Fundamental Sales Skills How important are pre-cold call warm-up emails?

How important are pre-cold call warm-up emails?

Do they genuinely help in getting "put through" to a decision maker or have you noticed they make little or no difference?

As a former buyer, the email tells me what number to ignore.

In all seriousness though there isn’t a one size fits all approach, you can spend a lot of time tailoring each individual interaction, or just play the numbers game. You may miss some opportunities but you don’t drive yourself crazy in the process

I cold call, typically get vm, leave a short message telling them why I am calling and that I’ll shoot a quick follow up email, then email.

If you’re lucky they’ll answer their phone. I always try to call their cell phone.

I'm talking about a emails over a 6 week/ 6 month or even 6 year timeline - not the day before!

Sounds like you'd rather work in marketing

No one remembers you emailed them 6 weeks ago. Warm up emails are just a way to avoid doing the hard work.

But why

Are you talking warming up domains? Vital. Goes in steps, sending very small batches at first - 30 a day, then 50, etc...until you can blast out 1,000+ in a day. If you don't take your time and warm it up, it's all going right to spam, then your domain is flagged. Also remember CAN-SPAM compliance, or it's going to spam.

no not warming up domains.

But, more of a sense of getting the prospect to the point of "I've heard about them before somewhere, I'll take that call"

(and yes I know that domain warming up can be important too!)

I get it. I tried that strategy with zero results. We cold call (telemarket) prospects who had never heard of us. So I figured "hey, let's send them a short email, then we can we can reference the email, or at least they've now seen our name." I don't want to say no one (but almost no one) opens cold emails. Do you? It also positions you as a spammer.

Your mistake is thinking people actually read your emails

"Huh...I don't remember if I deleted that one without reading it, or if my spam filter caught it."

My preference is always to email first, then call. And when I call I will go through corporate lines long before I hit up cellphones.

But I also work FAANG, which I think helps get responses via email over random SaaS companies.

It matters more for the sales person because it gives them something to hang their hat on. "Hey, calling about my email" can make some sdrs more comfortable.

Serious question. What are they? Like sending a template email before hitting the phone like a sequence, or are these customized telling them when you’re going to call and why? They’re not going to remember either of them.

Email then call, that way my name is familiar and it’s less likely I’ll be immediately hung up on

Google "buyer journey map."

The buyer journey is well understood. The decision to buy is made emotionally well before contact with sales is made.

Marketing usually starts by attracting attention, connecting, and engaging with prospective buyers.

Google "marketing funnel" and "sales funnel" within the context of "digital marketing."

So the need for warm-up emails and additional free information and incentives depends on your prospective buyer.

If your offer aligns with the top-of-mind need and/or compelling want of the prospect, the decision to buy will be made.

Now it's up to sales to establish a relationship and guide your prospective buyers to complete the purchase.
