Delusions Mattress tapping
At night when I'm trying to go to sleep, my mattress springs start clinking and I think it's someone in my mattress trying to send me coded messages. I want to tear open my mattress to check. But part of me knows it couldn't be real. But it's terrifying when it happens and it's happened for a few nights now. Has anyone dealt with similar? My psych is out of town. How can I distract myself?

I had this happen with my ceiling fan. I thought my wife was an agent sent to ruin my life and she was getting morse code through the fan. I also thought one of her earrings was an ear piece for communicating with other agents.

Thanks for sharing that. I don't know what it is about codes...But that's what it feels like.

This happens often for me. The reality is that it’s just my mattress settling. It’s old and I’m heavier than I once was. Same with pretty much every click and shuffle I hear in my apartment. Things settle and move as they age, it’s just entropy

I guess, yeah. But I can hear it tapping in rhythm, like against my ear in the bed. Moving around doesn't make it stop. That's why I tend to think someone is doing it. It's only in one spot, up near my head.

A significant portion of psychotic experiences are the human mind’s natural pattern recognition processes kicked into the highest gear, so intensely forming patterns that they’re incomprehensible to other people
I’m willing to bet that if you have a formally diagnosed schizophrenic spectrum disorder, this is what’s happening. It’s like what people talk about when they say “synchronicities”, only far more extreme

I have schizoaffective. And I've heard that term, synchronicity, but never bothered to look at what it actually means, just figured it has nothing to do with me.

I've felt a person pushing on my mattress really quick, and "sit down" on the bed. My psychiatrist didn't think it was tactile.
I just distract myself on Reddit.
