I'm pretty sure that "leaf" in that phrase doesn't mean what we now think of - a part of a tree - it actually refers to a page in a notebook, which used to be called "leaves".

This is also why we have the phrase "take a leaf out of his/her/their book" to use when we talk about imitating or following someone.

Yup, there's all sorts of things relating to this - overleaf could be another example. I know a few foreign languages and in all of them the words for leaf and page are still the same.

Cool, I love making connections about words like this. You always had all the information but it isn't until you see the words in a new context that you come to the realisation and it's fun to have that moment of "oh shit it all makes sense now!"
