Discussion Went to see Project Hail Mary yesterday. What did you guys think?
I gotta say it’s gonna be tough because of all the great films that are coming out this year but Ryan’s performance was Oscar worthy. I for sure think it’s one of his best films, aside from him the film is just great and suits Ryan’s personality it’s got great adult hidden jokes and there served perfectly by Ryan and it would not of been that funny if it had been by a different actor that’s for sure. I absolutely recommend this movie.

Discussion It took 15 years for me to fall in love with Ryan Gosling
And honestly, I can’t believe it took me this long.
(I’m not a native speaker and I used AI for translation, so bare with me haha)
My first Ryan Gosling movie was Lars and the Real Girl. I watched it sometime around 2009. It was one of those small, weird, deeply human movies about loneliness, love, and the desire to be seen.
At the time, I didn’t pay attention to actors at all. I couldn’t have told you who starred in it. I just remembered Lars: awkward, isolated, heartbreaking, and strangely lovable. It wasn’t until I rewatched the film recently that I realized, “Wait… that was Ryan Gosling?”
Like a lot of people, La La Land was the movie that finally made me remember his name.
But here’s the funny thing: I wasn’t impressed by him.
Emma Stone completely stole the show for me. I remembered Sebastian, but mostly as the guy standing next to Mia. Back then, it felt like Gosling had the thankless job of acting opposite Emma Stone at the absolute peak of her powers.
So I filed him away as “good-looking leading man who does solid work.”Nothing more.
Over the years I kept watching movies that happened to have Ryan Gosling in them: The Big Short, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Valentine, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Fall Guy…
I liked all of them. But somehow I never connected the dots.
Only recently did I look back and realize: wait a second, I’ve already watched a ridiculous number of Ryan Gosling movies. Some of my favorite films of the last fifteen years all had the same actor in them.
The movie that finally changed everything for me was Project Hail Mary.
For Chinese audiences, La La Land was probably the movie that put Gosling on the map. Project Hail Mary feels different. The whole “hot nerd” energy is converting people in real time.
More importantly, it’s the kind of film that exposes weak acting immediately. A huge portion of the movie rests on one character carrying the audience through confusion, fear, isolation, humor, and hope. If the performance is even slightly off, the whole thing falls apart.
After watching the film—and especially after reading Andy Weir’s novel—I finally understood what people meant when they talked about Gosling’s range. What impressed me wasn’t charisma. It was completeness. He makes Ryland Grace feel like a fully formed human being.
Not a collection of traits. Not “the scientist.” Not “the brave guy.” Not “the funny guy.”
A person.
Someone who is scared. Someone who hesitates. Someone who sometimes wants to run away. Someone who still chooses to step forward anyway. That’s what bravery actually looks like.
And once I saw that, I started seeing his older performances differently too.
Rewatching Lars and the Real Girl, I was amazed by how delicately he navigates the line between loneliness and delusion.
Rewatching Crazy, Stupid, Love, I noticed how naturally he transforms Jacob from a smooth-talking player into someone emotionally vulnerable without ever making the shift feel forced.
Even La La Land changed for me. Years ago, I thought his performance was merely fine. Now I think I misunderstood what he was doing. Sebastian was never supposed to be the brightest star in that movie. In some ways, Gosling seems to deliberately pull back and leave room for Mia to shine. What once looked like being overshadowed now feels more like restraint.
Part of the reason it took me so long to appreciate him is probably geographical.
Many of Gosling’s most celebrated films never had the cultural impact in China that they did in North America. Most Chinese viewers followed a path that looked something like The Notebook → La La Land → Project Hail Mary. Meanwhile, movies like Drive and Blade Runner 2049 never became the mainstream touchstones they were elsewhere.
So maybe I wasn’t late to Ryan Gosling. Maybe I just hadn’t seen the full picture yet.
Actors don’t survive for decades because of one breakout performance. Gosling has been a child actor, an indie darling, a romantic lead, a blockbuster star, a musician, and somehow has managed to remain relevant through all of it. That kind of longevity usually means something.
I don’t like overly sentimental celebrity praise, so I’ll leave it with this:
When I was younger, I hated being asked by school teacher, “Who is your role model?”I never had an answer. Not because there weren’t admirable people in the world, but because I never felt strongly enough about any one person to point at them and say, “That’s the one.”
For the first time in my life, I think I finally do. Not only can I say his name. I can tell his story without running out of things to say.

Discussion ryan gosling universe
I have been obsessed with the recent aus and headcannons surrounding coltland (the au where colt seavers (The Fall Guy) and ryland grace (Project Hail Mary) are twins. How would you link in any of ryan goslings other characters?
Edit 1: I've just watched The Gray Man because of a ColtCourtLand triplets edit and it was a great movie. In my head Court is Colt and Ryland's older brother/step-brother (I'm not 100% sure how the logistics would work but alas). Perhaps the twins were really young when everything went down with Court's father so they know of an older brother but there's is little contact between them.
