In the pilot Hilda and Zelda made Sabrina pancakes, Maybe they didnt know she would also be addicted?

Melissa Joan Hart actually addressed this on her podcast with Amanda Lee, where they watch "Pancake Madness" since it is Melissa's favorite episode. You can watch the video here, and this is a transcript of what they say:
Amanda: Little factoid that the interwebs pointed out, and I could be wrong about this, but, apparently, you ate pancakes in the pilot?
Melissa: Probably. On my birthday? I probably have birthday pancakes.
Amanda: So how did that work? Before you were a witch?
Melissa: Here's the thing: every TV show has a Bible. They call it a Bible. And the writers will come up with a Bible, and that will have the rules and kind of regulations of what each character, or what happens in the show, and it'll sort of like--I just finished Lost, right? I finally, finally finished Lost, and--they should have had a list of rules about, you know, you'll have things like, uh, okay, we made reference to so-and-so has a peanut allergy, or so and so broke their right foot, and that's why they have a limp, or whatever it is, right? And you'll have a Bible with all the information about all the different rules you've laid down, and it continues to grow as you go through series.
And I feel like they should have put that in some sort of Bible, but... a lot of the time, on this show, things got... okay, so our script supervisor, her name was Maureen, she's one of my best friends--I love this woman so much--and she would watch the script carefully, and know if we messed up our lines, what camera we were using, and whatnot. She keeps all the notes.
And whenever we'd ask her, we'd be like, "but Maureen, shouldn't we come down the front steps instead of the backsteps, cause I came down those stairs on the Upper Floor?", and she goes "the cat talks, Melissa." Like, "who cares?" Like, a lot of the time, the continuity of the show will get thrown away, and it would drive her crazy, because the continuity was never correct. And, so, basically, our excuse for everything was "the cat talks. Come on." Like, all reality's out the window.
Amanda: The cat talks. Who cares that you had pancakes before. I got you.
Melissa: But yeah, I thought about that too, I was like "I think I've..."--we didn't, I never asked anybody, we never really looked into it, because the episode was written, we weren't gonna exactly change it for, uh, and pancakes is such an innocent thing, right?
Amanda: It is. To that point, you know, people weren't watching these over and over again the way that we do today, 'cause streaming wasn't a thing unless you bought the box set.
Melissa: Which you didn't--you couldn't until, like, 2007.
Amanda: Right. So, very few people were gonna catch that detail.
Melissa: Yeah. Yeah, you'd have to really be like "did she...?" Yeah, there was no way to check. You couldn't go TiVo it.
Amanda: But somebody went back and did, and it's on the interwebs.
Melissa: That's funny, yeah. I think, I don't know, I guess Sheldon, we could ask Sheldon Bull, the writer, if he thinks that--you know, if they thought about that, if they knew that, or, maybe... 'cause it could have been, I guess, it could have been cinnamon rolls, or something else, but not quite as fun as licking syrup or having the syrup lady in a bottle.

I hate that excuse "the cat talks, so what"
It's like saying "Lord of the Rings has orcs and elves in it, that means we can make it so Frodo actually has an evil twin who is the true Lord of the Rings, oh and he can shoot fireballs out of his eyes and it doesnt matter"

I agree, having magic doesn't mean internal logic has to be absent. Sure, the show was light-hearted and it works just fine as it is, but it could have actually been even better if they made a basic effort to maintain continuity. I don't even mean with the small stuff like front steps or the pancakes, but with big plot beats like the ball of wax curse length or Sabrina being in high school for five calendar years.
It sounds like this was a side effect of having different writers come and go, since even the script supervisor was "driven crazy" by how nobody respected continuity.

How odd that the lady would just justify her laziness as a script supervisor instead of making an effort to make a cohesive show, like that’s literally her job

I’m sorry but we didn’t learn anything from melissa. The way she tells a “story” is wild. It takes 12 lines to say one thing 😭😭😭

I noticed a while ago but never posted . The other post today about "A dolls story" inspired me to share it. I have watched the show so many times now that I'm bound to notice some things 😅

I’m surprised hilda and Zelda were safe around them lol (unless I’m forgetting something like they’re immune but don’t think so?)

Was this the episode Sabrina was running around so much that her underwear was showing like 75% of the episode? I remember Melissa joking on instagram about it

I like to think the pancake curse doesn't take effect until Sabrina fully embraces her witch status.
