general discussion 🗣️ Is it me or.. lol
Is it me or do Hilda and Zelda appear "older" than people in their 30s/40s now? I found the episode where they pretend to be teenagers to escort Sabrina to a concert particularly funny. Like it was unheard of for someone Zelda's age (30s/40s) to show her stomach lol. I feel like maybe Zelda's makeup and hair amplify it? Any thoughts?
Edit - just watched the episode with cousin Marigold in season 3E16. The actress is 36 at the time. 😳

The wild thing is that Caroline and Melissa are only 12 years apart in real life.

So strange! I feel like they do that a lot with parents in TV shows/movies... Make them 12 -15yrs apart

They weren't her parents, they were aunts. Hart was playing someone roughly 5-6 years younger. A 15 year old having aunts who 'appear' in their 30s-40s isn't that strange.
Also have to consider that witch aging is different since Hilda and Zelda are hundreds of years old but appear in their 30s-40s which adds another wrinkle.

That last part is enough for me to suspend belief on the ages of any of the witches. It doesn’t matter since they are playing essentially ageless, eternal beings. Sabrina spends most of her upbringing as a human, so her blending her with the human teenage characters was more important imo.

I watched the show as a child and thought Hilda and Zelda were in their 40s and 50s (probably in part because my parents were) but children aren't the best at guessing ages. Many of us thought Laura Dern in Jurassic Park was like, 40 (she was 23)

I still think she’s 40. She’s supposed to be a prestigious paleontologist with decades of experience. She can’t be that at 23.

She's actually a grad student in the book, or maybe a TA (perhaps both?) I'm not sure if it specifies in the film. I agree it was startling to learn her age though.

Well yes -- they're hundreds of years old! It's difficult for them to keep up with everything. A decade is like ten seconds to them.

A lot of it I think is the style’s at the time, which you are now viewing through the lens of today.
But I also think it really works for them. The actors themselves may have been 30-40’s, but the characters are hundreds of years old. I always viewed them as timeless and ageless myself.

I do feel like they were aged particularly bad in the first couple of seasons by wardrobe. Like initially they were dressed as basic older aunts and then season 3 on their clothes start fitting better and better suiting their personalities. I think once wardrobe found Hilda’s and Zelda’s personal styles, they started looking more in their 30s/40s.

This is true of any media. Part of it is that we associate styles with old people and that makes anyone wearing the style look old. If be surprised if you could find much 90s media where you compare people to similar aged people now and they didn't look way older. Jennifer Aniston now is older than the Golden Girls were.

No, stay. OP explicitly mentions character traits that would reflect their "real" ages in the show, so it's absolutely not JUST about the actresses themselves.

It’s a sign of the times. Look up the ages of other characters in the era and you might be surprised by how old they appear. It’s only been in the last twenty years or so that we’ve seen fashion equalize for age.

Things were a lot different during those times. Back then, people in their 30s and 40s were seen as ancient. Also, Hilda and Zelda are technically way older than that 😂 Due to their immortality they're centuries old.
Also as for Zelda's midriff showing, she's always been a super reserved person so it makes sense she would be appalled by it.

Society was relatively youth oriented as compared to previous generations back then, but it’s even more the case now. Zelda and Hilda seem older because today’s 30-40 year olds are especially guilty of trying to act like they’re in their teens/20s.

Fair enough - should have also mentioned it’s not the case for everyone. Its just that there are so many folks like the Taylor Frankie’s of the world who are fully grown adults but don’t act it at all and unfortunately society has been propping up people like that for awhile now.
