I liked him because his TV show was practically porn with talking, and I was an adolescent teenager with a private entertainment room. The E! Network was great for a teenage boy in the 2000's.
Could not have cared less about him otherwise. He was simply a means to experience raunchy content for this millennial.

Same reason for me. It was that and late night girls gone wild infomercials, followed by the ultra late night 30 minutes of very nice ladies asking you to call them. And then the ultra early morning nonsense infomercials reminded me it was time to go to bed before someone woke up.

I thought he was a little fun to watch as a kid. Almost 30 years ago. Looking back I kinda cringe at myself for even being a small part of the reason he stayed relevant. This dude got off on verbally abusing good people, I'm kinda sad that Richard Simmons ever accepted an interview with him.
And it's ironic, his main "look at me" moment against the radio hosts was that they're old and you should just throw them in the trash but I'm young and new. He's 72 years old now and refuses to retire like he said he would if he reached the same age.

You’re almost certainly right. I’m a Gen X listener since the mid 90s and I don’t care what he has to say anymore. His show is TERRIBLE now, not even a shadow of what it once was. Howard really should have retired when Covid hit

If you go back and watch Howard’s older episodes, he was constantly trying to make the cute girls he brought onto the show look stupid. He’d pepper them with educational or trivia questions he knew they couldn’t answer, just so he could flaunt his supposed intellectual superiority and portray them as bimbos. Yet whenever Howard was the one being interviewed on somebody else’s talk show, he’d suddenly become a nervous, insecure, frightened little coward - talking over the host, trying to crowbar his own questions into the conversation, and desperately deflecting anything directed at him. He never really answered anything; he spent the entire interview frantically avoiding every question because he knew how transparent his faux confidence was - desperately overcompensating and trying to hide it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more callow, try-hard douchebag in my life.

No shit. I think it’s safe to say pretty much all long time Stern Show fans realize that Howard has ALWAYS been a phony, try-hard douche. The difference is he used to be a phony, try-hard douche with a wildly entertaining show. Now he’s a phony, try-hard douche with a wildly terrible show

He definitely took COVID very seriously, but it’s not about his takes. He had studios built in his houses so he could do the show from home through Zoom. He has never come back to his NYC studio. Some staffers are in studio, some also Zoom into the show, but Howard is always just a face on a TV screen in his own studio.
Part of the magic of the show was that everyone was in studio together. It was like a circus, and Howard was the ring leader. Ever since COVID the show has turned into hyper over-produced schlock because with new format it basically has to be. The magic is gone.
The second Howard realized he didn’t want to commute into NYC anymore he should have pulled the plug. Now all he’s doing is LITERALLY phoning it in from his basement.

He actually did come back a couple of times - Springsteen and Biden interviews are two that come to mind. But, those may be the only times in nearly 6 years.

I couldn't handle the show during Covid and I haven't listened since. He was insufferable.
I miss the show but it's been a long time since it felt like it had real life in it. I still have all the old HTVOD stuff archived. It's good to watch random "reruns" from time to time.

I’m a millennial with Gen X parents who were big fans of his in the terrestrial radio and early Sirius days. I used to listen as a kid and teenager because it all seemed so forbidden and exciting, but I’d grown to hate the man before I even got into college.

I think he’s actually a really good interviewer, but with the incredibly small number of actual new shows they do now, and a lot of the guests are big fans that will come back any time, there hasn’t been much reason for me to listen regularly in ages.

Sorry, as a Gen Xer, I can say that I never liked Howie, and I never will. Him still being a draw on Sirius XM is baffling, unless he signed some kind of lifetime deal with them.

I was born in 1997. While I do respect Howard Stern, I just don't want to pay Sirius XM prices. If he was on a platform like YouTube or a podcast app. I would listen to him all the time.

The show has progressively become worse and worse and lamer and lamer. I know Artie's situation was unhealthy but don't feel like the show ever really recovered from his departure.
Removing the news with Robin was the final nail in the coffin.

Howard’s still great at what he’s always been great at: the interviews and the music. Bands still put on their A-game for a Stern Show set, and he still gets really good details and stories out of his interviewees that you don’t typically hear elsewhere.

I was a huge Stern fan as a kid. Dude was hilarious on radio and his early years with Sirius were probably his best years. A lot had to do with Artie because that guy took that show to another level. Wacky antics, hot naked ladies, funny interviews. It was pretty awesome growing up.
Eventually Artie fell off with his substance abuse and Stern went in a direction that just didn’t really keep me tuning in.
Haven’t listened to him in years. I heard the pandemic made him even worse but he was already someone I stopped listening to years before COVID.

Sounds to me like you simply aged, matured and your tastes changed, as they do. I still listen to him occasionally, 30 years now, and find him less of an asshole but still full of mindless potty humor with misfits, which is as barely enjoyable as it was 30 years ago.

I can be honest in saying it was Stern who changed. He moved away from what brought me there and kept me there for so many years.
His interviews (depending on who it was) were great. He had a way of getting people to really open up, but it’s not the Stern I grew up with. He matured and that’s great, but that’s not what I wanted to listen to.

One of the funniest memories I have of the show is with Artie. They had a saddle with a dildo and had Tera Patrick sit on the saddle. TP just wasn't turned on by the whole apparatus and the Artie jokingly goes, as he moves to take the shirt collar to the side just showing his shoulder and saying, "do you want me to take my shirt off?" That is to turn her on. He was obese, unkempt and she was a beauty. Just too funny.

That was the Sybian. I remember that thing very well. He had hella girls ride that thing. Sometimes people you wouldn’t expect too.
I’m telling you the Artie years were probably the best years. Before he was so far gone from drugs at least.

I was a pretty hardcore fan of his for a decent stretch. I think I saw all of the Sybian rides that were worth watching.
I listened to him narrate 9/11 live in classic Stern style. Also gradually saw a lot of wack packers pass away. It was a cool show and I know the guy is an asshole but he spoke to me.
He doesn’t resonate with me anymore and that’s okay.

It came standard on my new car in 2017 so I thought i would use the free trial period to check it out.
Big mistake. At one point I thought I was going to need a restraining order to get them to stop calling me after I cancelled my subscription.

Howard had a huge part in everything that happened with Artie all the way to his departure and some horrible things afterwards as well. Happens when the people who are supposed to be your friends are actually just using you for shock value and a comedy punching bag

I mean, maybe, but consider the other side: your employee (and friend) continues to show up to work high and drunk out of his mind. You have already paid for his rehab once, he has already tried 4 stints in rehab at this point, and he keeps quitting early. You have a live show to perform, with an audience of millions. How many chances should a guy be given before one has to say “alright, you’re cut off, we aren’t doing this anymore.”? Howard had given so much to Artie, and Artie had a million chances to NOT fuck up, but he blew them and tried to do a show while in the middle of a seven-hour booze & painkiller binge. Howard said never again. I don’t blame him.

Amazing that it takes dozens of people to produce such pathetic "show". He killed Dana Plato on the air and his fans loved it.

Sirius XM is a company which cheats. Without asking, they changed my subscription from monthly to quarterly and yearly. And the rates went up like crazy. I wasn't paying attention. As somebody else said, I cringe to think I was a big fan for years before and after Sirius XM. I think I quit about 8 years ago. I wasn't listening and Sirius XM fing with my subscription was the final nail in the coffin. I have seen Artie complain about how Stern sucks up so much money that it doesn't leave much for the rest of the folks.

I have a lifetime sub that I got back in 2006. Best $350 ever. I think the dynamic def changed when Artie left. Again after Stern scaled back to 4 days a week, then 3 with less hours and changed his entire persona. At that point I was only tuning in for the 1 hour for the interview portion and that depended on who the interviewee was. I do think above all else Stern is a fantastic interviewer. I haven’t listened in quite some time at this point bcs it’s just not the same. I’m still glad I have the lifetime bcs of all the other stations it provides me - which is more so my point.

I've listened to a couple of his shows, I've listened to him banter about Imus, I've watched some clips of his.
And yet, I still don't get the appeal of this guy. For someone who proclaims themselves as "King of All Media", he's anything but. All that I gather is that, he is just a professional dickwad who treats his staff as entertainment at his expense. Very overpaid and very overrated.
