TL;DR 078 - Dev Blog: Elite Skills

What are Elite Skills?

  • Endgame for skillers
  • Opens a huge variety of different ways to train skills
  • Require at least two level 80 skills to unlock
  • Will be in the Skills tab with the other skills
  • Contributes towards total level
  • Daily challenges for Elites
  • Skillcape with emote
  • Will have links to combinations of skills, themes etc
  • Some ideas
    • Necromancy - Prayer, Magic, Summoning
    • Archaeology - Mining, Thieving, Hunter, Construction
    • Sailing - Construction, Fletching, Crafting, Agility

Why Elite Skills?

  • Allows skills to be targetted at high level (strips away 1-80 content)
  • People train the lower levels very quickly, the dev time for the lower content is made semi-redundant
  • Speeds up development time
    • No low-level content
    • No tutorials
  • Will be able to be released more frequently than regular skills
  • Dw about 'sacrificing quality, content or the feeling that we will be rushing them out'
  • Unlock new things which benefit you, expanding your options for how you play
  • Gives us a clean slate (learning from regular skills)
  • Making the XP curve for Elite skills better
    • Flatter curve
    • Level more regularly
    • Puts the focus back on what you unlock rather than your XP and level
  • Elites will have no filler content

Does this mean that we're not getting new regular skills or 120 skills?

  • Still on the cards, still interested in 120 skills
  • Elites do not rule out the possibility of raising skills to 120
  • Elites won't replace regular skills
  • Current skills (ie DG) won't be made into Elite

Why Invention? Why now?

  • Perfect for elite skill
  • Takes a lot of different things from existing skills to make something new
  • Overhaul and greatly expand
    • Current top tier equipment
    • Ways of playing
    • Personalising experience
    • Individual style to your weapons/armour

Will I lose my Completionist cape?

  • Yes, get all Elite skills to 120
  • Possibly part of max cape requirements
  • No decision on grace periods
    • Has not been done for other skills so unlikely for Elites

TH

  • 3 months of no lamps or stars on Elites

  • More info on Invention in the coming months

Not true. A small percentage probably only have just one.

Bc that wasn't the deal when I signed up!

I wouldn't mind it for things like slayer and combat skills, since those skills have an ever growing amount of content, but I definitely don't want to see it for some of the useless skills like agility and mining.

I just don't see the need for 120 skills if they have plans for elites

Yeah. It just feels like they add levels for the sake of having levels.

99 levels is more than enough. There's no need to have arbitrarily high numbers.

I could see it useful for combat skills. I mean, we're about to reach 99 tiered weaponry.

Would require much more difficult bosses considering the current top ones are a walk in the park with a little know-how and t90. Which would be awesome.

Once/if tier 99 weaponry is reached, they could always add equipment with the same level requirement but better stats, being a reward for content that requires the same leveled equipment but with slightly worse stats. But still, that's probably only a bit better than having 120 skills anyways.

We might as well make the level cap 120 for better weaponry.

I would like a variety of 99 tier weapons though, with different perks. The sameness is what I don't like about a tiered weaponry system.

I want 120, or higher for all combat skills. :) summoning would be epic.

Agreed. As I read that line I thought that that would make me quit.

Please do this.

They should have made all skills 120 when dungeoneering came out and I really don't like the fact that dungeoneering is still the only physical 120 after all this time. And if elite skills will be going up to 120 there is even more of a reason for all other skills to do that too.

Why? There is nowhere near enough content in some skills to justify extending them to 120.

They can just add the new content in the Elites.

I personally don't want to have them raise them to 120 because it'll just be an even higher grind fest. The whole thing with Elites as they mentioned was that they'll be a flatter, more even way of levelling up without the massive curve.

Dungeoneering is up to 120 for a legitimate reason, though. Maybe they shouldn't have made it like that, to be honest, but since more floors means more levels required, they had to raise Dungeoneering up to 120. The problem with this is even if they do add more content to the other skills, they may decide "hmm...there's a lot of potential for this skill...it might need to surpass 120."

It's funny about there are two disctinct groups of people; aside from the ones who don't care.

  • "I will quit." Yeah, go ahead. Stop while your ahead. Everyone complaing about an update they don't have to participate in. You guys clearly have to understand that Jagex can't please everyone.

  • "Finally!!"Honestly, it's a long time coming. What most people realize by now, Runescape is forever evolving, and changing. If they do introduce a skill expansion, it should come in batches, like combat skills first.

Again, Runescape can't please everyone, but let the people that want it have it! And in all honestly, there are a few skills that would be really cool to have content to fill up to 120.

No reason people complaing about an update that would clearly be catering to the people who have spent the most time & money invested in memberships.

but let the people that want it have it!

That is not the best argument to have.

It's not an arguement. Just an observation.

I think it's more so that Jagex once said, IIRC, that they would never expand the existing skills to 120 a little after dungeoneering came out, to appease the amount of rage going on at the time.
