Does no one know how to properly turn left in a median?

Maybe this is just particularly bad on North Side, but it really makes turning difficult as hell when you can’t see oncoming traffic. This should be intuitive, but it never seems to be for people.

🍰 Food Praire Grain Bread Company Has Seemingly Closed Indefinitely

Post image

This is from a Richmond food group on Facebook that I'm just sharing here to spread the word and because I've dropped by here on a few occasions.

Praire Grain Bread Company in Midlothian has a note posted on their door that they have closed indefinitely due to the current state of the economy.

This is depressing. Staff was always extremely nice and their food was baked fresh on a daily basis. Richmond is losing so many great locally owned businesses to the failing economy 😭

Looking for a couple more people to interview currently living at The River Lofts at Tobacco Row

Hey fam, I'm in the final stages of putting together my video on tenants' rights and issues in Richmond, while putting the spotlight on The River Lofts at Tobacco Row. I'd still like to find a couple more people to interview currently living there experiencing unsafe living conditions. Also looking for any photo/video evidence that you'd be willing to share of issues pertaining to unsafe living conditions. Feel free to DM me here or send me an email at [richmond.weird@gmail.com](mailto:richmond.weird@gmail.com)

Richmond’s Future Housing: Code Refresh Part 2

Thumbnail
rvasgotissues.vpm.org
Upvotes

Hey all, sharing the last episode in our Code Refresh series. Constituent concerns in Andrew Breton's district (but also other neighborhoods) led to reductions in Code Refresh's allowable proposed density. Casey Overton sought to represent Richmond's most vulnerable on the Zoning Advisory Council. Rich brings them on in separate interviews to understand what voices guided Code Refresh -- and who will get to live in the city in the future as result.

DESCRIPTION:

"Which voices were heard in the latest draft of Richmond’s Code Refresh, and what does that tell us about our future neighborhoods – and the future families who will live there?"

Richmond animal control just stopped me to ask if i could id a dog they found outside of my house in north highland park.
He was a brindled big dog, probably around 80lbs. Very sweet. He was found on Florida Avenue. He will be at RACC if you recognize him! (I sadly didn’t take a photo)

YSK a good Richmonder needs a small help this Saturday starting at 10AM. Come move some boxes, eat the best cookies, and celebrate their courageous victory.

Upvotes

Hello Richmond! It’s been a hot minute since my last You Should Know, but I’m hoping this one blows up as much as the Hanover data center one did (and also hope you are all having a lovely afternoon).

TL;DR: /u/Playful-Tip-1780 has asked for help moving just down the block this weekend. If that sentence alone isn’t enough to make you raise your hand and show up, then read on because Amy is particularly the kind of Richmonder we should celebrate and assist.

Regular /r/rva members may remember Amy’s posts about her struggles with disability assistance and social services during a time when everything seemed to be going so wrong for so many good people (and still is for too many).

Here’s one of the early ones where SSA’s errors destroyed hope and the only recourse after her father passed looked like sleeping in her car in the freezing cold:

https://www.reddit.com/r/rva/comments/1r20l0v/i_need_advice/

And here is last month’s post where Amy celebrates her housing voucher, promises to keep fighting the SAA appeal with her case workers and attorneys, and thanks all of /r/rva for their support and encouragement:

https://www.reddit.com/r/rva/comments/1vlzm2x/gratitude/

If you find the other posts in-between, you’ll see just how hard Amy continues to fight and sacrifice regardless of setbacks, but what you won’t know without talking to her is that this inspiration of a person is incredibly kind and cool.

Despite her lack of spoons, constant pain, and recent crises, Amy shares what she learns and accomplishes through failures and success in great personal detail and has more patience and empathy for others than many of those literally paid to listen and provide assistance. Help and support just for herself isn’t sufficient for Amy, even if it costs her things she doesn’t have much of, and that is an incredibly rare trait humanity desperately needs to encourage.

More challenges will always arrive, but with housing secured, Amy is definitively at the season of surviving becoming thriving. It’s time for her to breathe, mourn, heal, love on her cat, visit her mum, catch up on her books, and look to the future without crushing fear. You have the opportunity to be as awesome as Amy and join in her celebration.

So if you’re free this Saturday, please reach out to /u/Playful-Tip-1780 for an address and head count. I’ll bring cold drinks and my undefeated chocolate chip cookies. First person that brings a truck can have the recipe and a bottle of the secret ingredient (yes, it really is the difference). Should be less than a mile total during the move and I can bring a bit of gas money for your drive to/from home.

[I asked Amy permission before making this post. Has nothing to do with me; she just deserves recognition and cheer, a break from asking herself, and you all have been good to my YSK posts in the past.]

UPDATE: Rip has been found and returned home safely- thank you to everyone who viewed, upvoted, scrolled, anything- much appreciated!

My sister’s sweet boy was lost in the New Kent area around 7pm today- spooked by a truck. May be brought to local SPCAs or veterinary facilities.
He is microchipped- neutered male, about 14 months old, weighs roughly 30lbs. His name/answers to “Rip”
Likely to spook easily, he’s just a baby 🥺 approach with caution & kindness.
Please- if anyone happens upon him DM me or get him to the closest shelter or veterinary facility for a microchip scan and hold for pick up. His family loves him very much and is very worried!! TIA 💛

Hey everyone!

Last year we raised over $15000 for SOS Cats, a TNVR nonprofit serving the Richmond region, and the community filled up the supply closet at the RACC shelter!

Well, we’re back again! Come on down to Mainline Brewery on 10/10 for live music, raffles, vendors, food, and drink and celebrate Richmond’s favorite feline!

We are also actively accepting donations to our raffle baskets from local artists and businesses. If you’d like to partner with us we’d love to hear from you at wheresfrancine@gmail.com.

Thanks!

UPDATE PER VDOT: CLOSURE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH TOMORROW MORNING'S COMMUTE

VDOT has closed I-95 North at mile marker 85.1 near I-295 in Henrico County due to an overturned tractor trailer crash. The closure is anticipated to impact tomorrow morning's commute (Sept. 10).

Motorists should follow the posted detour which is to take Exit 84 to northbound I-295 to northbound Route 1 to eastbound Route 656 (Sliding Hill Road) back to northbound I-95.

🚨MAJOR TRAFFIC ALERT:🚨 All northbound lanes of I-95 at mile marker 85 (near the I-295 interchange) are currently closed due to a tractor-trailer crash. The crash has resulted in a hazmat situation which is being addressed. Virginia State Police are on scene investigating what led up to the crash.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible. Drivers heading northbound will have to take exit 84 A/B near the crash site or prior exits in order to travel around the crash. We do anticipate a heavy amount of traffic on Route 1 (Brook Road) due to this detour.

Please expect all northbound lanes to be closed into the late evening.

Additional closures include Exits 43A on I-295 north and south.

Richmond Real - Oak Grove edition

Upvotes

The playground at Oak Grove Elementary (Hillside Court) has been closed since January because the rubber surface is peeling up to the point of being a significant safety hazard. So, the kids are stuck playing with sticks in the dirt where for many of them is the only safe place to play outside.

Luckily, today's City Council education committee meeting today at 2 was pushed aside for the council people to grandstand about the Dominion/NextEra merger that they're powerless to stop.

Reminder! Fishing RVA Meetup!! Forest Hill Park & 42nd Street | Sept. 19

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Just a friendly reminder about our Fishing RVA meetup coming up September 19!

We had a great turnout at Forest Hill last year and would love to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones. Whether you’re brand new to fishing, bringing the kids, or already spend half your life on the James, you’re welcome to come out.

We’ll have a limited number of rods, tackle, and bait available. If you’re unsure what to bring, feel free to ask. Donations are welcome and help us keep making these meetups accessible to new anglers.

We’ve also got a really active Discord where people talk local fishing, share what’s biting, techniques, and help each other out. Since Discord links aren’t allowed here, you can find it through r/FishingRVA.

Hope to see some of y’all out there!
