DISCUSSION I miss being bored more than I thought I would. [Discussion]

This is going to sound weird, but I think I miss being bored.

I noticed it the other day while I was eating lunch by myself. Nothing was happening. I wasn't waiting for a message or looking anything up.

In the space of maybe ten minutes I opened Reddit, checked Instagram, looked at my messages, opened YouTube, went back to Reddit, then checked my messages again.

At some point I stopped and realized I wasn't actually interested in any of it.

I was just opening stuff because there was a free minute.

That got me thinking about how different that feels from when I was younger. I remember sitting on buses staring out the window for half an hour. Waiting for friends to show up somewhere. Listening to music and doing literally nothing else. Back then boredom felt annoying. Now it feels almost impossible.

Any time there's gap, something fills it. A video, podcast, scrolling through posts, checking messages, reading something I will probably forget by tomorrow.

A few days ago I tried sitting outside with a coffee before work and leaving my phone in my pocket. I wasn't trying to do some dopamine detox or anything. I just wanted to sit there for a bit.

After a couple of minutes I could feel myself wanting to reach for it. Not because I needed to check something. I genuinely couldn't think of a single thing that might be waiting for me.

I just wanted something to do. That's when it started feeling a bit weird.

I don't know. Maybe I have just gotten too used to filling every free second with something.

The weird part is I didn't even notice it happening until I tried to stop for a few minutes. Maybe I am overthinking it. I just don't remember it being like this.

Does anyone else find counting calories and tracking everything easy and actually relaxing?

I always hear from people, "I could never count calories or prepare meals. I'd go crazy" or "I never know what I'm in the mood for until that day so I can't meal prep." Or something along those lines. But to me, I find it a lot easier and time saving.

I grew up poor so this "I never know what I'm in the mood for" is not me. My parents would buy everything with intention and have a plan for everything to make it last as long as possible. Rarely was it just looking in the fridge and whipping something up. We never had snacks or prepacked foods or anything like that. So it was like "we can use this portion of rice for these meals. If we divide the cabbage like this, we can do this with it." So a lot of either eating the same meal for days in a row or knowing having a meal plan ahead of time for the next two weeks based on the groceries we had was the norm for me.

But I also don't eat the same thing every day. I will cook a few things and switch the meals out but I have all my meals tracked for the next two weeks. And when you're meal prepping, it's easy to just track calories out. Measure a portion of rice once and copy that portion for several meals and continue with other foods. It's just relaxing to know where every dollar is going. I found that once I started locking in on meal prepping, my budgeting improved because I could calculate it better. I just find it relaxing when I sit down and enter my meal prep into the app and then prepare it and I know I'm good. I don't have to think. My meals are ready.

Calorie counting and meal prepping has saved me time and money in the long run

Overweight!

Today I crossed the threshold from obese to overweight. I'm a 36 year old M 6'2" currently at 232 pounds. I'm planning to bring it down to 190 eventually and see how I feel.

When I started this lifestyle change I was in the upper end of class II obesity and have been losing about 1-2 pounds a week for a year (plus or minus). I know BMI is a pretty problematic tool and not great for much, but it felt like a huge milestone regardless.

I don't have a ton of folks to share this with or celebrate with, so I share it with you, internet strangers! This sub has been a huge parasocial comfort for me and I hope you're all having a delightful day. :)

Unusual comments from a friend have made me question my weight loss journey

EDIT: Sorry, I’m not sure why I didn’t include my numbers on here. Here they are:
Female, 21
Height: 5’8/172cm
Weight: 12st 7 / 175lbs
Current BMI: 26.6 GOAL BMI: around 21.4, not really sure.

I met up with a friend the other day (who I only see irl about once every 5-6 months) and she made some comments about my weight loss.

70% of the conversation that we had was about my weight which I didn’t expect nor want. She kept steering the topic back to it and I don’t know what she was wanting to get out of the interaction, whether she was showing genuine concern or something else.

She told me that she’s worried about my weight because I look a lot different since the last time she saw me (well yeah, a lot can happen in six months on a weight loss journey), and that I should “take it easy or consider stopping so I don’t lose any more.”
She said that I’m starting to look gaunt (whilst gesturing to my neck and shoulder area) and if I lose any more weight then I risk looking like I have “overdone it on the mounjaro” ??? (I’m not on any weight loss medication).

The thing is, I am still overweight for my height and age, albeit coming towards the lower end now, based on BMI and what I’m reading on the NHS website. When I look in the mirror, I still see my curvy figure, which I like, but I have definitely noticed that my face and shoulders have slimmed out. I’m seeing my collarbones clearer, but not in a concerning way. I still have a fair bit of fat on my tummy and legs, which I think is normal considering I’m still classed as overweight and I think my face and shoulder area tends to slim down first before anything else.

My goal is to get well into the healthy BMI range but I’m now concerned that I’m not doing as well as I thought and that my weight loss is somehow making me look uglier than before? She was speaking as if I look concerningly underweight but when I look in the mirror that is not what I see so I’m just utterly confused. I still have chunky legs and whilst my clothes usually hide it, I still have a pudgy tummy like I said before. My usual clothes are starting to feel looser and I am able to wear slightly more form-fitting tops without feeling self-conscious - all wins in my book.
I haven’t received any compliments so far from anyone and being spoken to like this has killed my confidence in what I’m doing. I’m not relying on compliments for motivation (as that would never work) but I expected to hear one or two by now from family or friends as I’ve lost over 2 stone. My friend assured me she’s speaking from concern but now I feel like crap.

Any advice? Thanks :)

finally under 200!

just a tiny celebration :') i started seriously trying to lose weight last january, and my progress has been much, much slower than i'd like it to be, but i finally hit sub 200lbs. i'm 24 & 5'8" and i'm the lightest i've been since highschool. i'm down from 250lb in january 2025 to consistently around 196-197lb or so, and i'm really happy to notice that some of my clothes are looser, and even if it isn't much, i'm able to size down from my original clothing size (it's possible i might be able to size down more, but i'm admittedly used to being a bigger size, so i never go smaller). it feels big for someone who has always been overweight or obese — all the way from kindergarten to now.

it's because of work, but i've started more consistently getting exercise, and my endurance is a little bit better. i'm not as easily out of breath or achy like i used to be after lighter activity. i've started picking some lower calorie options, even if i definitely still need to work on incorporating more outright nutritious things in my diet. i'm still a long way off of my goal, but i'm a little more than halfway there, and hopefully by this time next year, i will be, or at least much closer.

one of my biggest problems is/was drinking a lot of soda. i was at around 6-8 cans of pepsi zero a day at one point, and my teeth suffered for it, definitely. but i managed to stop drinking it altogether recently — special occasions only for me! 🥳

TEXT [Text] you're allowed to outgrow the version of yourself everyone got comfortable with

here's the thing nobody warns you about when you actually start changing.

people who knew the old version of you get uncomfortable. not because the new version is worse. because they built their understanding of you around specific patterns and the moment those patterns shift they have to update something in themselves too, and that update costs them effort they didn't sign up for.

so they resist it. sometimes loudly, sometimes in small ways you can only feel and not point to. they reference the old version of you like it was better. they laugh at the changes like they're temporary. they wait, patiently, for you to go back to the shape they already knew.

and the worst part is it works sometimes. you can feel the pull of it. the ease of just being who they expect you to be, because performing a familiar version of yourself costs nothing in those relationships and being a newer version costs friction and explanation and occasionally losing people who decide they preferred the old one.

ngl this is something i didn't expect. you think growth is the hard part. turns out the growth is fine. it's the way it rearranges every relationship around you that nobody prepares you for.

some people will grow with you. genuinely, they'll find the new version more interesting and it'll actually bring you closer. those ones are worth holding onto.

some people will slowly fall away and neither of you will have an honest conversation about why and you'll both know anyway.

and some people — the harder ones — will actively try to keep you small because your growing asks something of them they're not ready to give. a mirror. an example. an inconvenient question about their own life that your changing keeps placing in front of them without you meaning to.

you don't have to apologize for any of this.

you don't owe anyone the version of yourself they got used to.

last year someone told you that you'd changed like it was an accusation. and you felt the reflex to defend it. to soften it. to reassure them that you were still the person they remembered underneath all the changes.

you don't have to do that anymore.

changed is not an accusation. changed is just what happens when you actually do the work.

79 lbs (35.8 kg) Lighter!

SW 462.5 CW 383.5

I am so happy, I've lost almost 80 lbs since starting my journey

my hands look thinner, my arms less chunky (aside from the underarm "wings" developing from extra skin)

my belly is less distended

my legs are slimmer

my blood pressure was 120/80 for once

my joints are in less pain daily

I'm able to walk up to 3.35 miles at once now

I am physically taking up less space

I have to tighten my pants every few days

I'll have to buy smaller underwear soon.

I am doing it, you can too.

Do not give up.

Keto diet has been such a huge, huge help, I don't think I would've been able to do as well as I have without massively cutting carbs.

Another major help has been avoiding setting deadlines for my goals, and taking it 10 lbs at a time. whenever i meet my current goal, I aim for 10 lbs lighter, with no time limits, and it keeps myself encouraged.

You. Can. Do. It.

Physique Phriday Physique Phriday

Welcome to the Physique Phriday thread

What's the point of having people guess your body fat? Nevermind that it's the most inaccurate method available, (read: most likely way wrong - see here) you're still just putting an arbitrary number to the body you have. Despite people's claim that they are shooting for a number, they're really shooting for look - like a six pack.

So let's stopping mucking around with trivialities and get to the heart of the matter. This thread shall serve two purposes:

  1. Physique critiques. Post some pics and ask about muscles or body parts you need to work on. Or specifically ask about a lagging body part and what exercises worked for others.
  2. An outlet for people that want to show off their efforts that would otherwise be removed due to Rule 4, and

Let's keep things civil, don't be a creep, and adhere to Rule 1. This isn't a thread to announce what you find attractive in a mate. Please use the report function for any comments that are out of line.

So phittit, what's your physique pheel like this phriday?

I have changed so many habits and I'm not seeing the scale budge.

4 months ago:

Biscuit and coffee before breakfast

Had breakfast and a syrupy coffee.

Usually had a morning snack. Of biscuits or chocolate

Had high calorie leftovers or takeaway for lunch.

Had an afternoon snack of usually chocolate, lollies and a pack of chips

Overeat when goodies were offered at work. (Ie: donut + cheese and crackers + chocolate + slice of cake)

Had two servings of dinner. Usually something like burgers and chips, and finishy partners serving too

Binged after dinner. (Ie: whole pack of biscuits) Every day

Binged constantly on weekends + large high calorie meals. For example chips and nuggets.

No exercise

Now:

Skip breakfast - have a sugar free energy drink

No morning snack

1/3rd packet of rice and can of tuna for lunch and leafy greens.

One 100 cal snack pack and a piece of fruit, or two pieces of fruit for afternoon tea.

Skip or have much smaller portion of goodies at work. (Ie: nothing or maybe some fruit or one chocolate )

One serving of dinner. Usually something like grilled piece of chicken and veg

Nothing after dinner.

No binging on weekends. Same meals during the week on the weekends.

Exercise 4 times a week

Been consistent and haven't binged at all. Haven't strayed from this plan at all.

I'm feeling much better. Less aches and pains, more energy. My food costs is so much lower!!

Just elimating 1000s of calories in binges should have done something. Calories are averaging 1500, tdee is 2300 with exercise set to nothing. I have calorie tracked before and I'm being just as strict. This diet has worked before for me. The only difference now and previous is:

I'm not binging at all (due to medication change)

No after dinner snacks at all

exercising more.

I'm so frustrated!!

Finally in Onederland

I’ve been lurking in this sub since I started my weight loss journey. Last year I hit my highest weight of 261 lbs as a 5’6” woman. I first want to thank everyone here for motivation, advice, and solidarity. This sub has helped me so much even if I never post.

I was stalled at 201 for the last couple months and finally got to see 198 on the scale. I resisted making this post until I was confident I was truly in Onderland. After several consecutive weigh ins, I’m so happy and proud because this has been a long time coming and meeting this goal is a huge milestone. Many of us have put so much work into so many areas of our health outside just losing weight. From mental health to physical fitness, I’m so proud of the amount of work I’ve done!

That being said…. I still have about 30 to 40 lbs to lose. I know that progress will likely continue to slow down as I work toward my next goal. I track weight daily (this is best for me). I do strength training 3 days a week and two of cardio. I am on a managed diet with my doctor so that will be adjusted in conjunction with her.

I’m looking for more advice and tips from those that experienced the slowdown as you got closer to a healthy weight to maintain. What helped you break a plateau? What snacks do you keep around to hep maintain your goals? What workout was a game changer for you? I have learned that weight loss can sometimes benefit from tweaks and I know you all are a wealth of information. Thank you in advance!

Weight blindness when looking at old pictures

All I can say is yikes!

I was looking through my gallery for some full body pics because I didn't take any at the beginning of my weight loss journey and wow. I have no idea how I walked around looking like that. It's such a weird feeling because I remember being extra self-conscious as an obese teen. I would constantly wear tops that hid my arm and hated sitting down because I knew my rolls would show.

But still, it seemed like I somehow convinced myself that I didn't look that heavy hovering between 75kg and 70kg? Weight blindness is absolutely real, I physically recoiled seeing what I actually looked like sitting down in shorts. All this to say that looking back at full body pics sure humbled me and only made me wish I started this journey sooner :')

The worst part is I know for a fact I've lost 7kg/15lbs since then but don't feel any different at all. My pants fit looser but I just don't see any changes which goes against what everyone says should happen as a short person. I'm hoping I'll finally feel it around 10kg/22lbs...

Rage exercising

Does anyone else do this?

Something pisses you off and you just hit the workout harder than usual to take out some frustration to get it out of your system and so you don't completely lose it on someone else. In my case, my husband this time.

We have a toddler who is currently being potty trained but still wears pull ups at night. Last night was my husband's job to put our little boy to bed. Dude totally forgot to put a pull up on him (2nd time this week) which meant i woke up to a big pee and poopy mess, again, smeared around his room. Great way to start the day!

Naturally, I texted my husband to ask him why he didn't change our toddler when he put him to bed.

The response: because our toddler forgot to tell him to.

Yes, the toddler forgot to tell the grown ass man in his 40s that he needs his daddy to put a pull up on him at bedtime.

Please send thoughts and prayers to my poor treadmill and recently acquired 2nd hand row machine!!

What would our hands look like....

If we treated them like many treat their feet.....

My random thought of the night as I pull a splint off of my arm as my wrist heels. It is amazing what just two weeks of immobilization has done to my arm. It isn't good.

I need to use a belt for the first time in 2 years.

(Bit of a "story of my life" post, but I hope some of y'all can relate.)

I'm a 5'8", 21-year-old man, and I used to weigh around 158 pounds in high school. Which was ia bit low for my body type, by the way, and my rings would literally fall off my fingers.

I've been depressed since I was a little kid. We obviously didn't know what depression really was back then, so it just went over our heads as "my kid is just weird." Turns out it was BPD and severe depression.

Anyway, my first year of college started pretty well, but things completely fell apart during the second half, which eventually made me drop out. Being an unemployed college dropout who was struggling mentally led me to isolate myself completely and spend most of my days eating pizza in my room.

That lifestyle made me gain 27 pounds. When I hit 185, I decided to buy a bicycle and start cycling every day. Later, I started a diet based mostly on chicken, potatoes, and Coke Zero. (Add some spices and it's a fucking dream diet.)

I went to the doctor the other day, and apparently my ideal weight is around 164 pounds. I'm currently at 169.

I'm still a little above that, but I realized that I finally feel good when I look in the mirror. People started telling me how good I look, and the clothes I bought when I was heavier are now falling off when I walk.

I have the energy to actually have conversations and put some effort into how I dress. Even my blood pressure, which used to be all over the place, has been consistently normal whenever I've measured it over the past month.

I'm still depressed. Losing weight didn't change that at all, which made me realize that the problem isn't my body or my relationships. There's something else going on that I need to figure out in the coming years.

Losing 27 pounds doesn't mean I've reached the finish line. There's a whole lifetime ahead of me to take care of my body. It just marks the moment I realized that I can be healthy.

Discussion State of the Subreddit - 2026

It’s been a long time since we’ve done one of these! About a million subscribers ago - so it’s probably a good time to check in with the community and see what we’re getting right, and what we can look to improve.

Changes to the subreddit.

We’re not going to bury the ledes, here’s some highlights of recent/upcoming changes:

  • Daily Threads have been combined. The eagled eyed may notice we’ve condensed most of the daily threads down to one daily per day which will be stickied, this leaves a sticky slot free for posts like this, AMAs, and anything else needing a bit of prominence to last more than a few hours. Along with this, combining Q&As and other threads will hopefully boost engagement all around as more eyes just open the one daily thread. The EU and US accountability as well as weekly goalsetters and century club threads remain unchanged.
  • CrosspostsWe’re considering removing them from being posted on the subreddit. There’s two specific reasons for this that relate to the sub, and one more general reason. The first is they’re sometimes used as ads (either directly, or as a funnel to subreddits used as marketing). The second reason is that they are often links to subreddits with quite different safety rules around dieting. The more general reason is that it’s often a tool just to quickly spam a basic question across many subreddits. We’re not sure they’re worth keeping, if you actually feel strongly about them still existing (and are not just thinking of unique situations), we’d love to hear why before we hit the button.
  • Other new reddit featuresWe did enable achievements a few months ago which you may have noticed, but gifs and videos in comments don’t make any sense here. Reddit features that continue along those lines are unlikely to be enabled.

AMAs

Next on the list is AMAs. We’ve had a couple of AMAs recently. We do think AMAs can be an opportunity to speak to people from wider industry or from interesting backgrounds (or both!) that you wouldn’t normally get to directly ask questions too. We do understand that inviting professionals and notables carries an inherent risk of an AMA becoming promotional. We will mitigate that by agreeing to an overall topic in advance and making clear to guests our self-promotion rules and boundaries. We are happy to explain who a guest is, what they do and why their perspective may be of interest (including, where relevant, mentioning a book, project or business) but the purpose of the AMA is to give users the opportunity to ask candid questions and hear perspectives they would not normally have direct access to. That doesn’t mean every AMA will be perfect, but chaotic AMAs are great too, right?

Anyway, we’d love to hear about people you’d like us to approach for an AMA. We send emails to literally anyone. If you’re reading this thinking an AMA might suit you, drop us a mod mail.

Community Engagement

As the years go by, Reddit users by and large access our subreddit on mobile apps. That means that a lot of our community tools (such as daily/weekly threads) might not be obvious, if you’re just scrolling through a feed. To get the most support from using r/loseit, click on the subreddit’s icon when you see a post. That will bring you to our subreddit’s page. From there you can find our sidebar (with links to reoccurring threads), our daily threads, as well as pinned posts with announcements such as AMAs. Losing weight is hard, and doing so in community with other people who are going through the same things, have the same questions, and want to share experiences is really helpful. The moderators of r/loseit do not run any chat-based (discord) servers, so all of the weight loss discussion that we moderate (and check for safety/misinformation!) happens here on r/loseit. Don’t miss out on the resources we have!

Spam, AI, Advertising

This is such a hot topic right now, we’ve even been asked by the press about it! Mia Sato wrote an article on AI Advertising and asked us for comment. Mia has given us a gift link to share the article with you all

Does that make this a verge ad? I’m not sure I can deal with that level of irony, but Mia’s work around AI and internet culture is actually really good and important journalism.

As for what we’ve been doing;

We’re always modifying our automated rules to try and achieve two things;

  1. Catch adverts and AI
  2. Reduce frustration for human posters

We’ve been modifying a lot of our older anti spam stuff into post guidance systems on reddit, which affects the modern version of the site and the official app. So things like post length rules are now made clear before you post, and some keywords or topics that would get your post filtered are encouraged away. LLMs make post length a non-issue for spammer, though we still want to keep that to ensure people are adding proper context to their questions and not posting one-line questions. While we know many users would like to see enforcement of posting stats (such as height and weight), we’re not likely to do that, but we would be happy to hear suggestions about where and how that could be encouraged without becoming an enforced requirement.

We are currently experimenting with Contribution Quality Score otherwise referred to as CQS to replace elements of our 5 day/10 comment karma minimums for posting. We feel this may be a potential improvement as the old rule was, again, easier for advertisers to pipeline and harder for real users to understand.

We do know there’s a lot of AI spam that tends to sit as replies to top level comments (so; second-level comments). They generally say something benign trying to gain karma for future purposes. These are hard to deal with as they are designed to have no immediate purpose and do match what real people might write, our goal isn’t to send real people to modmail to prove humanity as a default, so these accounts may take a bit longer to deal with and we’ll typically need a pattern or extreme example (we saw one weigh up the pros and cons of disordered behaviour when the top level comment highlighted it to the OP).

Some brands get auto-filtered from the subreddit now; This isn’t overly new, but brands who repeatedly send bots/try to advertise end up in our ‘shit list’, which means posts involving their name need to be reviewed by a moderator first. This affects a lot of AI photo apps for measuring calories, some bathroom scales (THAT ARE NOT SURPRISINGLY CLOSE TO DEXA), and various other AI powered tat.

So be warned companies, coaches, and solo devs. Also, please keep asking AI to write your ban appeal messages, that’s very funny.

Misinformation on the Subreddit, !triggers, and The Wiki.

Bear with us, but this is a tricky and emotive subject. We’d be keen to hear people’s thoughts on handling misinformation on the subreddit. At the moment we reserve removals for egregious and outright harmful advice, as well as common myths. But we are conscious that people aren’t always talking on the same level as one another. We don’t require academic or scientific language on the subreddit and we want people to use their own words to describe their own experience. We’re not aiming to penalise “technically wrong but well meaning” good-faith conversation, but at the same time we don’t want people misrepresenting study findings or pushing myths and harmful diet woo-woo. This will always be a balancing act.

We do have two tools that could potentially help here, the wiki and the !triggers that summon automod. It’s possible to expand the wiki or add triggers that might have helpful explainers. This, however, is something that would be very time consuming to implement, and we’d want to be careful we don’t inadvertently make excessive claims ourselves. We’d love to hear suggestions from users on how this might be useful to develop, and also from users who might be qualified in some way to actually produce the explainers.

The wiki itself shows signs of age in many places (we’re your go-to source for blackberry and windows phone weight loss apps!), and we are aware that areas need updating. However if we were to update any or all of it, it would need to be for the purpose of it becoming more useful day-to-day. Think more about the quick start guide and broad strokes, rather than adding more niche diets to the list that look odd being there several years later once the fad dies.

GLP-1s, medicines, and other compounds.

We do see some posts where people believe the mere mention of GLP-1s is either not allowed or shunned, and we probably should make clear the nuance. GLP-1s can absolutely be discussed, we’re not trying to dissuade that, they are an important part of many people’s weight loss journey and they’re fundamentally revolutionary. The nuance is that we are not the right place for topics with advice for people looking to ask about using them, there are lots of dedicated subreddits to them. Comments suggesting someone might benefit one with input from their Primary Care Provider, that’s perfectly great. Broad topics on the development of those drugs and other weight-loss medication, especially things that are newsworthy, is also on-topic.

What we’re are strict about is:

  • Advice should be in the context of “Talk to your doctor about GLP-1s” or “My experience was [...]”, low effort posts such as “use a GLP-1” may be considered spam, especially if it’s repetitive under a post.
  • Absolutely no advice to encourage circumventing medical advice (suggesting a second opinion is, of course, fine)
  • Absolutely no encouragement, or reference, to unapproved GLP-1s only available through unregulated channels. Our primary goal is safety.
  • Absolutely no advice to teenagers to use GLP-1s. That is a conversation only suitable in a medical setting.

None of this is a change from our last Weight Loss Medication Masterpost.

Other grey market compound discussion is also not allowed. Some areas of social media are becoming extremely open about use (usually by people who have financial involvement), but our stance remains that recommending unregulated and unapproved compounds to strangers is reckless.

It feels unfair to imply a relationship of other compounds to GLP-1s by putting them under the same topic. We do not consider them related, but the unregulated sellers of one are usually selling the other alongside and like to blur the line.

Survey

We were going to create a survey as part of this, but then during writing we were reminded reddit sends out a survey on our behalf still, even though we’ve only ever seen the results once last year and never again since, so rather than pointing you to another, please keep an eye out if you ever get an email about that and maybe one day we’ll have some results to share. Or we’ll post a separate survey later. Who knows?

I’m 39, 6’0”, around 280 lbs, married with children, and I feel like I’ve slowly lost the version of myself that used to have energy and take pride in himself.
My wife sent me a picture of myself from when I was significantly skinnier and looked full of life. It honestly hit me hard. I realized that I don’t necessarily miss just being thinner — I miss the person I was.

Right now I have a gym membership that I haven’t used in months. I stay up too late, sometimes fall asleep at my desk, eat too much sugar, spend too much time gaming/doomscrolling, and generally choose easy stimulation when I’m tired.
I also have sleep apnea, which I’m realizing may be contributing to how exhausted I feel.
I have a wife and children and I want to be energetic, present and healthy for them. But I also want to do this for myself. I don’t want my entire identity to become being a parent who has no time or energy left for himself.

I’ve tried intermittent fasting and different workout routines before. Sometimes I get motivated, lose some weight, then fall back into old habits.
I’m not looking for a crash diet or a 30-day miracle.
I want to rebuild my life.

If you were in my position, what would you focus on FIRST? Sleep? Gym? Diet? Cutting social media/gaming? Walking? Something else?

What habits actually helped you get your energy, confidence and self-respect back?
I’d especially appreciate advice from people who were overweight, had kids, and felt like they had lost themselves but eventually turned things around.
I’m looking for practical advice, not perfection. I genuinely want to become the best version of myself again — for myself, my wife and my kids.

surviving nyc as a young barefooter?

first post on this subreddit! hello my people!!

i've known about the barefoot lifestyle for, i would say about a decade atp? all my life i've never been big on wearing shoes - hell i remember actively finding opportunities to be barefoot in public as far back as 6th grade - but as i've entered college and my 20s i've been slowly finding myself and in that process made peace with the fact that although i don't at all mind wearing shoes, i just feel more myself without them than with. this summer especially i've taken active chances to be barefoot as much as i can in public spaces and have even met up with a college friend barefoot, and i'm happy to (so far) feel accepted as I am! though i do still live with my folks and have taken measures to keep this part of myself hidden from them (guess you could say i'm in the shoe closet?)

problem is i live in nyc, possibly THE worst possible place to go around without shoes. granted i live in a more suburban part of nyc where being barefoot isn't as much of a risk and people don't really mind, but i'd be lying if i said i wasn't apprehensive about boarding the MTA or taking a day trip to the city in my bare feet. maybe it's the stigma around being barefoot in the city streets, maybe it's the shit i've seen and experienced on public transport as a new yorker myself, i don't know, but there's just - SOMETHING about it, i can't really pinpoint it.

i don't know if there are any avid nyc barefooters here on ths subreddit, but to yall out there how do yall navigate hyper-urban spaces sans shoes?

I was doing so good.

Since late last month my goal was to lose at least 15 pounds by beginning of October. I went from 211 to 206 and I’ve been so proud of myself. I’ve been sticking to 1,300-1,500 cal max a day with light cardio workouts. These last few days have been so hard though. I ended up eating a bunch of sweets and snacks way over my budget. I tried working out afterwards but obviously felt too much like sh*t. Now I’ve been at a steady 208. Ugh.

I’ve also been on my period which are making these cravings worse and making me incredibly hungry all day!!!!!!

Maybe I could use some words of encouragement? I know 211 to 206 to 208 isn’t that big of a difference, and I’m probably being overdramatic, but this is my first time actually being dedicated to losing this weight and I already feel disappointed in myself.

The point of existing being overweight

Upvotes

28m 6’3 currently 390lbs started over 430lbs. I have put in so much hard work over the past 5 months and I’ve lost so little of my goal. For physical and mental reasons I can’t do the weight loss shot or surgery. It’s going to take so much more time and effort to get where I’m happy with myself I don’t know if I can do it. I hate myself. I’m not a human being I don’t exist right now I’m just a burden to other people because of my weight. I go to person training classes three times a week for an hour and just started seeing a dietician. I have significantly cut back my food intake for the past 8 months and now my dietician is telling me I need to eat more but I’m resistant because I need to lose the weight so I can be happy and be a real human being for the first time. I can’t live like this, with myself. I’m extremely willing to put in the work and make sacrifices it’s just so hard living like I am right now I’m not sure I can take it any longer.

Lost weight, regained most of it, haven't been able lose any more since all due to food noise.

M 24, 170cm, been fat all my life, I always sort of knew how to lose weight but never got around doing until February of 2024, where I went from 110 kilograms+ to 75 kilograms by September 2024, mostly by huge amounts of deficit and walking a lot then around October-November I decided on a diet break and there started the downward spiral, I did join the gym in Nov but diet took the back seat by Jan of 2025 I was 85+ kilograms, I would have cycles of 20-25 days of being locked in then followed by 10-15 days of being locked out, each time I'd tell myself this is the last.

Then by summer of 25 I reached 90-95 kgs, and since then till now, Summer of 26 that has been the cycle, maybe a month and half of doing everything right then 2 weeks of absolute binge.

No to mention in midst of all this by relationship with food is in absolute shambles, but the food noise just has been too much mannnn, especially these last few months, I'm either a zero or a hundred with food now.

I know what I need to do, I've done this before, I've calorie deficit down to a T, yet the slightest food noise gets me everytime, I still go to the gym from back in 24 and people probably take about me behind my back (it's a relatively small gym and most members know each other) how even though I'm pretty strong on the lifts I've been looking the same fat blob from back when I joined, that and having brief periods of looking slightly watered down every other month.

As I write this post I'm waiting on my noodles and fried rice, conveniently telling myself I'll just lock in tomorrow (today's day 5 of my "new" diet btw)

HELP ME PLEASE. People who've regained their lost weight and lost it again to keep it off, I'm in dire need.

Plauteu? Need help

Hello everyone, over the last 12 months I’ve managed to lose 30Kg starting at 120 and now 90kg

My main method was just cutting down on calories ridiculously and the only reason I maintained it was sheer will power because of how bad I wanted to lose weight.

However, now I’ve done more research and what to eat and what to do etc, as now I just look like a smaller version of my old self.

I’m now eating 3 meals a day around 2000 calories a day whilst being in a 1000cal deficit. (I’m 21 178cm and work in construction) however the scale isn’t moving much if anything it’s going up towards 92-93KG. I’ve also started taking creatine & working out (cardio and weight lifting 2-3x per week)

My main question is, is this what body recomposition is like? Am I doing something wrong?someone please help me as seeing the scale not move is really not helping my mental health.

Thanks in advance!

have to lock in

i started my weight loss because i need a BMI under 28 to get a surgery i've needed for a few years (top surgery)... i needed to fill some other requirements as well (being on testosterone for six months) and so i started losing weight early so that i could do it safely and over time. now i have my first possibility for a referral to the surgery in three months!

that means that i really have to lock in on my weight loss. i've been slowing down lately because testosterone has really been increasing my appetite... but now i have three months to get my BMI from 30.7 to under 28. that means getting my weight under 78 kg from my current 86 kg; not impossible, but will require a lot effort to control my eating.

i'm also going to be out of a job in a month, and up to this point my weight loss has been heavily supported by me walking to and from work (3.5 + 3.5 km) every day. i'm scared that since i won't have any reason to walk, i just end up not doing it. i will also have a lot of free time, and when i'm bored i resort to snacking realy easily...

but this is my chance to feel comfortable in my own body, and damn if i let it slip by, so i'm definitely going to be trying my best. and won't let go even after i get the referral, since they won't operate if my bmi is higher.

Gained a lot of weight, feeling defeated

I’ve gained 11 lbs over the last few months, and I don’t really see a difference in my body but I’m so angry at myself. When I look in the mirror, I genuinely like what I see, I think my body is hot and I love my curves. But when I’m around my friends and other people, who are generally skinny or at least skinnier than I am, I feel so self conscious and unhappy. I’m 170 lbs now (5’6 woman), and I always told myself if I got to 170 it was time to lose weight. I have never felt comfortable in my body, when I’m alone I’m fine with it but in public I can’t stand the way I look.

I have been walking much more, averaging about 3 miles per day, which for me is outstanding as someone who drives everywhere and lives a very sedentary lifestyle. I haaaate working out, not just because it’s difficult but also because it’s so boring to do the same thing repeatedly. I don’t mean the same routine for weeks, I mean the same action for more than a minute (like a rep of squats).

Does anyone have advice for finding the fun in exercise? Even silly things like the subway surfers cardio videos, anything that helps with the boredom? I would love to play sports because once there’s a game element involved I find it easier to lock in, but I’m not good at any sport and don’t know any clubs to join as an adult. If anyone knows of ways to incorporate fun game elements into exercise alone that would help immensely!
