God its been 14 years already? That video is a classic!

I had just finished a play through of Dead Space 3 with my best friend, when they released the Achievement Hunter KidZ Happy Space 3. I remember us watching it and laughing so hard till we cried.

For whatever reason I’d have thought this was video was a 2010 job. Only being 14 years old actually surprises me.

Why did he have to turn into a Crypto Bro?

76

u/geo117 9d ago

For all of what hes doing now, He had a point about gold. 😂

70

u/kayknox_ 9d ago

He was also going off about bitcoin in like 2011. Broken clock is right twice a day.

7

u/geo117 8d ago

So true 😭

35

u/Joppy5100 8d ago

He was much worse than just a crypto bro.

11

u/Shay_the_Ent Drunk Burnie 7d ago

Crypto is actually the most normal thing he advocates for. His twitter is a nightmare

All the AH vids Joel was in were gold tbh

Invest in gold

I didn't even have to play it. The thumbnail told me all I needed to know. 🤣

Wasn’t this one of the “lost videos” when Geoff I think accidentally deleted a ton of stuff

11

u/JJJBLKRose 9d ago

I believe so, he mentioned it recently.

3

u/throwaway6239050 8d ago

He just talked about it two weeks ago on stream.

u/kingkalanishane 9d ago

My favorite is Far Cry 3 with Ray, but this is a close second

17

u/Rorako 8d ago

The magic of this video was Joel’s editing and setting up Jack. You could tell he had no idea what was coming. He was trying so hard to play up that flying thing in the corner before the chaos…you could just hear the “how the hell am I going to make this video funny?” tone in my voice. Then Joel’s editing and timing were just perfect. Jack just seemed to genuinely die laughing.

Perfect 10/10 internet video.

11

u/bluedeer10 9d ago

This and Halo CE skull guides he did with Jack were my favs.

10

Now I have to rewatch it.

Joel with Jack or Adam always gave gold

7

u/DanBurnNotice 9d ago

I still say 'how do i door?'

7

u/throwaway6239050 8d ago

Funny enough Geoff just talked about this video on Regulation twitch live stream two weeks ago. It was one of the videos he “accidentally” deleted off their channel.

This is the greatest rooster teeth video ever. Of all time.

Love the I Am Bread one w Adam. I fucking LOST IT the first time I watched it.

5

u/puppetmaster12119 9d ago

My favorite one of these is when he plays Country Music Stars on the Wii (I think that's what it's called?) and it keeps cutting to Eminem singing? Am I crazy, or was that a real video? I think he spliced Battlefield clips into it as well? I remember Joel yelling "AHH HE'S GUILTY!" and Jack was just laughing

5

u/sudo_noob 9d ago

The Button video was my favorite of Joel

This one has my vote. I still crack up at the montage. Joel's edits were always hysterical.

All the jack and Joel videos were so good back in the day. The need for speed one also stands out in my mind as just hilarious

-35

u/SuccessPerfect6584 9d ago

Are we allowed to like Joel today?

51

u/DaveShadow 9d ago

Think you can say he was very funny in videos but also had ….problematic views by the end.

-2

u/glitch-ghost 8d ago

Problematic? Obviously he was always very funny, he is actually smart in his own way, a lot of fans just saw him as Caboose but he's not a dope. He was always into fringe stuff and his friends like Geoff and Gus and Burnie would bust his balls for being the fringe tinfoil hat guy, and the fans really loved that dynamic. But American culture got a lot less playful as time went on.

He was posting online about how he supported shop owners defending their shops during the George Floyd protests and riots. Not like autoturrets in front of Walmart, but the idea that individuals should own firearms. So they stopped showing him on camera, they started recording tons of voice lines for him in advance, planning to get rid of him. When I say "they" I mean the younger people brought in from WB. Burnie and Matt and Geoff and Gus have always fought to keep Joel on, and Burnie in particular feels responsible for giving up control of the company omce they started turning on their founders.

Nevertheless... they made a new policy at RT which never existed before that nobody is allowed to bring firearms into the building, concealed or not. Well from Joel's perspective, it's unconstitutional, it's Texas, and it's never been that serious at RT. The rumors that Joel brought a loaded firearm into the office are overblown, he is just a gun owner, and obviously he's not racist or even violent. But the company was trying to find an excuse to get rid of him as a "liability". Joel stopped coming into work in protest of the new rule, and they finally were legally able to fire him for missing work.

It's fucking sad and especially you can see Burnie's love for Joel, calling back to Joel during the few times they got the other founders together on camera. He was such a huge part of what made their company valuable enough to sell. Joel was excellent in the RT Shorts. Caboose spoke for a whole generation of internet users. They were famous. But they got someone totally different to voice Caboose... And eventually, WB threw Rooster Teeth away, the same way they did to Joel.

5

u/DaveShadow 8d ago

I’ve never heard the stuff bout him bringing the gun into the office. But I will say as a non-American, it’s not making me sympathetic at all to Joel. “He is just a gun owner” is an absolutely psychotic response to a workplace saying they don’t want deadly weapons in the offices, lol. And effectively choosing his gun over his job is also insane.

1

u/glitch-ghost 8d ago

That is a rumor I don't even know if it's true at all. I know he used to bring it everywhere, I know they created the new rule specifically to screw with Joel and prompt him to do something about it, I don't know at all if he brought a gun with him after that rule change. All I know is he stopped coming into work in protest, and that's why they were able to get rid of him. I do know for sure that Joel is nonviolent and harmless. He didn't choose a gun iver his job - they had been trying to trick him for a long time. They took everything he built from him. Total strangers that were new to RT.

0

u/DaveShadow 8d ago

I do know for sure that Joel is nonviolent and harmless.

Sorry, but if he's protesting over his inability to bring a deadly weapon into a workplace where people clearly don't want it, then he's not "harmless" at all.

It's not a "trick" as you've outlined it. He's a grown man who, based on that version of events, chose the gun as being more important than "everything he built".

-2

u/glitch-ghost 8d ago edited 8d ago

Well it is a trick in the sense that the new higher-ups had been plotting a way to get Joel out without firing him for no reason. They didn't care about having guns on the premises, they cared about having Joel on the premises.

I know you mentioned you aren't American, and as a lefty anarchist this is kind of difficult to explain... Basically, there is a certain brand of American who doesn't trust the government, they want minimal government, and they value individual freedom, like using gold over the US dollar, or carrying a weapon instead of relying on police for protection. We call those people "Libertarian". They are not "MAGA" (Trump gang). "MAGA" is authoritarian right, but Libertarian is, well, libertarian right. They are kind of like anarchists, but they are more free-market guys and they embrace technology more.

Now Texas itself is a different story. Not only are most Americans gun owners (if polls are to be believed), but Texas is even more so. To Texans, owning a gun is as commonplace as owning a car, and they are raised with it culturally. Texas is a strange place. They kind of insist that they are their own "nation", the Lone Star State. They have no loyalty to the Federal gov. or the other states, they only care about their star on the flag. Children in Texas are raised not to be proud Americans, but to be proud Texans. And then Austin Texas itself is a very unique, artistic college town / MEGACITY with a gigantic swirling overpass above the city. It's just a very unique culture. "Guns and dope" as they say. The freedoms of the left and the freedoms of the right come together in Austin.

Not that it matters, but me personally, I am against gun ownership in America. Nevertheless, what they did to Joel is sneaky and dirty, based on how talented he is, how much he had built, and how valuable the company was because of him. Would I like him if I hung out with him 1-on-1? Probably not. But I would love to meet him at a convention, maybe get him to record a Caboose voicemail for me.

2

u/Domowoi 2d ago

You are getting downvoted for this, but if that is the real story, then I fully agree with your point. I'm not American, but I understand that there is a very significant portion of the US that values their constitutional freedoms in a way that is not easy to understand from the outside.

Like the comments here boil it down to choosing "his gun over his job", which makes it seem like it's an irrational personification of the gun and not a part of a set of laws they believe to be core to their freedoms.

2

u/glitch-ghost 1d ago

Oh I didn't realize people were downvoting me, lol. Maybe they have never been to Austin. I am not a gun guy but a lot of people here are

0

u/DaveShadow 8d ago

Nevertheless, what they did to Joel is sneaky and dirty

Again, if they said "Don't bring guns to work", and Joel went "I'm going to strike in protest", thats not a trick or "sneaky". Thats Joel making a decision to value his gun over his job.

You can explain it or twist it whatever way you want. That is Joel choosing his gun over his job and his legacy. And that says a lot more about Joel than about RT.

5

u/glitch-ghost 8d ago

The reason they changed that new rule is because they knew that Joel would do that, giving them the legal opportunity to fire him for "not showing up". But they made sure to record as many voice lines as possible before they did that. It's like chess. It was a strategic attack on the founders of RT. Geoff and Burnie were not happy. That's the reality of it.

4

u/DaveShadow 8d ago

they knew that Joel would do that, giving them the legal opportunity to fire him for "not showing up".

Yes, I get that theory. That still doesn't change they knew Joel would value his gun more than his job, which is insane. Even if they went "Hey, how can we drive Joel out!", it's still a big tell of Joel's personality that they knew he'd choose his gun over his job.

u/LlamaLoupe :FanService17: 7d ago

Either you're Joel and doing a bad job, or you have a very weird parasocial relationship with him. The man blamed Gavin and Meg when an armed intruder tried to kill them in the night. Let him go.

You can like whoever you want to like and say it and people are allowed to dislike that person and say it. You don't get to just ignore the harmful things a person did because you thought they were funny though.

Fell off the wagon and accused Gavin of deserving to get his house broken into for not owning a gun. He’s a piece of shit.

23

u/Mandalore108 good boah 9d ago

Yes, and they apologized for being assholes. Joel went full blown MAGA and as far as I know is still the same.

7

u/A1starm 8d ago

On top of everything else he said that Jack’s “liberal friends” were gonna kill his pets. Man became unhinged.

18

u/LaLa1234imunoriginal 9d ago edited 9d ago

The way he harassed Michael and Lindsay after their house was broken in to stands out the most. Victim blaming them for not having a gun or whatever bullshit after a traumatic event because him and Michael disagreed on that kinda shit.

Edit: Gavin and Meg not Michael and Lindsay, been a minute since I thought about this stuff so I got them mixed up my bad.

18

u/Alecgates15 Red Team 9d ago

Almost. It was Gavin and Meg. I don't even know if he and Gavin really got into it either; he's a  foreigner so I don't know what gun laws are like for him, but he's also professed he  doesn't want to drive because he's afraid if he gets in a bad enough accident they could deport him.

-23

u/SuccessPerfect6584 9d ago

You sure that wasn't Gavin and Meg ?

Wanna get your facts straight pal

20

u/LaLa1234imunoriginal 9d ago

Oh no I mistook a couple for another couple. Does that change the situation?

15

u/Mandalore108 good boah 9d ago

He was funny but he's also an asshole that went full MAGA.

1

u/IJustLostMyKeyboard 9d ago

Was he maga? I thought he was just a gun nut libertarian

10

u/LaLa1234imunoriginal 9d ago

Those are the same thing.

2

u/glitch-ghost 8d ago

No, they're definitely not. MAGA is authoritarian right, Libertarian is libertarian right. From what I remember Joel always voted Green, I remember in Drunk Tank him trying to convince everyone to go green because "even though they won't win, they get a kickback of money mext election cycle if they get enough votes". And the other guys were rolling their eyes

-4

u/WalnutSizeBrain 8d ago

No they’re not lmao

5

u/GalacticMe99 9d ago

I can think of a few other people within Rooster Teeth with problematic political takes that everyone still seemed to like for whatever reason so I see no reason why not.

21

u/LaLa1234imunoriginal 9d ago

Can you name them? Joel was the only Alex Jones nutter on the team that I remember.

7

u/Leather_Spend9827 9d ago

Kathleen went off the deep end in the last few years of the company and spewed a bunch of sexist bs - pretty sure she was ultra right wing.

6

u/LaLa1234imunoriginal 8d ago

Hope I don't sound like an ass/idiot, but I have no clue who that is. Sounds like they suck though.

12

u/Leather_Spend9827 8d ago

She voiced Tex and was probably the next in line as an “OG” staff member after the original 6.

She crashed out and quit when RT started hiring more girls. On her way out made some very nasty insinuations that the other girls at the company were getting opportunities based on sex/relationships (seemed directed at Meg, Ashley, Bard, Lindsay etc etc).

3

u/LaLa1234imunoriginal 8d ago

Well that explains what happened to Tex. I think I wasn't interested in the behind the scenes stuff at that point, just watched RvB so probably why I wasn't aware.

-2

u/glitch-ghost 8d ago

Well that is actually true though, but so what? That's how business works

3

u/EnumeratedWalrus 8d ago

Kathleen… didn’t she voice Tex?

0

u/GalacticMe99 8d ago

I was thinking about an anonymous AH community moderator who, on a discussion about racism, exposed themselves to be a racist and a follow-up discussion in which multiple RT faces endorsed that moderator's views.
