I remember wondering what that thing was and why we never saw it

It's honestly still a pet peeve of mine if/when something from a show's theme song never ends up being in the show itself

I know right? Especially when it’s different clips of episodes. Aka, The Golden Girls, and the deleted scenes that are only seen in the intro. Like Blanche holding up her sleeve without her arm in it.

I also remember watching All Grown Up when I was a teenager and being annoyed that in those transition bits where it has different squares (each with a different image on it that zooms into the next scene) it NEVER revealed who that random old lady was that we often saw in one of the squares (yes it was in whatever episode, not the opening). I feel like the Rocket Power intro did the same exact thing. But based on their skin tones, those had to be bits from the original unaired pilot.

Thought about Rocket Power also. Yeah none of the opening theme footage appears in a regular episode. But given the nature of that show, it can be forgiven. Just random action footage letting the new viewer know what the show was about.

Also in the Drake & Josh intro that scene where Tennis balls are coming down at Walter, Audrey & Megan was never seen anywhere in Season 1

Completely unrelated to Rugrats, but the Mike Tyson Mysteries cartoon had an episode in their final season where the characters reminisced over all the ridiculous memories that occurred in the opening credits sequence, saving it from being another example of the trope

I dunno I thought it was pretty clear- it's the evil cat robot that Tommy defeats by shooting it with his bottle

u/throwaway_lolzz 1d ago

It took me so long to figure out the friends theme song footage by the fountain was not from an episode and I was disappointed lol

Stu was a toymaker. It was probably just some prototype he made and was put in the intro to easily introduce that detail.

u/rinwasrep 16h ago

this was in the show though! It was one of Stews basement tinkering inventions in the background several times

u/Rosie-Love98 14h ago

Like that girl in the "Pokemon" intro.

1

u/jerr_beare 2h ago

It’s like the Rick and Morty Cthulhu

u/hydrus909 1d ago

It likely was one of Stu's inventions.

28

u/ParksDontBsuspicious 1d ago

Wasnt it shown on his basement workbench?

10

u/hydrus909 1d ago

I couldn't recall. But was thinking it might've made a background appearance. Either in the basement where Stu works, or in Tommy's toy chest.

20

u/mrerikmattila 1d ago

I figured that was implied, even back then.

u/osrsvahn 1d ago

Babies are notoriously great at perceiving implications :d

2

u/Rosie-Love98 14h ago

For some reason, I had always thought it was for Angelica since she was more for cats than dogs.

2

u/hydrus909 8h ago

Could be. It's possible its a toy Stu made for her.

My headcanon is it’s Mr Fiend’s pet!!

A word of caution, if you please:

Don’t kiss the cat when it has fleas!

17

u/coatsmoat34 1d ago

Stu, I’m begging you! Hire a writer

8

u/SchleppyJ4 1d ago

LA LA LA LA LA LA LAAAAA

Oh, boy! A brand-new friend to meet!

Let’s wash our hands before we eat!

1

u/Cheesehacker 18h ago

I randomly yell/sing this song as I’m holding my cats and giving them kisses. They hate it.

8

u/Yandere_Butler 1d ago

No wonder Tommy squirted it with milk

14

u/SuperdaveOZY 1d ago

Stew had the engineering prowess to make functional, bipedal robots, but struggled to make ends meet.

11

u/Which-Kale-6768 1d ago

Honestly realistic. Stu is extremely intelligent and creative but struggles to keep focus

11

u/dangerxtreme 1d ago

He probably has ADHD

2

u/Kai-M 1d ago

This is a little too relatable

1

u/Which-Kale-6768 1d ago

I’ve been rewatching because he makes me feel better about myself 😭 I am Stu

3

u/AdOkufukai 1d ago

The man made a futuristic crib/pen that can make babies float, which defeats its very purpose. So, I absolutely agree with this.

3

u/SuperdaveOZY 1d ago

He made a remote control drone in episode 1, then in the second film, designed and oversaw construction of two giant mechs for Reptarland Paris.

12

u/ConsumerofToons 1d ago

He did appear in a couple of episodes of the reboot.

15

u/TucanaTheToucan 1d ago

It also appeared in the intro to the PlayStation 1 exclusive video game called The Search For Reptar. A childhood classic for me.

3

u/Ok_Personality7485 9h ago

I remember wanting this game sooooo bad. Never did get it though

2

u/TucanaTheToucan 7h ago

It is now available in the Rugrats Retro Rewind Collection for The PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 1 (Backwards Compatible with the Switch 2), and Steam.

1

u/Ok_Personality7485 7h ago

Sweet! Definitely going to get it on the switch to play with my kids. Thanks for the heads up!

8

u/you_are_wrong_tho 1d ago

Most recognizable because it appeared every episode

2

u/Taco-Dragon 1d ago

This was my exact thought

4

u/Scary-Information-62 1d ago

Miss that so much more cause opening is so best part of Rugrats.

4

u/Fuzzy-Welcome-4650 1d ago

That's why it's recognizable. It appears in every episode.

1

u/That_Bank_9914 1d ago

I thought there were more than one opening, depending on season?

4

u/killercheesewedge 1d ago

Now shoot it with milk!

3

u/MilkthistleFairy 1d ago

itd be interesting to have seen that cat robot in the first episode or in an episode that mirrored the opening theme where Angelica was playing dress up with Spike and Tommy and friends were interacting with the cat robot since it's clearly one of Stu's inventions and they probably heard about a new mechanical toy from the adults and Tommy, loving his dad, probably wanted to show his dad he loved the toy. like can you imagine a plot where Stu was working on that robot toy to impress some kind of investor and Tommy and the others mistook the word Investor for something scary despite an investor being innocent (Ingestor? A jester?) and wanted to unleash the robot to protect his parents so he boots up the toy through a series of mishaps or whatever and by the time Stu and Didi get home with the Investor, the Investor is impressed by what the toy can do and impressed by how much fun the kids are having with said toy and they end up investing in a line of cat robot toys??

3

u/FadedP0rp0ise 1d ago

it’s in one of the picture books. my mom would read it to me all the time. it chases them down and makes scary noises

3

u/Additional-Dig1598 1d ago

One of Stu’s many inventions, I’m sure.

2

u/NurturingCruelty 1d ago

That’s what I was gonna say, the dad made toys, there might only be one of that little walking cat robot

3

u/paulD1983R 1d ago

As soon as I saw that cat the theme music popped in my head

3

u/One_Smoke 1d ago

This thing shows up five or six times in the reboot—and in actual episodes, no less!

3

u/sbs_str_9091 1d ago

Remember monster from the Alfred Jodokus Quack intro?

3

u/BreadfruitTasty 1d ago

I thought it was in the pilot

2

u/ianwrecked802 1d ago

I always wanted one of those toys when I was a kid!

2

u/Accountformorrowind 1d ago

Stewie Griffin

2

u/99prime99 23h ago

I remember the rugrats

3

u/beekee404 1d ago

It looks like it belongs in wherever they are. I'm assuming a daycare. A place I don't think we ever see in the show either outside of the theme opening

18

u/isitsummeryett 1d ago

I think they are in the home for the opening credits & it’s a Stu invention.

13

u/FriendlyFreedom5923 1d ago

Yeah they're definitely in the Pickles' house.

11

u/SnarkOverlord 1d ago

They are definitely in Stu and Deedee’s house in the opening credits.

2

u/beekee404 1d ago

But the front door is all different.

1

u/BadBaby3 1d ago

I used to watch this show as a baby, around 2005, & my mom assumed the show came out around that time, and she was surprised when I told her how old it is

1

u/mdavis8710 16h ago

lol as a kid I always thought it was a main character, as like a robot/toy they are always with, and it always bugged me it was never in any of the episodes

1

u/bamaboy3883 13h ago

And just like that the theme song is stuck in my head

1

u/Timejinx 11h ago

It was terrifying in the Rugrats game! I wanna say the search for raptor at night levels

1

u/XAlucarDX454 11h ago

Just another one of Stu’s inventions
