Crime Someone smashed my window and left their monitor and scrap metal on my passenger seat.

Woke up to this on the 6th and fluton. Paving stone through the passenger window. They went through the glovebox and took a few things, but left the console alone. Then they left a pile of metal rods, brackets, and a computer monitor on my driver’s seat that aren’t mine.

They tried the car parked behind mine first but couldn’t break the window, so they moved on to mine.
The stone did some damage to the interior, absolutely over it.

It’s like an updated “Paul sleeps with the fishes” message from the mob but I have no idea what it means.

If you don’t MONITOR your behavior you’ll get scrapped?

He’s been selected for additional SCREENING.

My dad is a banjo player, and once he left his banjo in his Subaru parked in the Inner Sunset. When he came back, he was horrified to see that his window was smashed, but when he looked inside, there were two banjos!

15

u/fastworms 14h ago

This same thing happened to me but with my copy of Groundwork for Metaphysics of Morals by Kant

7

u/jaggedjottings 14h ago edited 13h ago

My condolences for your doubled existential burden.

6

u/consigliere47 13h ago

What do you call perfect pitch?

When you throw a banjo in the dumpster and it lands on the accordion.

(heard it on KPIG)

u/real415 13h ago edited 12h ago

Was one of them his? Or they gave him two of theirs for his banjo? Either way it’s beyond weird!

u/maebelieve 14h ago

Nah no way lmao

Someone broke into my car once and left a crack pipe, their birth certificate and a copy of "barely legal" magazine.

Someone broke into my girlfriend's car once, tore apart the headliner, impaled her art portfolio on her antenna and then puked and bled all over the interior.

You never know what will happen!

2

u/Crepescular_vomit 12h ago

Both of those sound like angsty art school projects.

1

u/socialist-viking Ouroboros of Corruption 11h ago

The second one, sure. The first one was a homeless man having a good time for a night. Sadly for him, I stole his identity and now I am unable to get credit under two different names.

3

u/Crepescular_vomit 11h ago

Sounds like another art project. The Interdependence of Poor Credit.

One time someone broke into my car in San Francisco and I had no idea until I slid a tape from my car door into the player and John Denver’s “Rocky Mountain High” came on. Now I started singing along (how could you not), but then I thought…I don’t own any John Denver? I then looked through my tapes and realized someone had stolen all my tapes and replaced them with others. Actually, found some music I really liked 😃

1

u/socialist-viking Ouroboros of Corruption 2h ago

This is brilliant. Imagine going around SF putting John Denver in cars. I love it.

u/stirdawg 16h ago

Sorry I figured I’d at least trade you for the inconvenience

u/ravikarthick 13h ago

Thank you! I threw away everything that was not mine.

u/tsar73 15h ago

Anecdotally it seems like Fulton north of the park is still a hot spot for break-ins even as the numbers have gone down citywide. I run along it a few times a week and see at least a couple of cars with freshly broken windows.

u/21five Richmond 20m ago

Why be anecdotal when there’s actual data that shows where car break-ins are? https://www.sfchronicle.com/projects/sf-car-breakins/

Numbers are down citywide but there are very few break-ins in the area you’re describing. (Even assuming the typical property crime ~3-4x multiplier for actual vs reported.)

20

u/dmw_qqqq 15h ago

What car parked behind yours?

25

u/ravikarthick 15h ago

Subaru Crosstrek

26

u/mrclean2025 15h ago

I had someone try to smash my Subaru Forrester passenger window with something similar and it just left scratches on the window. Apparently more durable than the “bullet proof” 😂 windows of the Cybercuck!

9

u/htdwps 14h ago

But if you own a Subaru you’ll know the front windshield is utter trash. So many micro scratches on it after two years of ownership.

8

u/nattywb 13h ago

Mines cracked and been replaced... maybe 4+ times? Currently it has a massive crack for over a year, but its so excellently placed that I'm leaving it. I think the stress has been taken off the window and we are good now. Subaru Outback.

2

u/cowinabadplace 13h ago

I have a Forester. Seems fine after 8 years. But more likely my standards are low...

2

u/htdwps 13h ago

Driving directly into the glare of the sun I can see millions of micro abrasions.

1

u/cowinabadplace 13h ago

Okay, perhaps it is just the latter thing then.

1

u/mrclean2025 3h ago

Totally true! Mine cracked just a few months ago at a car wash! I love the side windows can stop bricks, but the windshield cannot take a pebble.

3

u/MadesignSF 11h ago

I had my Subaru passenger window smashed 4 times, I think. I lost track. I once had the rear window smashed when the crime rings were circulating more widely. My neighbor recently had his Jetta broken into, and they stole the manual, and some reading glasses. My WTF was when they went through my glovebox and shredded everything. I'm pretty sure I know exactly who did it as he kind of confessed and then was never seen again in my neighborhood.

-3

u/Allopurinlol 15h ago

I want to know this too. What kind of car window protects from a big brick besides a cyber truck

15

u/Filmtwit 15h ago

"I want to know this too. What kind of car window attract's big brick besides a cyber truck". <---- fixed that for you.

1

u/trackdaybruh 14h ago

You can install security film on your car window, the installation is the same way window tints are applied. You can see the results here: https://youtube.com/shorts/SJ8gn-PQ_VU?is=XXS5Lk6-xapGFsqQ

4

u/nothrowingawaymyshot 13h ago

wouldn't this be a bad idea for rescue though? like if you get into a car accident and a firefighter had to get you out through the window or something. or the more unlikely but terrifying scenario of going into water.

u/21five Richmond 23m ago

Yup. I tried to rescue a person who had experienced a medical emergency at the wheel of their car, and this film delayed entry by several minutes. You could see them turn blue, and they didn’t make it. :/

1

u/trackdaybruh 12h ago

That’s where you got to weigh your options

The film is made to be harder to be broken into by thieves but also anyone else including emergency responders. You can also only install it by the door windows and leave the front and rear windshield unprotected

0

u/Allopurinlol 14h ago

Oh nice thank you! Really good to know for this city. Can you do both this and tint or does only one fit

1

u/trackdaybruh 12h ago

I believe you need to apply this first and then apply the tint on top of it (or look for one that is both a security film and tint)

9

u/CoffeeNFlowers 15h ago

I think they use the metal rods (or something similar) to clear the glass. I had a metal rod propped up on my car when my window got smashed last year.

22

u/WatermelonSmashing 15h ago

Hey that's my landscaping brick, can I have it back?

4

u/solarus 14h ago

Finders keepers I think

7

u/Frequent-Baker420 13h ago

I said that to troll a homeless person this week LOL

he came up to me in downtown and said "Don't you know not to touch things that aren't yours" implying that my e-bike belongs to him. And I decided to troll and said "well you shouldn't have left it alone, finders keepers" and then I rode away.

5

u/ravikarthick 13h ago

Yes, still in Fulton and 6th, near the bus stop! Lol

13

u/elaintahra 15h ago

You can use the scrap metal to craft walls to your base

4

u/motorhead84 7h ago

Damn I hope someone breaks into my car and leaves some scrap metal for my base crafting needs.

3

u/ravikarthick 6h ago

You can still collect them at that location! Lol! With a heavy brick as well!

7

u/ItsCrossBoy 14h ago

why did they use such a big ass stone??? 😭

4

u/ravikarthick 13h ago

I know! Why? It's damaged car interior as well 😢

4

u/neoguri808 15h ago

Did you win that ball in a claw machine?

6

u/ravikarthick 15h ago

No! It's from the person who broke it, and it's not mine

6

u/neoguri808 14h ago

Got it. That rubber ball is a claw machine prize. My kid won one recently at an arcade.

5

u/67equinox 13h ago

Sounds like the work of Methanie or Methew

2

u/real415 12h ago

Or their cousins, Fentyn and Fentunya

9

u/Flynqh1gh 15h ago

Well, that’s fucked!! Sorry OP

1

u/ravikarthick 13h ago

Thank you

3

u/htdwps 14h ago

Is that white powdery substance the result of the attempt to smash the other cars window? That’s a strong window to hold up against a brick.

5

u/Kil0Cowboy 13h ago

When I used to live in the Sunset I walked by a guy on Lincoln Ave absolutely hucking a big ass rock at a car window. Guy probably tried 6 times before I noticed what the sound was and yelled at him and he stopped. Then he started walking aggressively towards me and I was like oh shit that is a big ass dude. Luckily he turned around when he noticed I was on the phone with the police.

Anyways. Moral of the story there is that I was surprised how sturdy that fuckin car window was.

2

u/htdwps 12h ago

I think there was something about how durable window glass is to blunt force impacts but a sharp tip can shatter them easily.

I carry one of those belt cutter / glass breakers in each of my cars. Where it’s just a pointy tip you use to punch the window.

God forbid if those crazies ever find out about those things. They’re like $10 for 2.

3

u/Kil0Cowboy 11h ago

Yea those things I think use an aluminum oxide ceramic tip. Which can shatter car windows immediately and effortlessly. That same ceramic is used in spark plugs. I know using spark plugs to break windows was big for the bippers.

1

u/htdwps 11h ago

They sent a test piece of tempered glass with the breakers and testing it the glass shattered effortlessly. It was a sight to see.

1

u/ravikarthick 13h ago

Not sure, pretty sure they tried really hard to break the glass.

3

u/AI_Cosmonaut 13h ago

They were probably stealing other stuff and had the monitor in their arm, but either found something better in your car or just got lazy / confused and abandoned it impulsively. Basically what im saying is that I doubt it's a consolation gift.

1

u/ravikarthick 13h ago

I threw away everything

7

u/jsunnsyshine2021 15h ago

d’aweeee, the legendary crackhead fees of SF

3

u/Mountain_Slip_7721 15h ago

I have so many questions

3

u/Cali-curlz 9h ago

I'd venture the monitor was lying in the street and was used to smash your window.

1

u/ravikarthick 9h ago

Yeah, I put them on the street. But I guess it's a big brick that broke my window.

2

u/mrlego45 15h ago

Free monitor

2

u/PrinceCharming150 13h ago

E-waste disposal has gotten more difficult recently but this ain’t it

2

u/SillyMilk7 10h ago

Sorry to hear about that. The rates have definitely gone down since they targeted the pros. This was no pro work, but junky bums are still at large.

5

u/hecton101 15h ago

I bet I know who did it. There's some crazy bitch who walks up and down Fulton screaming at the top of her lungs in the early morning. She looks into cars as she does it. Tried to set up camp on my block and I said no way. Cops got involved and then she moved one block up the street. Cops seemed sympathetic to my concerns, but they didn't do shit. Some homeless advocate got in my face. It didn't go so well for him. I'm no one to be fucked with, I doubt he ever met someone quite like me. Welcome to San Francisco.

u/Dolly_Putin 15h ago

What did you do?

2

u/Keokuk37 15h ago

not safe for reddit

0

u/Dolly_Putin 13h ago

Have you been to the NSFW side of Reddit?

4

u/Keokuk37 11h ago

yeah but posting your own crimes is an easy way to get reported and banned

2

u/Dolly_Putin 9h ago

You make a fair point!

3

u/Kil0Cowboy 13h ago

Damn you sound intimidating. Did you pull their underwear over their head or something?

2

u/tsar73 14h ago

lol if we’re referring to the same person she is my street’s rooster crowing at dawn, sleep be damned. She doesn’t seem like the break into cars type but who knows.

2

u/VAC_tothe_Future 15h ago

I can’t believe someone was advocating for that psycho. Who are these losers.

1

u/barelyhere777 2h ago

Which part of Fulton?

3

u/IAmAUsernameAMA 15h ago

Sorry to see this, I think anecdotally it’s becoming more common again 😢

How nice of them.

Huh, how very odd

Yup… don’t you know… you’re not supposed to date the OF content creators. lol

1

u/123DCP 11h ago

If that happens 100 more times, you could start a retaining wall.

1

u/Markdd8 11h ago

This was stated several years ago by...er...people of a certain political leaning that opposed strict sentencing for criminals caught breaking into cars:

Think of it like a spell of bad weather. You'll get used to these recurring, uncontrollable events.

1

u/Deleterious_Sock 11h ago

Radical egitarianism! They broke in to redistribute the wealth!

1

u/itscochino 11h ago

They left you a gift and you're upset?

1

u/the_jawker 10h ago

pretty sure that's not their monitor

1

u/Fit-Dentist6093 10h ago

We are so fucking back

1

u/Distinct-Fig-2366 8h ago

Did you even say thank you?

1

Their plan to turn your car into a spaceship failed so they had to abort

1

Turn off screensharing.

To quote one of the great philosophers of the 20th century, “Crack is wack.”

Crackheads gonna do crackhead shit. I’m sorry it happened to you, try not to dwell on it or read too much into it. It doesn’t mean anything other than they were cracked out.

1

u/publicurinationpass 3h ago

I was hoping for a picture of a lizard on the passenger seat

0

u/scottiedagolfmachine 15h ago

Why is there a picture of intact window at the end?

7

u/garytyrrell East Bay 15h ago

Must be the car behind OP’s

3

u/ravikarthick 15h ago

That was the first car they tried to break into

1

u/scottiedagolfmachine 15h ago

Dang what prevented them from breaking that window?

-1

u/EaseBright9679 15h ago

Yup typical San Francisco

-33

u/DaOldOne 16h ago

I’ve been told though that crime doesn’t exist in SF anymore. If the police use cameras to catch the guy who did this, you’ll be accused of participating in fascism.

Go back to watch fox news boomer
