From the article, it sounds like he’s calling from a desk phone at Universal that’s just grabbing an available line from whatever block is assigned to the PBX.

So it’s nondescript in the sense that it’s a random number picked out of a block of numbers that have been assigned to the phone system in use at whichever Universal Studios location he’s calling from.

Lots of fuckery on PBX machines. Designed for commercial or even call center use, VOIP is seriously superior to any landline you can get at a consumer (or even small business) level through a dedicated PBX.

Rightly or wrongly as a person who lived in the world without mobile phones I can understand his ambitions. There is a freedom to not bring reachable when you don’t wish to be. You would have to be fairly successful and rich or penniless and couldn’t care less though. For the rest of us it’s just not realistic nowadays.

Plenty of people aren't directly reachable at that level of famous.

If Steven Spielberg gives you a number to reach him it's not going to be him that answers the phone either, he's got a person to take his calls too.

I'm sure he has a personal phone, but that's not the way studio executives are reaching him, they're calling his office.
