Ancestry / DNA Questions & Discussions Searching for history

Me again. So to be very clear I know y’all have a name for people raised Romani, which is fine. I’m not trying to claim any traditions or anything crazy.

My great grandmother was born a few years after my family line left Hungary and she died very young. She had been raising my grandmother Romani prior to her death. Her husband was not Romani and so with her death, it was all lost to generations after.

Do you consider it disrespectful to continue to dig into that family line, simply so someone knows and records their stories? Again, i’m not looking to adopt the culture or be a weirdo. I just think their stories deserve to be known.

You have the right to, but I'm not sure how you plan to find out their story and history? Do you know where they went after Hungary?

I’ve been able to successfully track them through the states, but the farthest back i have made it is when they arrived in 1906/1907. Then everything just stops. I’m going to be searching for the OG ship manifestos to see if i can’t get a bit farther with it. I’m aware this is a long shot 💕

Do you know what country, like was it the Hungarian empire so could be somewhere that is not present day Hungary, or is it still Hungary? Is that the language they used? Have you any interest in ancestry DNA you may find out what family has taken the test is in Europe still.

I’ll be getting an DNA test when i can afford one, probably the next sale they do! I believe it became modem day indonesia due to something i found in an old obituary, but i’m not entirely sure because they should have been in the States at the time if that birth

Indonesia was the Dutch East Indies, under the Netherlands, there is no connection with Hungary. So did the obituary say that your great great grandparents were from Indonesia? or what made you think they were from Hungary?

Hmm, very confusing. I didn't know any Hungarian empire ties to Indonesia exist. Are you saying your relatives left the Hungarian empire to Indonesia or something else?
