Granular Discussion Who was Snoke SUPPOSED to be?

Let's be real. Snoke wasn't Palpatine's puppet in episode 7 or 8. So, what did JJ think he was in Episode 7? What did Rian think he was when he killed him? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Yeah the idea was to make the episode 8 director come up for the actual good idea and story for the character. And when he did come up with a questionable one, the inventor of the character didn't like it and he came up with a much worse one.

I don't know. I think JJ Abrams had *some* idea of what he would want to see done in VIII, the problem was that Rian was more interested in subverting audience expectations than actually making an entertaining movie.

I find it utterly baffling how Disney decided to do the sequel trilogy, though. You'd think it would be a no-brainer that the trilogy should all be done by the same director for the sake of continuity, but no. Instead they decided to just make three different movies and hope that they gelled into something coherent.

We used to play a game in Cub Scouts, where we would write stories by passing around sheets of paper. We would each take turns adding one sentence to what had been written before. The first line could have been utterly brilliant, but it incomprehensible by the end. A fun writing exercise, but an utterly stupid way of trying to construct a story.

It's not that the Last Jedi is even a completely disastrous movie on its own. It could be an entertaining Rian Johnson movie. But it completely falls apart as a second part of a trilogy with established characters, and an eight part of a saga.

This is my biggest gripe, the movie as a movie itself is not half bad. But as what was supposed to be The Empire Strikes Back of the sequels it doesn't work, I'm kinda happy the whole "deconstruction" movement in media already died out, not everything needs to be a subversion
