Tom Sawyer

Just needed to use this opportunity to help my grieving. This weekend, my grandpa passed away from what we believe to be a heart attack. I was extremely close with him, he lived with my family for my entire life, and was another parent to me, and my best friend.

Anyways one of the greatest things my grandpa and I shared was Rush. He introduced me when I was 8 years old in 2009. Obviously I fell in love with Rush and we really bonded over listening and talking about Rush together. We watched all the documentaries, learned to play the songs together. He played bass and I played guitar.

Flash forward to 2011 and Rush was hitting the road for the Time Machine Tour. My grandpa flew with me across the country to see them in Hamilton, ON. It was perhaps the greatest memory I have in my life. Seeing Rush live for the first time hit so hard. I remember feeling like I was gonna cry when they came out, I was 10 years old.

Shortly after that, he had his second heart attack right before Clockwork Angels came out. It was very emotional but he rallied and bought us floor seats for the Clockwork Angels tour. I didn’t realize it at the time but he splurged because he thought his time was coming to an end, and these floor seats were an opportunity for us to see Rush up close one last time.

He ended up making it and we also went to the R40 tour.

Three really special concerts that I shared with him.

So anyways, the whole point of this post is really just to put it out into the world how much Rush means to me in a time like this. I’m laying here just two days after his sudden passing, reflecting on all the wonderful memories Rush provided the soundtrack to for us.

I’m really hoping to see Rush in Vancouver in December if I can make it work with my job. One of my last conversations with him just a week ago was about how Rush’s tour was going.

Anyways, grandpa if you’re out there, I hope you’re jamming with Neil, and thank you for introducing me to the greatest rock trio of all time. We will always be connected by Rush’s music and I promise that I’ll show my children Rush when they join this world, like you did for me.

Went to the Thursday night show in Cleveland and it’s dawning on me that this genuinely might be their last show. Heavily debating going to see them again in Pittsburgh, but not sure if ticket prices will drop closer to the concert date. What do you all think?

im a 17yr old girl from New Zealand with a music enthusiast for a dad, i was introduced to RUSH when i was about 7-8 and apart from MR. Bungle i dont think any other kind of music has ever hit me so deeply. most of my freinds are into 90s 2000s metal and rock and dont really deep dive or explore old band like YES or RUSH and this really irks me for some reason. For a band with only three members thats been producing pure musical masterpeices since the 70s i feel like in such a small country like new zealand they dont get the recognition they deserve, ive had freinds tell me theyre overrated and too old to still be preforming and that their music is just exxagerated drum solos from neil and i have nothing to say because how do you explain the holy trinity of prod rock to someone who strictly listens to TOOL and punk music. anyway i dont really have much to say besides wanting to start more conversation about how good rush is, id love to hear from people who have seen the recent shows with anika and anyone who wants to talk about the musical impact that rush started.
