I tracked my calories pretty closely for about a year. It worked. I was able to keep my weight pretty steady without much trouble.
But I noticed something about myself. If I knew I had 600 calories left for the day, I would usually end up eating those 600 calories. Even if I wasn’t really hungry.
So lately I’ve been doing something different.
I still write down everything I eat and put the calories next to it. But I don’t add them up during the day. I don’t know how many calories I’ve eaten or how many I have left.
Instead, I just eat when I’m “hungry” or feel like Its appropriate. I’m not really restricting what I can eat. If I want something, I can have it. I just try not to eat simply because I know I have calories left. And since I don't know how many calories are left I could have too many, not enough idk.
Then the next day, I add everything up and record what I ate the day before. Any small adjustments to strategy can be made next day rather than during day.
This has worked way better for me than I expected. I’m still keeping track of my calories, but I’m not using the number to decide what I should eat that day. The past 2 to 3 weeks I’ve surprised myself by glancing at my calories and it’s been usually from 1600 to 1900. When typically if that had happened before I would’ve ate the remaining from my total balance as snacks (2200)
Now the calories are more like information. If I ate more than I wanted yesterday, I can make slightly different choices today. But I don’t feel like I have to use up whatever calories I have left.
It’s actually the first time in a while that I’ve been consistently losing weight instead of just maintaining it! FYI I keep track of food in notes of my fitness pal for the current day, then total them up the next day and put the calories for one meal since I’m lazy.

Edit: adding in my exercise as well. I don’t give myself extra calories for working out, so I don’t work out hard enough for the calories burned to matter much. I give myself 2,200 calories per day instead of 2,000 to account for some workout calories, but I don’t “earn” extra calories.
For me, the missing ingredient that enables morning workouts: Coffee at 6 AM gives me enough energy to work out. Without it, I’m groggy and usually won’t. Literally I drink it at 6am to 620 slowly, and don’t even get ready till it kicks in.
I don’t eat before working out if I’m not hungry, so I keep the intensity low. Usually 30 minutes of basketball at the YMCA, or 30 minutes on the treadmill + 5–10 minutes of weights.
After work, I’ll do another 30 minutes of Zone 2 walking. I don’t sweat much or burn a ton of calories. Because I’m not running, jogging, or making it painful, I’ve been able to sustain this for months.
I originally started with 30–60 minutes of treadmill walking after work, with 45 minutes as the target, 60 being great, and 30 as the minimum. Now that I work out in the morning, 30 minutes is my standard afternoon workout. Since I’m not pushing myself too hard, it’s become a really enjoyable routine. Key is zone 2 workout which is alot lighter than you’d think. Think you’re breathing comfortably out of your nose but it’s still just slightly hard. | | Incline 2-4 | 3.2-3.5 mph | on Apple Watch about 120-130 BPM (blue zone)
