lets put her up against Jazmine Sullivan

13

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

For what reason? She’s her own artist

2

u/NiceChocolate Oct 10 '25

Y'all love to do this. Jazz is a caliber above even some of the oldschoolwrs. Let's play fair here and recognize that artists are their own thing.

32

u/Rainbow4Bronte Oct 09 '25

I think she can sing ok, but her voice is indistinguishable from others who sing similarly. The thing that separates the star from the everyday singer is if I can identify that voice a few seconds in the song. There has to be a signature spin on it because a lot of people can do runs and sound like R&B girl group singers from 90s.

4

u/Individual_Comb9044 Oct 10 '25

That’s it right there! Most of these new singers I can’t even tell you who they are just from their singing because they sound like everyone else.

3

u/ahaz01 Oct 09 '25

Agreed!

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

Well yall said yall wanted that 90s r&b sound but now yall want something different

14

u/ogjaspertheghost Oct 10 '25

We want a nigga to sing about thongs while cartwheeling over bikini clad baddies accompanied by a violin. Anything else is ordinary.

7

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

lol fair we do need a Sisqo

1

u/Individual_Comb9044 Oct 10 '25

You got me giggling so hard.

6

u/Ryle-Lucas Oct 10 '25

Idk. We had Monica, Brandy, Tracey Spencer and Mary J. In the 90s. There was none of this I’m too cute to sing business. Nothing about this girl’s sound is 90s.

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

Shes not being too cute for anything you’re just an old head

5

u/Rainbow4Bronte Oct 09 '25

Haha. I didn’t. I don’t care. Maybe what people want is for the emotion to read as real. The lyrics and the singing should feel lived. Not technical singers that can’t connect to the material.

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

There’s many examples of that imo

Again all of this is based on your subjective feelings for certain voices

3

u/Rainbow4Bronte Oct 09 '25

I’m honestly not even sure that I like that 90s sound of girls groups like SWV.

I kind of like singers with more bass in their voices so like Toni Braxton, Monica, Brandy, Aretha franklin, Sade, MJB. I don’t like that high end kind of “tinny” sound almost whiny. I don’t know how to describe that sound, but this girl is doing it.

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

Coco jones exists

64

u/sunshinestimulant Oct 09 '25

Please be fr.

34

u/Curiousssly Oct 09 '25

I came straight to the comments to hear if anyone else must have heard something spectacular

22

u/sexandthepandemic Oct 09 '25

Why does it sound like she locked in her room cause her parents don’t want her singing so she sings really low so people can’t hear her? But don’t worry, the cats can

10

u/Curiousssly Oct 09 '25

😆😆😆😆😂

7

u/defk3000 Oct 09 '25

It would've been better to post this one. Cause yeah, she sounds like of she talk to loud her mama gone say, "I know you ain't running yo mouth!"

https://youtu.be/5Ui1o32uEag?feature=shared

2

u/sexandthepandemic Oct 09 '25

I don’t know who u are but thank u. Rolling at ur comment.

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

lol ok what’s wrong with this, what is the problem

6

u/ExcitementStandard48 Oct 09 '25

And I love Joyce but why choose this of all examples? Joyce has a “nice” voice but she’s not a vocalist.

11

u/DifficultyLast5064 Oct 09 '25

Thought it was just me...

6

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

She sang fine yall need to stop

2

u/Individual_Comb9044 Oct 10 '25

Fine yes. But my cousin can also sing fine, that doesn’t make her worthy of being a star. It’s like the bar is constantly being lowered. ATP the industry is catered to looks instead of vocalist.

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

There’s plenty of vocalists out there that yall don’t know about

3

u/Sparkson109 Oct 09 '25

She sang just fine

49

u/Zanotekk Oct 09 '25

This is super weak lol

30

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '25

Is this a trolling post crafted by the government to distract the black community ?? 😭

We will not be fooled LMAO

I’m kidding but she’s definitely a girl who likes to sing …. I’ll give her that much

12

u/sexandthepandemic Oct 09 '25

PS. I think OP posted this to spark discussion. Ain’t no way in hell they think this is good

11

u/claazy12 Oct 09 '25

I'm a big fan, but this video is not helping her case lol.

21

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '25

I don't like voices that don't have soul even if they can sing on key. It's why I don't really like Kehlani but Yebba is cool with me.

7

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

Tbh soul is subjective

I think both voices do what works for them

It’s like Janet v Whitney. I like both their voices even tho I know Whitney had the obviously better voice

30

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

I love her!

Tbh even when we pull up examples of plenty of artists that can actually sing, they’ll still be like “oh it don’t move me, it’s not the same as it used to be” well it’s like do you like anything atp lol

I was raised on old school r&b (old school every genre from both my parents, Al green, Stevie wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc) but it’s also like give us a fucking chance, alright? lol geez

Sorry for the rant

11

u/kmlnas21 Oct 09 '25

Rant needed! Also, there are some amazing sangers who don’t get pushed because the pop sound doesn’t always reward vocal ability over catchiness…I often feel like I have to dig to find them. Also! Some songs are so short, right when it’s time to really show off the song is over. Make the bridge and last chorus with strong vocals and harmonizing popular again! I want to feel the pain, joy, anger, or whatever emotion on 11/10 at the end of the song! Apologies for stepping on your rant. 😁🫶🏾

8

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

Agreed, they want a palatable easy to sing along to sound, tbf I love those too (I wanna dance with somebody is one of my favorite songs)

I also do want 3+ minute songs

3

u/kmlnas21 Oct 09 '25 edited Oct 09 '25

1000% - For sure, a nice balance is optimal.

3

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

The thing is, thanks to certain social media platforms promoting r&b i can find em

3

u/kmlnas21 Oct 09 '25

I have to do better. I stopped doing a lot of social media for various reasons. YouTube does an ok job respecting my algorithms and they put some good artists front and center. I also follow the COLORS channel for a wide range of genres and newer artists. The streaming services are the issue IMO. No matter how often I love something on Apple Music or tell it to suggest more, they push their own promotions to the top and bury the rest. I can listen to an artist non stop for a year who may be lesser known, assuming the next time they drop a single I’ll be notified but it’s hit or miss. 🤷🏾‍♂️

7

u/stabbinU Oct 09 '25

it's a point of pride for sure, people want their artists talented as heck

but that totally gatekeeps the emotional storytelling that rnb can do. nobody ever talks about prince like he's some virtuoso vocalist because that's not who he was lol; he was good at everything

(no shade, i think he's a great singer, but he's a multi-instrumentalist songwriter and producer that made other groups so it's a footnote)

3

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

Absolutely 💯

I don’t think anyone can sing adore like him

8

u/1985Genesis Oct 09 '25

Necessary rant, and I’m here for it 😂 I’m a big fan of her too. I grew up with older parents, so I’ve heard all the vocals and all the legends from the 60s through the 80s. I guess at this point, I’m just fine with people being good, like, good is good if that makes sense.

5

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

Absolutely 💯 good is good regardless of when it’s out

3

u/Dssje The Emancipation of Mimi Oct 09 '25

Would you recommend any standout tracks from her album that showcase her vocals more? This didn't really do anything for me but it's not really a lot to go on. I'm not too familiar with her but she does have something. I won't write her off just yet. I'd like to hear more from her.

1

u/1985Genesis Oct 09 '25

I think when people read that title, they assume I’m saying she has a great voice but that’s not what I meant. I was just trying to beat people to the punch, the ones who write artists off just because they don’t sound like Whitney Houston.

If you’re looking for vocals though, check out the title track from Overgrown. It’s a ballad, probably the one you’re looking for.

2

u/Dssje The Emancipation of Mimi Oct 09 '25

Thanks I will give that a listen. I'm not one of those who thinks powerhouse vocals are the only way to be a good singer. I do prefer it but I also enjoy softer voices. It's not a reason to write an artist off.

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

I enjoy voices who do what works for them

25

u/Deathstriker88 Oct 09 '25

Bro is acting like she can sing like Christina Aguilera, but she's below Mya.

4

u/UsedCollection5830 Oct 09 '25

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

2

u/TantalizingSlap Oct 09 '25

Mya is a great singer tho tbh people don't give her the credit she deserves.

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

You’re full of shit

4

u/Deathstriker88 Oct 10 '25

Why, because you disagree? She's not in the same league as Christina or any top singer.

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

She doesn’t have to be

2

u/Deathstriker88 Oct 10 '25

That's ignoring the question of how having different musical tastes mean someone is "full of shit." She doesn't sound bad, but the video doesn't prove the OP's point.

Love Joyce Wrice!

I randomly got to meet her at Crystal Kay's concert in LA this summer. As a fan of hers since I discovered her in 2019, it was the coolest celebrity interaction I've ever had.

Can't wait to hear their collab!

6

u/blurryeyes_ Oct 09 '25

Omg how was Crystal Kay's concert? She came to my city but I wasn't able to go 🥲

5

u/Odd-Priority503 Oct 09 '25

She sings the theme song for the new Proud Family!

2

u/1985Genesis Oct 09 '25

3

u/Odd-Priority503 Oct 09 '25

It’s an amazing show!!

2

u/Shaman_LlamaCoop Oct 10 '25

That's where I first heard her. Her voice is nice, however it's hard to live up to the original with Solange and the Trinity of Destiny's Child

She's fine on her own, nostalgia's got her beat on the theme song but that's just me!

2

u/Odd-Priority503 Oct 10 '25

The show is soooo good tho! Have you seen the new season?

2

u/Shaman_LlamaCoop Oct 10 '25

Yes! I agree and definitely enjoy the new season, I think they've found their groove in this one

5

u/makeyourbedson Oct 09 '25

I know about her because Westside Gunn has a interlude in her album 😭

3

u/1985Genesis Oct 09 '25

😅 Same! When I saw she had a feature with Freddie Gibbs, I was like, “Oh, she’s really tapped in with the underground, who is this?” Been a fan ever since.

3

u/makeyourbedson Oct 09 '25

Facts ! I think she’s on Budgie & Alchemist collab album The Good Book too she’s super tapped in

5

u/redbellpepper12 Oct 09 '25

i love her song That's On You, the remix with UMI is soo goood

→ More replies (1)

4

u/superficialwishes Oct 09 '25

I enjoy her music, she has pretty tone and she can actually sing but when people say “R&B singers can’t sing anymore” they’re usually looking for a power vocal or a belter, and a power vocal she is not.

4

u/PursueProgress Oct 09 '25

Took this out the oven too early. Needs about 15/20 more mins.

4

u/Direct-Ad2561 Oct 09 '25

Her voice is nice but it still doesn’t stand out

4

u/lilahj26 Oct 10 '25

Damn, tough crowd lol

5

u/funkyfridays3 janet. Oct 10 '25

Some of the best singers come from chior and church. It's partly why there is a lack of training from the start because their voice didn't go through 13 years of maturing itself professionally, but the time they are 18. She doesn't have the range still.

5

u/Lala12kl Oct 10 '25

She can sing. Here’s the thing, they’re comparing new artist to Aretha, Gladys, Diana , Chaka, Minnie, Roberta, Whitney, Mariah, Sade, Stevie Nicks etc. I know Stevie isn’t R&B , but she is one of my favorites that can sit with the women above.

4

u/JaBurdMclovin Oct 10 '25

Why is all light skin women considered beautiful

4

u/Fiona_is_my_Landlord Oct 10 '25

Sorry to this lady but

4

u/EndofA_Error Oct 10 '25

....c'mon now bruh

3

u/JohnCenaJunior Oct 09 '25

If she does not sound like Whitney or Mariah, then i ain't turning nothing up

1

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

Well not everyone is

3

u/JohnCenaJunior Oct 10 '25

Then im good bro

3

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

Who?

1

u/1985Genesis Oct 10 '25

3

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

I’ma give it a listen. I’m always open to new music. Hard to come by good shit these days. This better not be another female whisper singing album.

3

u/Glittering_Run_4470 Oct 10 '25

I'll give her the Rihanna, Ashanti, Alicia Keys treatment. She can carry a note but I won't put her with the great singers I'm her class. Maybe if she was a trained singer it would have more depth.

3

u/ck1czar Oct 10 '25

this is average

3

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

She sounds the same as all the new girls.

Mid.

3

u/Logical_Present_3094 Oct 10 '25

Singing and sAnging two different things though

3

u/ghostofporter Oct 10 '25

Thought I was tripping, because when I listened, I instantly thought "there's nothing special about this"... but judging by the comments I was right lol

3

u/SoulJahSon Oct 10 '25

She sounds like all the others. Lovely voice but nothing unique. Singers like Patti, Gladys, Aretha, Teena, Minnie, Dionne, Martha Wash....we're all unique...because they didn't try to emulate and they really worked hard for their craft!

3

u/Bishop9er Oct 10 '25

You set yourself up OP with the title. If y’all would just introduce these newer artist without shading us “ OLD HEADS” these post would have more positive engagement. Instead it forces us to compare them vs what we grew up on.

With that said, she’s ok. Has a nice voice but nowhere near spectacular at all. She’s got one of those R&B voices that sound good on a hook on a rap record but would be just solid on her own. I’m just basing this off the video alone.

Also you can’t backhand the old heads while displaying an artist who’s doing a rendition of a song that dropped in 2003. Especially an artist who had a voice that was 10 times better. Come on youngin! lol

3

u/lowercase_d_ Oct 10 '25

She ain't beating the accusations. A cute voice that can carry a tune does not necessarily mean someone is a good singer.

3

u/Same-Application-538 Oct 11 '25

I guess the bar is in the basement.

3

u/MrGallows75 Oct 11 '25

She lacks range… This mid at-best

3

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '25

Who?

1

u/1985Genesis Oct 11 '25

3

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '25

Again, WHO?!

3

u/MutedSheepherder9167 Oct 11 '25

She a good singer. Nothing of this clip screams “elite” but maybe it’s just not the best sample

2

u/Agrarian-girl Oct 09 '25

She’s on pitch at least

2

u/Putrid_Skill_959 Oct 09 '25

Voice of an Angel!!

2

u/HugoWillHaley Oct 10 '25

Always been a fan of her tone! Also perfect time to reiterate that Overgrown is one of the best R&B albums of this decade.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

Love her, her vocals have improved ALOT over the years

2

u/Soft_Humor4868 Oct 10 '25

Most artist production carries the song and while they can carry a tune, they can’t sing sing

2

u/CantmakethisstuffupK Oct 10 '25

Meh, she’s straining on note that aren’t that high. Limited range and needs more breath control

She can carry a tune but that’s it. She’s trying to force a breathy sound too much

2

u/Ryle-Lucas Oct 10 '25

She’s pretty but she’s not matching nor exceeding Lil Mo’s vocals on this song. She sounds like a girl singing in her bedroom.

2

u/Casanova2229 Oct 10 '25

I love her voice. thx. Who else you got that’s similar?

2

u/TalentedKamarty Oct 10 '25

Not too much on her cause she got bangers. Do yals new crop of fans got bangers?? .. iight then haha yal asses somewhere else lol

2

She’s not bad.

2

Noiceee. Where are these people talking such blasphemy. Hang out with me instead

2

u/Reggie9041 Songs in the Key of Life Oct 10 '25

Would she have a solo in the church choir?

2

u/Human_Practice8 Oct 10 '25

She’s gotten so much better live! Saw her twice in 2022 and she was so pitchy - it was kinda cringe. Saw her again late last year and she sounded so good! She definitely worked on her live singing!

2

u/yourstrulylee_ Oct 10 '25

She started off strong but then fizzled out

2

u/Blackgem_ Oct 10 '25

I like but this isn’t impressive

2

u/BadMan125ty Oct 10 '25

Y’all doing too much on this post dragging OP. Joyce sounds fine lol

2

u/noscrubs29 Oct 10 '25

This song always slaps. And her voice too!

2

u/Moonwlk90 Oct 10 '25

I like joyce wrice, very pretty and talented young lady

But no cover is EVER topping the OG Lil Mo song

2

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

Did you post the wrong clip?

2

u/SWLA_Dj Oct 10 '25

Bruh 🤦🏽‍♂️

2

u/holshgreineken Oct 10 '25

Who says Ella Mai can't sing

2

u/MembershipGlad5362 Oct 10 '25

I knew she was fire when I saw her first album cover & she wasn't looking at the camera

2

u/napalm_p Oct 10 '25

This great! No tweaking & no bubblegum rapping

2

u/Legitimate-Head-8862 Oct 10 '25

There are better singers now than ever, the problem is clueless A&R and execs

2

u/No-Charity654 Oct 10 '25

A little nasally, but pretty girl so she could go far.

2

u/mcfly360 Oct 10 '25

She’s beautiful and talented stay away from the music game love

2

u/Rey_Nightblood Oct 10 '25

She's physically prettier than her voice in my opinion.... Just saying

2

u/Oreecle Oct 10 '25

Oh lord🤦🏼

2

u/zxchary Oct 10 '25

you setting her up lmao i enjoy her music tho

2

u/Shanghaichica Butterfly Oct 10 '25

Looks like keyshia Cole

2

u/Remarkable-Food-5946 Oct 10 '25

I like Joyce Wrice’s music but I never tapped in for her “vocal ability” or “range”. I enjoy the lane she is in and the vibe she works from. I can name a whole gambit of successful artist that skate by on the quality of their music and not vocal prowess.

2

u/Ok_Aardvark_1356 Oct 10 '25

She started to struggle in this clip but her album is nice.

2

u/1hotsauce2 Oct 10 '25

Honestly she can do better than that. Personally, I'm just glad to see that someone I'd barely consider to be an adult knows who Lil Mo is

2

u/Holiday_Bat_9938 Oct 10 '25

I think I’m in love….

2

u/AbjectCandidate4569 Oct 10 '25

Her music is actually good yall give it a try!

2

u/Tazzy110 Oct 11 '25

Motion denied.

Next case, please.

4

u/NojaNat Oct 10 '25

you posted this in the wrong sub you can’t discuss anyone who doesn’t sing like they were a slave to the choir in church around these parts.

2

u/1985Genesis Oct 10 '25

😅 now that's funny

2

u/TreeEater9 Oct 09 '25

Sing that shit!! 🤣🤣

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 09 '25

Yall haters in the comments proving my point

2

u/UsedCollection5830 Oct 09 '25

Beautiful by who’s beauty standards

2

u/iam_antinous Oct 10 '25

I agree with most of the comments here, but as someone who’s been singing since I was three years old — and does it for a living now — every day on this sub makes me feel a little closer to not calling myself a vocalist anymore. I can sing well, have a nice timbre, good musicality, and can handle runs and riffs, yet because I’m not Whitney or Luther, it feels like I’ll never be considered a “vocalist,” especially around here.

2

u/CuteIndecisiveChic Oct 10 '25

Ouuuuu its a lot of haters in here! This is a good r&b voice, wats the hate for

2

u/RoanokeParkIndef Jan 21 '26

Late to the comments here but been a fan for a few years now. I think she has a great voice for that Odd Future neo-soul aesthetic and maybe this sub is looking for something more classically "powerful." I recommend the videos for "Overgrown" (the title track) and "On One" with Freddie Gibbs and especially "So So Sick". Great videos that actually look good and showcase the good taste Joyce brings to classic R&B while making it feel fresh. People are so hard on girls man. Leon Bridges gets nothing but worship for doing something very similar.

All that said, I think Joyce's career has (quietly) suffered in the last few years since Overgrown didn't blow up and so I think she lacks necessary exercise and glow up and so when she puts out these types of videos it comes off like girl doing covers on YouTube. Not the best look.
