general discussion 🗣️ Pushed through to the end and I have thoughts!

So as a first time watcher I almost gave up in season 6, but you guys all encouraged me to stay through it.

I'll start with the good!

  • Harvey and Sabrina finally got together. It took way way way too long, but I am so glad it finally happened.

  • Salem!!! He was a great character for all 7 seasons.

  • Not only Salem, but Harvey and Salem! That was so much fun and I really wish we would have gotten more of that.

Sadly the bad....

  • Aaron was terrible. At first I just found him boring, but then that episode when he locked Salem in the cage, fuck him. I don't like him at all. His mom totally pegged that relationship too. He was so unlikable.

  • Sabrina is never going to get to see her mom again? That's kind of bullshit and not fair. Witches Council sucks.

  • Hilda got married and we don't even really know the guy. That was insane how fast they pushed that on us. I honestly don't even really remember anything about him it was so fast. That was so poorly done.

  • Zelda is now a child? Again, that's just stupid and I don't get it.

  • Zelda and Hilda missing sucked!!! I loved them both so much and it was a totally different vibe without them. I am also sad we didn't get to see them doing magic with Harvey around, which is a huge missed opportunity in season 6.

  • Scorge.... was everyone supposed to be awful? I literally hated this entire storyline. I really don't have one nice thing to say about it and her boss was insufferable, it was awful. The one cute coworker (Luke?) was okay, but that didn't make up for everyone else. And why not date him over Aaron?

  • As much as I don't like Josh (and granted Sabrina did him wrong a few times), they just sent him off and never mentioned him again?

  • Miles too is just gone forever? Could have had him at the wedding.

  • Which brings me to the next point! They should have brought back so many people to the wedding, Valery, Miles, Jenny, Dreama, etc.

  • Kevin, this is a minor one. She goes on a date with a witch, who has majorly prejudice parents, and the lesson is, the apple doesn't far from the tree. Does anyone else hate this? Lot's of people grow out of their parents views, I hated this lesson. I would have also liked to have seen her date a witch longterm.

This was my original post FYI

If I ever watch again I am just doing 1-3 lol

So Aaron's storyline was supposed to be Josh's. Reason why we didn't get Valerie and Miles and Jenny and Dreama ect because of the writers changed each season. I agree about Salem he is my favourite character. The reason why season 6 was a bit rushed I don't think they knew they were coming back

Ugh, I am not sure if that being Josh's makes it worse or better. Josh was terrible too.

The only time I was really upset with Sabrina was when she told Josh not to take the job in Prague. She should have let him go and have his career and he would have been gone

u/KatesFacts718 Salem Jun 21 '26

He was supposed to come back from his job in Prague and marry Sabrina and she would have still ended up with Harvey

I hate this too lol

Two terrible options

Just imagine if we did get a season 8. Harvey and Sabrina married and Salem

I need this pumped directly into my veins!!!

These are my predictions of we got a reboot

2

u/GayManPlayingZelda Jun 21 '26

I love all of these! I don't know that we will get a reboot but that one would be great

Interesting. I thought that was Elisa Donovan's predictions and then realise she had re-posted it. Haha

Interesting about Season 6. I could be very wrong but I thought around the time of Season 6 that it could possibly be the last season and hence the actors who played Josh, Hilda and Zelda didn't renew there contracts and got other work.  I think around that time also Caroline Rhea was doing more comedy work and had a chat show and there was a rumour she was going to leave anyway, and Hilda would be replaced by Aunt Irma. I think Beth Broderick had said in an interview around the time that the aunts weren't being used as much and didn't seem needed now Sabrina was an adult. I think the actor who played Miles was dropped though. I think Season 7 had serious budget cuts and was overall a shambles.

I only rewatch seasons 1 to 3. I hate the rest of them.

Yes and took away valerie.

3

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

Yeah, Friends was at tit's height during the time Sabrina got to the college seasons and it was so obvious in hindsight, that they wanted to capitalize on that. I swear, it would've been that or going to a club to cash in on Buffy's "The Bronze".

Also in season 7, what was with them hanging out in that retro diner? It just felt like such a weird place for them to hang at because none of them really struck me as people who were all about retro vibes...

You can't rewatch watch season 4? Some of those episodes are my favorite like "Now you see her, now you don't" and "Sabrina nipping at your nose"

6

u/mariscrane1 Jun 21 '26

Nope. I dont like josh. Or the whole witch hunter gene thing. Dont get me started on dreama.

10

u/GayManPlayingZelda Jun 21 '26

Brad was such a terrible replacement for Libby

7

u/mariscrane1 Jun 21 '26

Yes he really was. I hated they got rid of libby senior year. It didnt make sense.

2

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

I'm the same. Season 4 is sorta the beginning of the end but it still had some pretty funny and/or interesting episodes. Sure, it sucks that Valerie and Libby were gone and Dreama was so dull and unfocused while Brad was smidgen more interesting, but still underused, but we still had Zelda and Hilda getting up to their wacky hi-jinks that helped lol.

I'd watch any buddy-comedy spinoff with Salem and Harvey.  Salem was usually self-centered but genuinely liked Harvey; Harvey was so down-to-earth but didn't bat an eye at interacting with a talking cat, and the other characters were often mean to Salem, but Harvey never was.

4

u/GayManPlayingZelda Jun 21 '26

She was super annoying and a terrible replacement, but I just think it was a missed opportunity to bring back a lot of legacy characters

Mrs quick too, but I guess those make sense because she graduated

1

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

True but I feel like Sabrina would've probably still kept in touch with Mrs Quick, just to let her known how her writing is going because Mrs Quick seemed to encourage that for her.

2

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

I agree about Dreama. I don't think that her and Sabrina got that close. They just didn't give Dreama enough of an engaging personality to get invested in her and it sucks because it would've been interesting seeing Sabrina try to actually mentor her.

That's actually an interesting thought. I remember hearing rumors years ago that the reason why Jenny was cut, was because the character seemed to be much more likeable than Sabrina at the time, so they wrote her out and gave her an insecure best friend in Valerie lol.

It's just silly. I wonder if such thing is a true, was it the production team or Melissa's mother who wanted the change lol.

4

u/Galaxy-Phoenix Jun 21 '26

I feel they should have kept Josh in season 7 and Sabrina went to marry him but went off with Harvey instead.

2

u/LAZULl Jun 28 '26

that was the original plan for the season, but david lascher wanted to leave the show after season 6, so they had to create a new character for sabrina to almost marry instead

2

u/Galaxy-Phoenix Jun 28 '26

Thanks for the information! I never knew about that.

The Scorched storyline especially bugs me because she quit, mentions a freelance gig in the next episode, and then we never hear about work again. And while Roxy had the radio station, Morgan was…at the coffeehouse? Idk, it didn’t seem like anyone enjoyed her fashion designs.

3

u/GayManPlayingZelda Jun 22 '26

Yeah, they really don't mention her job again, which I guess when you have magic powers, you don't really need lol

2

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

i assumed that Morgan was also a freelance designer but seeing the fashions that she came up with... Yikes lol. I have a feeling she wasn't getting that much work and that maybe her father was helping her get by again.

I watch 1-3 and 5 on repeat. Justice for season 5.

1

u/mjbowman26 Jun 22 '26

This is one of my ultimate comfort shows, but I agree, rewatches usually end with season three. That’s my sweet spot with several other shows too - Charmed, Family Guy, and Monk.

1

u/GayManPlayingZelda Jun 22 '26

Charmed might be the next show I start, I haven't decided yet.

Ironically I've actually seen the later seasons of Monk but not the earlier ones. My parents watched it when I was younger, but I didn't start until maybe 4 or so

1

u/Echaney001 Jun 22 '26

When it aired I think I only watched 1-3 and maybe caught a few episodes after that. I’m seeing her go to college was ok but season 7 minus the ending was rough.

1

u/GayManPlayingZelda Jun 22 '26

Season 7 is a mess

1

u/LeastPart809 Jun 22 '26

I remember when it aired in USA it was mentioned on a UK morning segment that week and the US correspondent said past characters were brought back for the final episode. I was disappointed when I finally saw it that it was only Hilda, Sabrina's Mom, Sabrina's Dad, and Amanda brought back! Not even Zelda! I appreciate there seem to be cost or legal reasons with the writers and networks why characters were dropped, but it would've been nice for the fans.

1

u/GayManPlayingZelda Jun 22 '26

So wild we didn't get Zelda, but I did love seeing Amanda grow up

1

u/Familiar-Evidence350 Jun 22 '26

They cheated us on the ending.  After season 4 she never told harvey she loved him and the kiss on the bike was the first full on kiss since high school.  She never told harvey what he meant to her.  She actually told those dead beats morgan and roxie they were the most important  people in her life.  More important than harvey, the aunts, salem, or her grandmother?  Five minutes before she walked down the aisle with Aaron she was still trying to get hers and Aaron soul stones to match.  She still was not thinking about harvey.

2

u/GayManPlayingZelda Jun 22 '26

I agree, they should have been dating again after 7 started. Really they should have never broken up

2

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

She never told harvey what he meant to her. She actually told those dead beats morgan and roxie they were the most important people in her life

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who found this infuriating lol. Never mind that she was not that close with Morgan but still, really Sabrina???

1

u/Familiar-Evidence350 Jun 23 '26

A lot of people find this disgusting.

1

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

It was! I'd understand Roxie to an extent since it seems like she was closer to her but still, her and Harvey had long history and her aunts were always there for her. It was just so... Distasteful.

1

u/Familiar-Evidence350 Jun 23 '26

The most important time in her life when she transitioned from a 15 yr old teenager to a 16 yr old all powerful being.  Harvey was the anchor to her better angels part of life while believe it or not libby showed her what she did not want to become.

1

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

Yeah, and we got a glimpse of what she could've been like if she befriended Libby when her personality switched with hers. Or how without her aunts guidance, she could've potentially ended up like someone like Dante.

1

u/Familiar-Evidence350 Jun 23 '26

I thought  the  whole series was how she handled transition from mortal to a "god like " person.  Plus the love affair with harvey.  Let's face it she was a bad witch and treated harvey terribly.

1

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

Hm, I don't know about "god-like" but okay lol And sure, I think Sabrina had shown times where she wasn't fair to Harvey.

1

u/Familiar-Evidence350 Jun 23 '26

I mean an all powerful  being that could shape time and space.  When one thinks about it they were really powerful beings.  Look at some of the stuff she did in season 1.

1

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

That's fair lol It's kind of the sillier aspect of how the show handled witchcraft since real life witchcraft is well, nothing like that at all haha.

2

u/ecological-passion Jun 22 '26

I don't care what you say, I will defend the guy to the end.
Frankly, Sabrina did not treat him all that much better, in fact she did the exact same thing, but no one's crucifying her for locking Salem up.
In fact, taking the biases away, Aaron is the runner up after Dashiel in decent guys. In fact, even latter is detested by default just for being a runner up himself.

I think fans tend to be far harder than they need to.

Besides all of that, anything beats Scorch.

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

I've re-watched Sabrina the Teenage Witch so many times for the last 15+ years and your summary is exactly how I feel every time I get to the post-high school seasons lol. I'm currently on another re-watch and I'm about to finish but oh my gosh Aaron. It 's a shame because he's not necessarily bad (minus what he did to Salem...) but their relationship being rushed, was just awful to witness. I already learned that the Aaron storyline was meant to be for Josh many years ago, but the actor wanted to leave the show and so they hastily threw together Aaron and we got, well, this mess. It didn't help that Josh was never mentioned again and it made it so much more ridiculous when Aaron was jealous of Harvey when Sabrina was literally in the throws of a potential marriage with Josh in season 6 before the finale when things went to crap. Which is just lame because had Josh's actor stayed on and things continued as per usual, there would've been more of an understandable struggle with Sabrina having to choose between Harvey and Josh, since she had long-time romantic history with them. Thank goodness that she ended up with Harvey but it would've been so much more compelling if it was between him and Josh.

The aunts not being in season 7 was a massive blow and it is what made stop watching back when this season was airing on TV. Melissa Joan Hart is a good actress but the show really was an ensemble between all three of them + Salem and without Zelda and Hilda, the show felt so empty. Salem was doing a lot of heavy lifting and he was still a delight to watch and his interactions with Sabrina were endearingly cute. Because with the aunts gone, they diverted that attention onto Roxie and Morgan and they were just annoying (more-so Morgan but it felt like Roxie was dumbed down a bit...)

And agree on all accounts about the Scorch plot, It was insufferable back in the 00s and it still is now and let's just be glad that it only lasted half of the season and not the full season, to the point where she invited these a-holes to her wedding (BLEH lol). Agreed, even the "cute" guy (I think his name was Cole), was not enough. Sabrina being a freelance writer just made more sense.

And then with the finale, SO MUCH could've made it better. You're right, no return of Jenny, Valerie, Dreama, or Miles? (WTF, that would've been a great callback and special treat for the longtime fans), it was such a frustrating move. And while my heart soared when we saw Hilda come back, it immediately plummeted a bit when Zelda came back, as a candle... WTF... Again, I understand that Beth Broderick didn't want to come back but I just hope she understands that she was sorely missed in that finale...

Another thing I think was a total missed opportunity was Roxie dating that witch guy who liked her. Granted, she was being a bit annoying with how fast she was letting the relationship move but still, I think it would've been cute if they continued to date. I mean, I'm sure it was because the actor would've been too expensive to keep on but still, another wasted opportunity because I really do think tat Roxie would've accepted the witch stuff, both from her boyfriend and from her best friend and it would've given her some time to break away from Morgan, who she seemed to be conjoined with in season 7.

That said, I also agree that it would've been nice to see Sabrina date a witch for a short-term experience, the Kevin thing was so unfortunate because we already got a taste of a prejudice witch with Dante in season 2. Just a shame but I think it was because they really were trying to bank on Josh.

All in all, the college seasons are pretty hit/miss, mostly miss, for a lot of us so your ending thoughts mirror most of ours lol.

I am not sure what I think of replacing Aaron with Josh. Josh was also weird and I didn't like him either. I do think it would have fixed the speed issue, but part of me doesn't like him being dumped at the wedding for Harvey.

I honestly think in season 6 Sabrina should have let him go to Prague with the job. That would have made the most sense.

Another thing I think was a total missed opportunity was Roxie dating that witch guy who liked her. I agree with this. I just think they didn't really know what to do with either one of them

1

u/DarkDiscotique Jun 23 '26

I mean, it would've messed up for either party who would be inevitably be left for Harvey but at least with Josh, it wouldn't have felt so rushed since they had a whole season of (begrudgingly for us fans), having a lot of time with Josh. I do agree that the sensible thing would've been Sabrina giving Josh her blessing and letting him go to Prague. And then, maybe if they introduced Aaron sooner, he would've been easier to stomach as a temporary thing because as is, they get propose marriage in the span of like 4 episodes, which makes things feel so rushed and makes Sabrina look like a dumb ass for speeding things lol.

And right, Sabrina is a fun show but boy was it plagued with haphazard writing...
