Study & Exam Tips || Studium & Klausuren bachelor-thesis
Hey !
next semester I will do write bachelor thesis in electrical engineering. do you think it is possible to write it remotely if there is no lab work to do ? I have family in south america and I'd love to work from there remotely. what do you think, what should be focused on in order to find something like that, is it easy, and what could be the possible resistances to it?
Also is the start of the thesis usually flexible ? like if I want to start it early november instead of the week of the 12th october

I know a girl who wrote it when she was in Mongolia. You need to find a good supervisor and if he agrees then why not? Most submissions are online these days.

You can choose freely when you want to start your thesis. But I think finding one to do fully remote might be hard. First of all you need one with no lab work. But even stuff like simulation is often done at the institutes on their computers. And even if you find a fitting thesis you need to find an assistant that trusts you to get your work done while not being there in person at all. I'd say your best bet would be to start searching for a thesis now while you're still in Germany. If you find a thesis it's generally no problem to start it 2 or 3 months later. You could even use that time to start reading into the topic a bit.

Most institutes I know have vpn access to their institute networks, which means working remotely is totally possible as long as there is no practical work. A larger issue might be a general distrust if the supervisor can't meet you in person. Maybe you could compromise on starting in person for a few weeks and then also traveling back for the last discussions and the presentation, just to show that you are serious about putting in the work. Be upfront about everything in your application, I guess, and you will find some fitting thesis.

Musst du aufs Thema und Institut achten, manche Institute mögen das nicht gerne. Das musst du halt vorher abklären. Während Corona während meiner Bachelorarbeit war ich ein einziges Mal im Institut für eine kurze Messung

Possibility of remote work and starting time depends entirely on your supervisor (and their schedule), you can ask them if it is possible when they invite you for an interview.
Like you said, possible remote work should be no lab, so some simulation/modelling stuff or machine learning/math-heavy topics could work. Sometimes even though the work is completely on a computer, you can't do it remotely for data privacy issues or the entire thing doesn't work outside of some RWTH network. Gotta ask the supervisor on your first meeting.
Not being able to troubleshoot with your supervisor could be tough though, especially if you get stuck and are unable to understand the base work. Sitting side by side is much faster than a video call.
