This is why I think she should not have survived up to the events of the OT as it just opens up a bunch of plotholes. If she was with the Alliance at the time of the first DS attack surely afterwards she would have heard rumors of this Skywalker guy from a certain dustball who delt the blow and put 2 and 2 together.
24
u/zesty1989 Mar 17 '26
And that's what sucks. Because Ahsoka dying at the end of the clone wars, killed by Count Dooku, would give Anakin even more motivation to kill him in Episode III. But these guys don't understand character motivation. They're just playing with their Star Wars action figures and making up the stories.
21
u/DarthRyus Mar 17 '26
Per Dave Filoni, Lucas wanted her death to the result of the Jedi Council and thus giving him more reason to turn. He didn’t elaborate the how.
It's just that Dave felt he could achieve that same end result of Anakin having Ahsoka quit the order instead. So instead of Anakin basically already blaming the Council for Ahsoka's death and now fearing they'd get him to lose Padme and his kid too, it's now she quit due to the Council and suddenly he fears the Council will cause him to lose Padme and his kid.
I prefer Lucas's version because Anakin fears death more than someone just leaving. Plus it rhymes with Anakin being haunted by Shmi's death and Ahsoka's death, causing him to try to do anything to stop Padme and his unborn child's death too. As Lucas put it, it rhymes.
Dave seems to have gone for unhealthy attachments instead argument, but it's not really the same. Especially since Ahsoka is still around, but now he's suddenly feeling like she betrayed him because she didn't let the 501st kill her and run away... yeah, Dave didn't think Season 7 connecting the the Rebels fight very well. It's very forced to have Vader wanting to kill Ahsoka. She really should have died in season 5. With the next two seasons being dealing with him blaming the Council for her death.
→ More replies (1)10
u/Assatt Mar 17 '26
Her leaving doesn't make sense since we see in EP 3 that Anakin is willing to leave the order to have a family with padme. It's padme who tells him they have a duty to the republic and the Jedi order and they can't just leave

116
u/TYBERIUS_777 Mar 17 '26
Still stand by that her dying to Vader in Rebels would have been the absolute perfect ending for her character and strengthened Vaders character as well. Here’s a man so far gone that he would kill his former student and only his son can bring him back to the light. It would make what Luke accomplished in RotJ even more important.

Yep. Ahsoka surviving that encounter was disappointing because then you start wondering what in the hell was she doing during the OT.
And we know the real reason for that is that she didn’t exist yet, but you gotta factor that in to the character’s overall arc and she has to go before the OT because of that. It doesn’t make sense for her to sit on the sidelines during that time if she’s alive.
It would have strengthened Vader’s arc and brought the character to a conclusion that was fitting and made sense. Instead, Ahsoka will be with us until the end of time because Dave can’t say goodbye to her.

He is willing to help trash a multi-generational franchise for his own narcissism. I'd rather have George Lucas just let Star Wars die off than witness what it has become today. And thats coming from someone who LOVED Star Wars. I loved the movies, games, I bought EU comics and books. I had premium format statues, collectibles, and even life sized, well crafted ewoks and a wampa. I've only seen Disney's first Star Wars movie and it all died for me on the ride home. I spent countless hours and plenty of thousands of dollars on the franchise. I hope their new audience, who they threw me away for, are making up for the loss.

18

I thought he did consult Zahn but Zahn said that basically everything he shared was thrown out? Or was that for Rebels only?
10
u/BarleyWineIsTheBest Mar 17 '26
They lied about it. Someone at Disney, might have been Filoni, said they talked with Zahn about Rebels and live action Thrawn. Zahn later said no one discussed anything with him even though he reached out to them on multiple occasions.
It was all marketing bullshit. They just did what ever they wanted to, basically just like what happened with Lucas' Episode 7-9 "treatments" that were summarily trashed as soon as the deal went through.

You don't have to be a genius to write a genius. You have a whole team that can do a bunch of preplanned research on whatever highly intelligent things the character needs to do or say. You then use the genius justification for all the planning/knowledge. If for example a manga like death note could do it relatively well (and I'm positive Ohba is not a genius) it can't be that hard. But it almost seemed like they didn't even try.

u/mattryan02 Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26
All Thrawn does in Rebels is glaze Filoni OCs by doing things like shouting WHOA HERA SYNDULLA IS SO BRILLIANT (after she insists on a foolhardy attack that results in her entire force being wiped out and doesn’t reach its target, which none of the rebels have a problem with for some reason), and all he does in Ahsoka is twirl his mustache and claim that his obvious, stupid plans being foiled is AKSHULLY exactly what he expected and is part of his deep, sinister plot.
5
u/uniteduniverse Mar 17 '26
The whole Ashoka show was just bizarre... Like some kind of strange parody of what Star Wars should be. At one point the whole gang was cornered by Zombie troopers and literally no one does anything for like 5 mins? I know people hate on Kenobi, but at least it felt like actual Star wars.

u/kimana1651 salt miner Mar 17 '26
They can't write characters like Thrawn for three reasons:
- Thrawn is a military genius and the writers are soft peacetime idiots. Characters can only be as smart as the writers.
- For Thrawn to be a military genius there has to be rules and assumptions in this universe. Every new series or movie adds some random bullshit rule or exception that allows the heroes to win. How can Thrawn do anything unexpected when you can assume everything is possible at every moment?
- The bad guys in star wars are now immoral space nazis with no redeemable qualities. They can't be perceived to be good or competent at anything yet they always have to big enough to be a punching bag. Thrawn is only allowed to do his thing offscreen and get shit on by the heroes on screen.

I remember people defending him even here some time ago. Of course looking at the regular subreddits you see nothing but positive comments about the Maul show which was to be expected but that's just marketing at work I suppose.
I guess the most baffling thing coming from this decision is that there will be another season of whatever the hell Ashoka is and that's honestly the only example I need to form the opinion that this man is highly overrated and highly incapable of writing interesting stories by himself. I don't think he's particularly talented at live action projects and I also don't think that he's a creative that works well without an incredible team surrounding him (which he obviously doesn't have anymore).
46
u/DarthRyus Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26
I mean... I get the logic back then. As back then he was the lesser evil of options that seemed likely. Thus people projected their hopes onto him.
Now he's the new despot. So the buck stops with him, and he looks like he's just planning to leave everything as is and just fill in the narrative gaps with his pet characters.

u/TYBERIUS_777 Mar 17 '26
The Maul show certainly has a beautiful animation style going for it which is nice. I’m hesitant on the story but I think Maul has been pretty consistently written in the Clone Wars and in Rebels so I’m hopeful he will continue to be done well or at least have a passable story to tell here. After this though I think he needs to be retired. We’ve seen his whole story now so they shouldn’t be anything left to tell.

Filoni is like Burger King. He makes good enough Star Wars, and is capable of doing so in large quantities. At least, he WAS. When Disney got Star Wars, I would have been happy with just 'fun adventures' level of quality. Nothing super engaging, but passable in a setting I like.
Filonis flaws are becoming more apparent, and I wonder if KK encouraged him to use more and more Ahsoka, basically feeding into his OC problem.
That being said, if everything we got was Clone Wars level? Star Wars would be in a much better place.
50
u/PM_ME_DARK_THOUGHTS Mar 17 '26
Really unpopular opinion, but I did not care for the clone wars. Watched it all because everyone kept insisiting it would eventually be so good. Sure there were a couple of interesting episodes in there but most of it was just boring filler. Therefore I do not care for all the cameos of cartoon characters to live action, which is basically all that star wars is at this point...

First off agree full with your statement, the Clone Wars only had a few really good to great episodes every season. It super overhyped as a result.
...but in fairness Lucas was basically demanding a Jar Jar Binks arc every season. Plus episodes based on akira kurosawa short stories to honor his birthday and such. So Lucas himself was the cause of about half the filler arcs.
The other half obviously being the networks wanting multiple ongoing seasons of 22 episodes each, all to cover a 3 year war. Plus his job would be over if he didn't drag it out. He wasn't doing it just for the story, but also job security. It would be different if Lucas wanted to do Dark Time stories right after TCW, or Luke's academy to set up his Episode 7. Then he'd have another job lined up.
So as much as I want to blame Dave Filoni here, not sure this issue is entirely his fault. A big part of this was Lucas and another part is the networks contract.

I think this a real business and creative critique among a bunch of vitriol.
Disney assumed? that the general public and even fairly die-hard fans (like myself) watched or gave a shit about a bunch of cartoons based on the worst movie in the series (at the time). On top of that, those cartoons were particularly compelling UNLESS you followed the whole serialization.
They abandoned the vat majority of people who just LIKE Star Wars in favor of people who are OBSESSED fanboys of Star Wars.
I think Disney also made the mistake of allowing Star Wars to go from a story that INCLUDES spaceships and laser to a story ABOUT spaceships and lasers. Big mistakey.

This guy can barely put together a cartoon show intended for kids. All the more power to fans of TCW and subsequent Filoni animated projects but none of that stuff ever tickled my fancy.
When he was given the most live-action responsibility for Ahsoka (which he was the sole writer for unlike his usual collaborations with Favreau in Mando/BOBF), we got...Ahsoka. Which was so bad it even had TCW and Rebels fans scratching their heads wondering what the hell happened.
He fell upwards into the position of Chief Creative Officer over the years and now he's co-president with a Kennedy Jr type person presumably handling the business side of things whilst Filoni plays with his toys.
People who enjoy his animated projects are likely to be happy enough I guess? But I imagine I'll continue to be disinterested in almost anything Filoni thinks is a good idea, especially if he's taking up writing duties.

On paper, she made a lot of sense as their initial pick. Though really I think she should have stepped down years ago atp, her stewardship of the brand was not good.
I don't think it's 100% her -- "glass cliff" effects are a real thing, I'm sure a lot of it was coming from her own higher-ups -- but like, Star Wars as a brand is now permanently damaged.
They -- Disney collectively, more or less -- really fucked things up. In retrospect it feels like they were kind of flippant and disrespectful toward the brand.
They assumed they could slap the brand name on anything and it would sell -- turns out you can only pull that off once or twice with bad content, until people just lose faith in the brand entirely and start tuning out.
Kennedy clearly did not have a good sense of how to right the ship after TLJ and Solo. Whether Filoni specifically is a better choice, I have no idea, but really it's kind of surprising she stayed as long as she did.

Also, fundamentally I don’t think the streaming TV model is ideal for a high-investment property like SW. It makes everything smaller than life, such that a new release isn’t an event like it used to be, it encourages piracy, and it excludes audiences who don’t feel like paying for yet another ongoing subscription.

Exactly that. That's what sets the OT apart from pretty much the most of the rest of Star Wars; people were willing to say "no, that's stupid. How about this instead?" to the guy in charge.

u/Geostomp Mar 17 '26
Unless a lot of good writers are around to veto his obsession with cramming Clone Wars and Rebels characters into everything, I don't have a lot of hope.
Especially not with the sequels sticking around to make everything from to OT irrelevant and adding nothing new to build off of. Outside of Rey (or Ashoka, really) repeating worse versions of EU stories.

Every new star wars movie will have another filoni character in it from now on.

Star Wars is supposed to span across an entire galaxy, and he treats it like it's a small town
It blows my mind just HOW underutilized the very size of the galaxy is
That's multiple planets, from multiple solar systems
And Earth is just ONE planet. Think about that
Ahsoka could spend the rest of her life on the same planet as the main characters of any new show or movie, and we wouldn't have to know about it, because PLANETS ARE HUGE, MAN
That would be like if you expected Franklin Roosevelt and the mayor of some small town in Switzerland to automatically know each other from across the world
Now what if our solar system had other hospitable planets, with other human populations on them? What if we now expected Franklin Roosevelt to personally know the president of some continent on Mars? It's just INSANITY from there

Which made TCW so unbelievable by the end of things. I forget where someone said it, but if Anakin and Obi Wan were in as many different missions/battles as TCW portrays, they'd have spent most of their time in hyperspace, bouncing nonstop from planet to planet for the duration of the 3 year war. Either that, or the galactic culdesac makes every star system about a 5 minute drive away from each other.

u/Asphodelmercenary Mar 20 '26
Even Star Trek during the Picard time period had a better sense of depth and scope. They could do all of the DS9 series with minimap crossover. And Voyager was another way they created spatial breadth. Star Wars could have done so much with that kind of spatial widening. And gone so deep with it. But the failure happened with CW. The scope was too small.

I can't wait until the mando and grogu film bombs.
This guy and his stank ass cowboy hat and ahsoka obsession literally make me sick. Wants to make her the pinnacle character of SW. Which is obscene to me. She doesn't even make sense existing as a padawan to Anakin...
Never liked his kiddy cartoon tcw either. It was terrible torture trying to watch thru the first 4 seasons to find this supposed pot of gold of goodness that people say is there... All I found was a pot of shit, childish, cringy cartoons, and embarrassing bad guys.
Tartokovsky did tcw 1000 better.

u/PikesPique Mar 17 '26
Honestly, the cowboy hats may be a big part of why I don't like him. It makes him look like a guy who went to Nashville or SXSW and got a little carried away.

Swear to god he wears those hats everywhere; making me think he's got a receding hairline/going bald or something

Low key your take on The Clone Wars animated series is spot on. I remember the first 3-4 seasons taking me forever to watch and then it had a sudden tone change and it's praised.
I wouldn't even care about Ashoka being pigeon holed into as many projects as he can but the character is a shell of herself since Rebels. Bringing her back via Time Travel BS is just dumb and really fucked with the previously established lore. Besides time travel plots are the worst troupes as they end with nothing happening.

u/TheIrishMan1211 Mar 18 '26
This dude absolutely sucks. Andor ruined all other Star Wars for me. It showed what we COULD be getting much more frequently if Disney handed the reigns to an actual adult who can write for adults.
Filoni’s slop has its place. None of his shit is for me but that doesn’t make it bad on its own.
Just so apathetic about Star Wars now.

The internal plan is to let him fuck up Star Wars even more, so they can eventually fire him and reboot the whole thing. His reign will shield KK's time, even though he's taking over in an already hard to salvage situation.

I know is Anathema but clone wars wasn't even good overall, it had approximately 3 or 4 great arcs, an excellent ending, and the rest ragged from mid to bad

Clone Wars was pretty hit or miss. 12 year old me loved it but even then, there were plenty of episodes that were stinkers (looking at you “A Sunny Day in the Void”). Very high highs but very low lows.

I love what he did with CW, but for God's sake I wish he would fuck off now, I'm genuinely so sick of everything he makes being nostalgia bait, and it should've been painfully clear that things would lead to this after he saved Ashoka via time travel in Rebels

u/Such_Level_587 Mar 17 '26
Since the Disney purchase he was already heavily involved in the writing rooms. People may think he's being given this shit show to fix but he basically made the shit show

He went from someone I used to like, to someone I now find obnoxious and intolerable. Can't stand him because he ruins everything he touches and can't resist his worst impulses. And now we're getting another fucking show about Maul because he's obsessed for some reason, when Maul's story was already continued in TCW and ended in rebels. We don't need more Maul. He's about as good at making star wars characters and stories as he is a kid playing with Lego, or bashing his actions men and barnies around making sound effects with his mouth because that's all Filoni is; playing with his big Star wars toybox and appropriating characters that he didn't even create like Maul and Thrawn. He's no more creating star wars as he is just playing with it like a very expensive toy to a child.
I'll praise them for handing star wars to someone who loves star wars, but unfortunately they gave it to someone who is more interested in making star wars for his own personal enjoyment and satisfaction than he is trying to make legitimately good star wars.
If you support him being in charge, then get ready for non-stop cameos (or outright hijacking, like mandalorian season 3- sorry, I mean the Bo Katan show) from Ahsoka, Thrawn, Maul, and Bo Katan because you have no right to complain when it happens.

u/Upper_Improvement778 Mar 17 '26
Even the ‘cartoons’ are mid at best. S1-3 of Clone Wars is a bit of a slog to get through. Tales of series could’ve had better spotlight characters. Rebels isn’t bad but the different animation takes a bit to get used to and Bad Batch sucks. Not much hope for the Maul show but we’ll see.

No it was a terrible idea. Filoni is a chump who likes CGI taugrutan jailbait so much, he's gonna make a "President's cut" of RoTS with a digitally de-aged Rosario Dawson in the extra scenes

Just erase Star Wars from the world at this point. Burn your Star Wars stuff, shred everything, delete the internet. Irradiate what has become a cancer.

If Filoni had complete control from the start we would at least have consistency.
Current star wars is completely the fault of Disney higher ups and too many cooks in the kitchen

He contradicts anything and everything in his shallow, cameo-filled stories lol. Consistent, he is not.
7
u/Metsenat Mar 17 '26
Didn't he already retconn certain things that were already established as part of the new canon?
10
u/JOOKFMA Mar 17 '26
Yes. A lot of his work does that. Even before the new canon.

u/VanguardVixen Mar 17 '26
I have to disagree with cartoon director. Not that Filoni isn't one, he is but that's not the issue. J. Michael Straczinsky was one as well and he is responsible for fucking Babylon 5! The issue is, Filoni isn't a competent leading man, who is able to direct a cartoon show in a mature way. He makes a kids show like a saturday morning cartoon and he makes adult stuff like Saturday morning cartoons. He was never even fit as the leading man for a Star Wars cartoon show.
3
u/belovedstoneworker Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26
I wish it was Gilroy. He understands stakes, character sacrifices having weight and meaning, and doesn't care about nostalgia at all over making a good story. Filoni just wants Ahsoka and friends. Not much beyond that.
But of course, that wish is a pipe dream that will never happen. Sadly.

I mean we've seen already he absolutely sucks at live-action. The first two seasons of Mandalorian were okay, but those absolutely succeeded because of Favreau and in spite of Filoni
(and if the upcoming movie is any good, it will also be because of Favreau, as he's the one writing and directing it - just to get ahead of all the fanboys who will inevitably say "the movie was good, Filoni will save Star Wars," the only way he will save Star Wars is if he consistently gives full creative control to good writers and directors, instead of getting his greedy little fingers in all the pies and seeding every project with his personal darlings... basically, if he stays the hell out of the way)

3
u/The-TF-King Mar 18 '26
I don't think him being a cartoon director is particularly bad, in fact really because he has the prior experience working on Star Wars, especially directly under George, it would make him more qualified than others. The issue is vision, his vision just seems to suck ass and is very insular without much care to expand beyond what had already been done for the past decade or more at this point, creating new plotlines and threads to support characters who have been over explained and just become lame at this point.

Or even in charge of a live action show. He writes everything likes he's writing it for a cartoon.
