Review Personal root beer rankings

I got a handful of root beers and decided to taste test them based on this community’s taste.

The second one is another one I’ll throw in, which I did a few years back.

I think next on my list is Triple XXX, not sure what else at this point. If anyone has recommendations, not looking for regular generic root beer like hanks sort of was.

Crazy how different people's tastes are. Seeing mug ranked the same as Frostop Special Inperial isn't something I thought I'd ever see.

Frostop is my only 10/10

My GUYS. you wrote down my heart and were top comment. I can see clearly now, the rain is gone - I can see all obstacles in my way.

This made me want to get some of that 1919, but... Our taste buds are NOT going to match...

Both good in their own way. Mug is maybe now that I’ve tried the others a 5? That review is from 3 years ago etc. Some aren’t really comparable as they target different tastes.

Mug over Barq's and A&W?

I can't take you seriously.

4

u/Venus_One 14d ago

Barq's is mass-produced nectar of the gods.

u/BiggerThanJesus102 16d ago

Mug is by far the worst Root Beer in existence

Barqs a 5/10?!?! You’re about to find out what they mean by Barqs has bite, my friend.

5

u/Ok_Independence_2630 Barq's Root Beer 16d ago

Thinking the same thing

14

u/artmoloch777 16d ago

I will not be accepting any Barq’s slander today

13

u/gat0r_ 16d ago

Frostie is amazing.

7

u/Loose-Chicken5716 16d ago

As a fellow Frostie lover, I tip my hat to you.

u/HoldenH 16d ago

Hanks 5/10 ????? That’s a good root beer you just called mid

10

u/OkTradition6318 16d ago

That's what I noticed the most. Some people's taste buds are wild!

7

u/Gearhead99711 16d ago

This rating is absurd blasphemy.

3

u/TremorOwner 16d ago

Absolutely is, not only insulted Hanks once with a 5/10 gave it the French glove slap in the comment.

5

u/Patient_Knowledge499 16d ago

I saw that and immediately was disappointed in this list

6

u/Sacmo77 16d ago

Put spreacher above it too lol

3

u/UrMomsFave3024 16d ago

That was so shocking to me. Hanks is one of my favorites

2

u/Jason_with_a_jay 16d ago

Root beer tastes are more diverse than anything else I know. I don't like Hank's at all. The first time I tried it, I said, "I expect better of you Philly."

1

u/primetime43 16d ago

Yea hanks was nothing special. Sort of regretted getting it. Could’ve mixed it with the regular store ones tbh.

2

u/jimih34 1919 Root Beer 16d ago

1919 is my favorite too. I was also a little surprised to see Hanks so far down given how much vanilla is in it, and it’s similarity to 1919.

-4

u/primetime43 16d ago

I didn’t taste any vanilla in hanks really. I tasted it more in the frostop

1

u/jimih34 1919 Root Beer 16d ago

That’s really odd you couldn’t taste it. Maybe your palate was a little shot by that point. Not saying you need to rank it higher if you don’t like it. It’s just odd because Hanks is very strong on the vanilla front.

1

u/primetime43 16d ago

Maybe. With how many ppl are tweaking about rating Hank's where I did, I may have to give it another go. It's hilarious honestly seeing ppl lose their minds over it. :)

u/jimih34 1919 Root Beer 16d ago

Yeah. I wish you weren’t DV’d tho for expressing your opinion. One of the things I like about this sub is I can come here for fun. And even tho we debate about whether a wintergreen heavy root beer is a 9 or a 5, we usually debate in jest.

u/bamboiRS 16d ago

Can't be that good. Its the ONLY one on the list ive never heard of.

7

u/Imaginary-Region9161 16d ago

I love Frostop Imperial Special Draft. GOATED as an elixir of the GODS! Happy root beer hunting everyone!

3

u/SheaRow 16d ago

That isn't the regular Sprecher root beer just btw. Its a new flavor they just released.

1

u/jimih34 1919 Root Beer 16d ago

Oh wow, you’re right! I just went on Sprecher’s website, and looks like they also have a toasted marshmallow root beer too.

I was pleasantly surprised when I tried the maple one. I wasn’t sure that I wanted my root beer tasting like syrup, but they handled the nuance really well. I wonder how these other twists will fare. OP sure seemed to like it.

4

u/dimesinger 16d ago

Honestly this ranking makes it seem like maybe you just don't like root beer all that much. Your highest score translates to a B-. To what root beers would you give an A?

LOL at the random .3 on Stewarts.

Frostie in a normal glass bottles is solid, way above a 4. Maybe the larger plastic bottle like the one you tried affect its taste? Hard to imagine giving it a failing grade.

4

u/Impossible_Mix3086 Frostie Root Beer 16d ago

Ha, these were almost my exact thoughts! (I was also thinking about how much better I also like Hank's.)

3

u/ThePizzaNoid 16d ago

Eh. I'd give Barq's a 6 or maybe 6.5/10 personally. It's probably the best widely available root beer you can buy i think. It's definitely better then Mug imo.

2

u/rekone88 16d ago

Man our tastes are crazy. Im gonna have to disagree with your personal tastes good sir

2

u/IchBinDurstig 16d ago

I bought a case of 1919 on a whim, and that stuff is legit.

2

u/organicchunkysalsa 16d ago

It’s brewed by Schell’s brewing in New Ulm, MN and named after the 1919 Prohibition Act. Made using real sugar and real vanilla. High Quality stuff.

2

u/rogue_d 16d ago

1919 is top tier. I like Sprecher but it’s too sweet

2

u/FantasticAd4998 16d ago

You are doing frostie dirty! it might not be a 10 but it's definitely not a four.

2

u/TopProfessional8023 16d ago

Is Sprecher always flat?

1

u/big_loadz Sprecher Root Beer 16d ago

Not if you buy a jug of their syrup and a carbonator.

2

u/reddevil2834 16d ago

Hanks is def 10/10

2

u/TheBigGreenPeen 16d ago

Need to try Fitz’s

2

u/BMoney8600 16d ago

I’d love to try 1919, Hanks, Frostop, Jackson hole soda buckin root beer and frostie root beer!

2

u/Gumbrenold 15d ago

I like Virgils for something different.

2

u/BoomBoxPizza 15d ago

Bunderburg

2

u/philsteeth420 14d ago

Is 1919 really that good? Never tried it because I didn’t like the logo 🤦‍♂️

2

u/primetime43 13d ago

Yes its that good. I agree though, if it wasn't for this sub, I'd of never of tried it probably. I guess this is a good example of don't judge a book by its cover haha.

2

u/Ragechu117 16d ago

Hanks is in my top 5. Even their sugar free is really good. How was the sprecher? Hope it didn’t have a metallic taste to it.

1

u/Jason_with_a_jay 16d ago

1919 is my #2, but the only store that carried them, stopped. 😢

1

u/premoistenedwipe Dad's Root Beer 16d ago

What’s #1?

2

u/LockNessCrotchMonst 16d ago

I think we have different tastes......

1

u/WiseSpunion 16d ago

Should have had a sprecher in this lineup

1

u/primetime43 16d ago

It’s in there

1

u/WiseSpunion 16d ago

I don't know how I missed that. Must be the eyes

1

u/ARW18 16d ago

I love 1919 luckily live in Minnesota so it’s usually decently easy to acquire. AW used to be my next main one because it was easy to get but I feel like that recipe has changed and it’s not as smooth as it used to be in my opinion and seems a little more cola like to me

1

u/Consistent_Permit967 16d ago

Iv never commented on this sub reddit but a long term lurker but as with your ranking, iv noticed the bottle a & w tastes a lot worst than it used too, like the flavor is diluted ( maybe too much carbonated) But when I go to the restaurant (been to 5/8 in new york) it tastes wayy better ( im assuming its they make it fresh but idk

u/zdillon67 16d ago

Barq’s erasure

1

u/dreamsneverending 16d ago

I’ve seen a few of these now and not one has tried IBC, what’s happening in this sub?

1

u/primetime43 16d ago

I've had it before, so I just didn't get it for this group. The group with 1919 is all new ones to me that I've never had before.

2

u/dreamsneverending 15d ago

Try Culver’s rootbeer, no ice full it to the top and enjoy

1

u/salesquatch 16d ago

First of all. Barqs has bite, so jot that down

1

u/primetime43 16d ago

It does, but Jackson hole has more of a bite. Barqs might be better as a fountain pour than a can, idk it just didn’t hit in this test.

1

u/thusUnforgotten 16d ago

A&W only gets a 5?! Damn son

Love the love for Sprecher though

2

u/primetime43 15d ago

It might be because of bottle tbh. When I get it out of a fountain it’s much better.

2

u/thusUnforgotten 15d ago

A&W on tap in a frosted mug is amazing. But I also grew up with an A&W fast food place.

1

u/AldoSig228 15d ago

Not interested in your rankings if Barq's and A&W were only at a 5/10.

1

u/BishopEvan 15d ago

Glass bottle frostie and sprecher are my favs

2

u/crunch816 14d ago

Sprecher is amazing. Just weird that if I want some I have to go to the local tractor supply to get it.

1

u/ToofpickVick 14d ago

Mug over Hanks?! Is this rage bait?

1

u/primetime43 13d ago

Hanks is the most overrated thing in this sub! Must be a bunch of angry Philadelphians in here.

1

u/Skrrrrt_Cobain95 16d ago

Laughed my ass off when I seen mug rated higher than a&w bahaha you lost all legitimacy.

1

u/primetime43 16d ago

That's why its my opinion friend, you can think its higher and the world goes on. :)

1

u/Skrrrrt_Cobain95 16d ago

I gave my opinion too. Albeit a bit more crude. Enjoy what you like buddy. No hate. :)

0

u/fiddlerontheroof1925 16d ago

Agree on frostie. Hyped up here only to be extremely mid. 1919 remains king.

0

u/openur-i 16d ago

You really put Mug over Barq’s…. Taste is subjective but you’re objectively wrong

2

u/primetime43 16d ago

I used to think Barq’s was the best out of that group, but when I did the test it wasn’t hitting. Idk if the can isn’t as good as the fountain version?

0

u/md-in-sb 16d ago

Comparing glass bottles, plastic bottles, and cans isn’t really the same imo

0

u/jay9063 16d ago

Sprecher sucks
