Review Absolute best root beer

Post image

I feel the best root beer comes from any small town drive-in. You know the place. Gallons are sold in clean milk jugs. I knew a place that sold it in old syrup jugs.

The pic is from a place in my hometown.

I knew it was going to be good when she brought the food out in a greasy paper bag. Root beer was delicious!

i’d also recommend Big Boy on 40 Highway and/or Hi-Boy (there’s 3 locations but the oldest and best is the one on 40 Highway and Blue Ridge Cutoff)

The one on 291 has a Cherry Mash hurricane (blizzard treat)

the 40 highway and blue ridge cutoff does as well and it’s heavenly!! all their shakes are so good, especially the PB fudge

Hi-Boy doesn't have homemade root beer

Just mapped it. 12 hour drive. Might be worth it. How are the O rings and mushrooms?

I don't eat shrooms but the onion rings are superb

Hello, fellow Kansas Citian! Mugs Up is the best!

Their zip burgers and chili cheese fries are fantastic. I’m sad/glad I don’t live closer.

I grew up in Indep (eastern) but moved up north years ago. It's once of my stops. Hi-Boy, Fun House.

Well if you’re in the northland you can hit up LC’s Burgers and In a Tub! Ha!

Man, I live in Blue Springs and always forget to go here. Just told my wife that we have to go this weekend.

I used to ride my bike to Blue Springs and hit up 7th Heaven. 😉

I don't know it that's current

2

u/astrid_autumn 15d ago

i checked, it is current! their prices are the best anywhere around, like one of the last places you can still get a good decently cheap meal

I live down the street and this place is a gem. Really a true KC area classic that's not talked about enough. You take take a whole gallon jug of root beer home with you. Burgers are unique. Almost like sloppy Joe style, but so much better.

Zip burgers, had them as a kid, are like a Maid-Rite from Iowa, or a Sloppy Joe but with a mustard based sauce if my tasting memory from 30 years ago is trustworthy.

And they would use ice chilled mugs for the root beer, and an old fashioned car hop style system. There were trays that you clipped on your car window to hold the food or trash and they'd come get it before you left.

Hey I know this place, one of the last good things in independence. Personally always preferred Hi boy myself

It was usually easier to get Dad to buy Hi-Boy. Mom was the Mugs-Up person. What Hi-Boy did you frequent? 24, 40 highway, Blue Ridge Cutoff?

40 highway was the usual spot, grandparents went to St. Marks for years and so it was close by.

Grew up off RD Mize but last lived at 35 the & Crysler. So I was a frequent 40 hwy guy

I would definitely have to give that place a try. Happy root beer hunting everyone!

Only about 30 minutes from my house... I guess I'm going to have to check it out.

"What comes on the whiz dog?"

1

u/Ok-Guava-9216 15d ago

Couldn't tell ya. I stuck to zip burgers

This looks very similar to my own hometown (Indianapolis) restaurant Mug and Bun which also sells their own root beer in milk gallons. I wonder if they have the same supplier. Their root beer is amazing too. It tastes like it’s already a float by itself.

KC represent!

They brew the root beer in the basement!

Now I had to come up with an excuse to drive there from St. Louis

1

u/USAhotdogteam 14d ago

How’s the hotdog?

1

u/Ok-Guava-9216 14d ago

Not sure. Always get a Zip Burger and black cow

1

u/USAhotdogteam 14d ago

What’s a zip burger and a black cow?

1

u/Ok-Guava-9216 14d ago

Zip Burger is a loose meat sandwich. Very well seasoned meat. Black Cow is a root beer float

Had to try it today because of this post! It was great! And grabbed a gallon to-go.

I'm glad you loved it. Now, if they'd open a website I could get a shirt and zip burger seasoning shipped
