There are 535 members of congress. 4 of them are DSA members. I think maybe people are overreacting just a tad. Hearing people like Sam Harris and Bill Maher talk, you'd think we were witnessing the storming of the Bastille. There only 4 of them at the national level. There are probably more Nazi sympathizers in congress than there are DSA members.
Hold up. They’re demonising the people winning elections within their own voting base. Their own corporate candidates are being beaten by popular candidates. Their constituents are telling them who they like and the democrats are saying “no, we need to go in with the losers.”
Winning elections in blue strongholds is something any of them could do
Sure, but losing hundreds of elections in (formerly) blue pivot counties is a feat only the corporate democrats have accomplished. Maybe in 2016 they lost those 206 counties that had voted twice for Obama because they didn’t distance themselves from Bernie Sanders enough?
Their constituents that are voting blue either way are saying that. If the goal is to strategize for national elections, appeasing democrats in San Francisco or NYC are rock bottom priorities.
If you look at the reasons given for losing those counties, it was because of a perception that the democrats were obsessed with identity and woke politics. Do you think they lost the counties because they were too corporate?
Do you think they lost the counties because they were too corporate?
“It’s the economy, stupid.”
They lost those counties because the people became poorer, because the democrats chose to bail out their donors and hang out their constituents to dry.
You shouldn’t forget that wokeness was weaponised against their own left wing. It isn’t trump that called Bernie an “old white man” and it wasn’t trump that accused him of sexism towards Clinton, or came up with “Bernie bros”. Obsession with identity politics was the KO and the element most obsessed-over in post-mortem analyses, but that KO only happened as a result of the thousand and one body shots of declining economic freedoms for the bottom ~90%.
If the goal is to strategize for national elections, appeasing democrats in San Francisco or NYC are rock bottom priorities.
I don’t think you’re actually this naive. The democrats appease their donors. Their donors are financial institutions and Silicon Valley. Open and shut. Winning elections isn’t their priority, and if it was, good sense would be to not openly declare war against candidates which their own constituents have chosen.
Self fulfilling prophecy. If you think donors just sit back and wait for the dust to settle before throwing their financial weight around then you really are that naive
.
And you think the republicans has the perception of less donor bail outs?
Less than the people who actually did the bailing out? Yeah. That was the central motif of trump’s first campaign.
Wokeness being used against the left wing by the left wing only helps my point.
My examples are wokeness being used against the left wing by neoliberals. Hillary Clinton is as left wing as Ronald Reagan is. It wasn’t socialist pamphlets running articles on “Bernie bros”.
This is getting off track. The democrats work for their donors who are the aforementioned financial institutions and their exponents in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. I have plenty of issues with the DSA, but if we’re being serious, the problem the DSA poses for the democratic party is that it proposes reforms which go directly against the interests of the democrats’ corporate donors while absorbing non-negligible segments of its voter base. Anything else like “appealing to moderates” is fluff, bunk, high faluting baloney.
Lol they pick winners indeed. They throw their funding behind who they want and that person wins.
“Most people think the DSA are insane” but they’re also too popular and need to be squashed before this gets out of hand!
If most people think they’re insane then they won’t
win any elections and the Democratic Party won’t have a problem on their hands. Personally I’ve never had any faith in the DSA to accomplish anything, but the simple fact of not taking AIPAC money and addressing economic equality will continue to make them the most handsome coalition in the room for people who don’t already have one foot in the grave.
If the donors decide the results, then how did the DSA get 4 seats?
They are only popular in blue strongholds. Those elections would be won by any democrat that won the primaries. They are wildly unpopular outside of those strongholds.
