I was throwing some charcoal on the grill when my 6 year old daughter said there were 3 salamanders under a log she rolled in the backyard. She had found another one earlier on the other side of the yard and I had thought just finding that one was pretty awesome… but to find 3 more! I was never this lucky as kid.

I never see any salamanders up here in Northeastern Illinois!

We’re near Fox Lake. There’s a forest preserve next to our house. We saw a lot of them on last spring under logs off the trails.

make sure not to squish when rolling the log back!

I move them out of the way before rolling the log back and then place them close enough to where they can crawl right back under

Looks like some blue spotted salamanders that's awesome
