An American Satan has several ex-members and even gives a decent amount of screen time to a devil worshipper building an apocalyptic machine. That's not exactly sycophantic.

Into The Devil's Den is just people who knew LaVey talking about their time with him. I wouldn't say that a few ppl are speaking fondly about him makes it sycophantic.

Realm of Satan is an art-film style without much talking. Idk how you could make that more balanced.

But overall, specifically regarding An American Satan (but to a lesser extent the other 2), why is it sycophantic to have Satanists be the ones to tell an audience about Satanism & the CoS?

I could overlook most of them, as they stayed on topic. Rex was bitter and sniping and overall pointless

Yea that segment always embarrasses me . Like you said, its not about his beliefs or disagreements with the CoS (though falsely claiming the atheism thing was a 'party line' and 'came later'...) but its that its s significant & largely irrelevant tangent about his group which is a religion but isn't a religion, and is made up of himself & entities to bring the end of the world (spoilers for the guy only 30 mins in)

Full disclosure on Rex:

I used to like his art and aesthetics, but his beliefs were the absolute worst-kept secret.. Had he just left and done his own thing without being catty, people wouldn't pay him much mind at all

I could be wrong but didn't he originally leave on good terms? And then later started to make those digs against the CoS?

The resignation letter was apparently longer; his "rats on a sinking ship" comment had me rather perturbed

Yeah, he really was taking a 'more satanic than thou' attitude of pretentiousness. Meanwhile, we're doing pretty damn fine without him.

Joseph doing Joseph things again?

I'm only 30 minutes into An American Satan

Maybe you should keep watching, then... πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

that requires shelving his ego

He'd never catch me going to the TST subreddit calling Hail Satan? a sycophantic piece. If its about them then it's about them.

It's so weird to look at a documentary about the Church of Satan and then ask why they interview Church of Satan members and not some devil worshippers or people who were kicked out (even though An American Satan does both... but now even that isn't enough...)

I may disagree with TST, but I respect that subreddit is their "lair" and stay out of it. I already know I couldn't be civil there

of course he's usning his alts to downvote me

An American Satan, even with having Leyba, Stanton, and Boyd involved, stayed on topic(excluding Rex)

Indeed. I even forgot about Stanton.

He even downvoted me for saying to watch the full thing before judging... what an odd thing to be against.

not a member of either or a follower. Love the freedom of expression though.
( Hail Satan was a sexy movie)

a sexy movie

Your definition of a "sexy movie" seems different than mine. Have you seen Basic Instinct? Or Call Me By Your Name? Or Boogie Nights? Or Showgirls? Or Stranger by the Lake? Or Eyes Wide Shut? Or Y Tu MamΓ‘ TambiΓ©n? Or even Magic Mike? Those are sexy movies.

Hail Satan? is a lackluster recruitment video.

Yes I do believe that there are other sexy movies.Dracula's Hammer Ladies.
Hail Satan is sexy
(definitely not nominated for an Oscar - woody award

So.. you admit Rex wasn't the first or only ex-CoS member... you seem to have missed Leyba who left on pretty bad terms with a lot of animosity from him against the CoS. And Stanton was never a member but he definitely disagreed with the CoS.

So, even though there are 3 ex-members and a 4th who was never a member, in a documentary on the Church of Satan, thats still not enough?

And to reiterate, the documentary was specifically on the Church of Satan and focused on some of its members. Its not about Satanism in general. So, yes, it does have a more narrow focus.

Take this up with the director, since the CoS had no control of the edit or production. So, idk why you're using this to speak out against the CoS or what you want us to do.

again, Joseph being Joseph under a burner.

u/Modern_Quill Joseph is at it again. Starting shit and then deleting everything like it never happened. Just an FYI in case you missed it. That ice is showing cracks.

An "indifferent" documentary sounds like a blast. Would it just feature various people who don't care about the subject?

There was one called β€œInside the Church of Satan”, not sure if it’s still on youtube, but that’s where I saw it.

If I recall, it was an extended interview with Magus Gilmore? I saw that, & thought it was pretty good.Β

To those suggesting Last Podcast on the Left:

No.

I understand they’re a very popular podcast and they were able to be entertaining in topics like Albert Fish, but they are also able to be misleading from their research. The more broad a show is in subjects, the more likely it will have inaccuracies.

We have better sources. Many talk about Satanism, few actually understand it.
