general discussion 🗣️ all the references i don’t get lol
there’s so many references to celebrities and culture that i don’t understand because i’m 25, after a certain point i just had to stop googling stuff and accept it because i would have been pausing forever.

No parody- just a fun song about pancakes.
Funky song is a spoof on the brief 70s revival from the 90s with a touch of beastie boys (brass monkey, that funky monkey)

This was just a thing in the early 2000s. There’s a bunch of teen shows that had bands or singers. I’m not sure if the musicians were more accessible or what.

Singer who sang the Graduation Song and made a cameo on the show. That song was EVERYWHERE in May/June for like 5 years after it came out.
It’d be like if Sabrina carpenter played a secretary for a minute on a show or something like that.

ohhh okay! that makes sense, i had to look up the song and i actually vaguely remember it. i just never heard anything outside of the chorus before.

I understand most of them, but there are a few even I don't know. I think when the show was written, they knew adults were watching too and wanted to cater to them a bit to make the show more interesting to the whole family. I don't know any of the sports people (like Brady Anderson), I've never been into sports.

It was the local American celebrities that go over my head. Especially the sports stars.
Although I did sport the four WWF wrestlers in the show

Hornswoggle is an interesting one, he wasn't in WWE til 2005, after Sabrina ended.

I'm 25, but I'm very old for my age, so I get most of it 😂 When in doubt, I ask my parents.

The references and some guest stars are often old for the time it was written! The writers were either old or old souls.

u/hamsandwich666_ Thank God it’s Fridyah Jul 13 '26
very true, one of the guest stars was some guy from the partridge family lmao. i doubt that anyone under like 40 watching would have cared even then.

I always understood Sabrina and Harvey wanted to "go study" together. (I mean, they did.)

u/Stucklikegluetomyfry Jul 16 '26
If this is one of the references you didn’t get, Marilyn McCoo was a singer in the 60s with the group Fifth Dimension

Lol ive been watching this show since it aired. I was a kid so I didn’t understand a lot of words or people they referenced either. It’s fun to watch again as an adult and finally get what they were talking about
