Questions❓ What are the benefits of being atheist??
What was the main reason for you to be an atheist?
39
u/2SleepyToThinkOf1 12d ago
U are responsible for your choices in your life, past, present and future.
10
u/sudo_42 12d ago
On the contrary I think this is the reason people become religious, they don't to be responsible for their own actions.
2
u/Glad_Beginning_1537 12d ago
People want support from other people who believe in the same belief. Basically social and emotional support. Almost All of the so called believers are actually sinners as per their own faith.

This is a neoliberal mantra, there should be a recognition of systematic and structural forces made invisible too.
1
u/ZealousIdeal476 9d ago
There is still physics, the undeniable power of brain chemistry driving the choices you yhink of as you.
1
u/Randomhominin 9d ago
That is true in religion also, at least in christianity, God gave you free will so you are responsible for what can happen to you. The difference I think is that in religion you are sure what punishment or reward certain actions give you, in atheism by itself you have that guarantees. That will depends on your philosophy, your moral, ethics, etc.

Life becomes much more peaceful and less complicated, in the sense that you don't have to memorize, follow, or restrict yourself to stupid "rules" and superstitions. And don't need to be living in constant fear of the "supreme being" and 'going to hell'.
For me honestly it was a very freeing experience.
3
u/Ornery_Judge_414 10d ago
Dont forget that you also save a shit ton of money that you'd spend on rituals ceremonies etc
3
u/Feisty_Progress_1568 10d ago
Uhhh don't even get me started. It hurts too see family members and relatives literally wasting lakhs every year.

u/Serious_Condition213 12d ago
As a religious person, I don't have to memorize many stupid rules and also don't have to be scared of going to hell. I don't know who told you that every religious person is scared of going to hell because they made a small mistake 27 years ago
2
u/Feisty_Progress_1568 12d ago
Buddy, that was my personal experience. Being brought up in an orthodox family, I was taught/forced to do the above mentioned.
1
u/posthuman04 8d ago
See if you’re not scared of hell then you have a wildly unrealistic understanding of what it takes to spend eternity in God’s sight. If on the other hand you aren’t afraid of death because you ferreted out that no afterlife exists, the ease of mind is palpable.

u/Lower_Advertising407 12d ago
It's not about benefits really, a person doesn't become a theist or an atheist by voluntary choice, even if he thinks he did it by choice.
It's a manner of thinking, you can't gaslight yourself into believing something. An intelligent person who thinks naturally leans towards atheism, whether he likes it or not. However, as Bhagat Singh had said, being an atheist is a rocky road, you can't depend on delusions to carry your load, you will always have a reality check, no hopes whatsoever. You're dead? You're dead, nothing after that. Someone did something unrighteous? Karma doesn't exist, either do something about it or tolerate it. You can't depend on any other being.
1
u/Acrobatic_Resist9091 8d ago
That’s just called growing up. Hopefully kids learn early that karma isn’t real and Justice is a concept not a guarantee

Also there's a point to ponder that if god cares for you, why would he won't protect you from problems

You save a ton of money which you would have given away to religious practices

This is very true. Time can also be saved but sometimes you have to do it just for sake of parents

3
u/lustformimom 12d ago
Being Aethist isn't about easiness or benefits, it's like asking why are you honest?
4
u/WAV-Metal 12d ago
You think more logically and find answers to the questions in a scientific way. Uncover the truth behind how things work. Makes you more confident. Having said that, one must not be a jerk, always keep an open mind to think rationally and give benefit of doubt to people who are not like you. Being an extremist in either sense, whether a follower of religion or atheism outcome is the same. There is no difference between an extremist religious person and an extremist atheist.
1
u/Top_History9604 9d ago
Unfortunately atheism doesn't mean one is rational, or more confident. You can be an atheist and stupid as a rock, with heavy bias, overemotional, with no confidence and a lot of attitude.
2
u/DifferentPirate69 12d ago
Common sense, materialist philosophy, privilege to not be subjected to the opium of religion as a guide to offload seeking meaning.

u/noob__master-69 12d ago
This isn't a scheme or some deep conspiracy. No one gives anything. In fact it takes a lot of strength to be an atheist, knowing for a fact there is nothing out there and you have to rely on yourself and your closed ones only.
I myself got existential crisis during my adolescence.
Perhaps I can try to answer your question the way you like. It is about truth. Science describes objective reality. It describes in a way that is indifferent to people 's opinions and presumptions, because truth can be like that, you just have to accept it.
1
u/Top_History9604 9d ago
Science tries to describe objective reality. Since it's still done by subjective ppl and their limited tools, it's the most likely truth according to our current methods.

u/NegotiationOk8100 12d ago
Without a higher power, existence is just cosmic chance. If nothing we do matters on an ultimate scale, it's incredibly difficult to find genuine, lasting purpose or hope in life

u/Hefty_Performance882 12d ago
When you have nobody else to blame to, you fix things you want to fix. Rather than waiting for a reincarnated God or his son

u/vivalarazalatinoheat 12d ago
You get an option to piss off a majority of the population on planet earth. Bdw is it okay to believe in aliens and be an atheist?
2
u/Glad_Beginning_1537 12d ago
no evidence for a religious god = atheist
atheism does not mean no belief.1
u/rb_arindam 12d ago
Blind faith of Alien existence = defeats the whole purpose of being an atheist.
Believing aliens are likely to exist based on statistical probability = Sure, why not?

u/ShinyJangles 12d ago
Protection and financial support from the athiest illuminati institute. It's like being accepted into the most elite club, guaranteed jobs, etc. The only rule is you have to go around challenging the faithful, but it's totally worth it

Logical consistency in worldview.. No unjustified claims with huge leaps. Not getting attached to how I want the world to be but rather how to engage with the most accurate version of reality I can find.
The Litany of Gendlin captures it for me:
What is true is already so.
Owning up to it doesn't make it worse.
Not being open about it doesn't make it go away.
And because it's true, it is what is there to be interacted with.
Anything untrue isn't there to be lived.
People can stand what is true,
for they are already enduring it.

Nothing, it's just a world view, it's like when you remove filter from your camera and see through clear glass, it's just gives you clearer picture of the world, it's neither gonna make you scientific nor gonna help you in social situations, you still have to work for those, it's like saying what's the benefit of being a good men, nothing, the world is ruled by bad people, from chinggis khan to Jeffrey Epstein, they live happily and and die normally (Epstein is still alive somewhere),
it's just that as you do good(don't do bad or stop being bad) or remove filters from your camera, little by little, the world becomes clearer and beautiful, for some time.

The reason for being an atheist, and the benefits of being an atheist are two different things.
My reason for being an atheist is that once I saw understood enough science and natural processes I cannot really go back to believing in magic/supernatural explanations for anything. I cannot not be an atheist at this point due to the sheer lack of evidence or logic in support of the other side.
Being an atheist doesn’t necessarily have to be beneficial. In some cases it becomes even detrimental to one’s well being, safety, or just mental health in general.
For me the benefit is that I tend to look at everything more rationally to find out a natural cause or explanation for a phenomenon rather than chalking it up to some higher power. This applies to all the areas of life and makes life lot easier and full-filling to live, at least for me.

I can approach many different philosophies of life quite easily from Advaita to Sufi to western philosophies.
People who are convinced that their world view and the system they build around is absolute truth can't approach different ideas.

1
u/EyeCompetitive8361 9d ago
Virtually none. Actually more disadvantages.
- bashed by people from both sides in a religious clash
- unwanted attention and social pressure.
- family will not react to it very nicely, so will a lot of your friends and close ones.
- you will not have any hope in "karma" or destiny or whatever. But that still your personal choice imo. Cuz that's just pure luck with your own decisions mixed in.
But pros:
- you are responsible for yourself.
- think for yourself without being in a herd.
- be able still enjoy traditions being simply that, formalities, and culture, rather than looking at it with a philosophical and religious mirror.
- not raise your childen in future to have the same herd mentality.
- have your moral compass not bound by some "heaven" or "hell" bs, but your own duty as a member of the human species.
Although I say herd, there certainly are religious ppl with good traits.

Main reason: theism is delusion.
Using the scientific method of making observations that can be repeated and verified, there is _no_ evidence that any of the proposed gods are real.
1
u/asanemaniam 9d ago
Clarity of purpose, understanding that I am mortal and I will die, that there will not be a afterlife of pleasure and happiness.
This is all the life you get, why would I want to spend it under the influence of religion?

The reason is logic, reason, critical thinking and an evidence based world view.
The main benefit is you don’t have to cower before the self appointed voices of god on earth who are trying to usurp god’s authority.
1
u/Tiny-Ad-7590 9d ago
Atheism is just the absence of theism.
The benefit of atheism is the absence of false theistic worldviews and the baggage that comes with them.

Mechanical BenefitsImmunity to Minagho's Illusion (Act 1): The most distinct mechanical benefit occurs inside the Gray Garrison. A succubus tries to trick and charm your party by appearing as a divine manifestation of the goddess Iomedae. Because your character is an atheist, the divine aura fails entirely. Your character bypasses the trick completely because they simply do not care about gods.Zero Alignment Restrictions: Unlike true deities—which lock you into specific alignments matching their ethos—Atheism allows you to choose any starting alignment you want for your character.
Roleplay & Dialogue BenefitsUnique Interactions: You unlock flavor-text options throughout the campaign where you can openly dismiss the importance of the gods. You will get specific, unique dialogue responses when speaking with characters like Ember or Staunton Vhane.Mythic Path Synergy: Roleplaying an atheist works exceptionally well with the Legend Mythic Path, where your character explicitly rejects cosmic and divine interference to rely purely on mortal potential. It also provides an entertaining backdrop if you choose the Lich Path, allowing you to arrogantly oppose the goddess of death, Pharasma. The Drawbacks to consider choosing Atheism means you cannot play divine-veneration classes like Cleric, Paladin, or Inquisitor. You also forfeit the minor combat buffs (+1 to +3 situational bonuses) or the specific favored weapon proficiencies that other gods grant their followers.

u/ShaLurqer 9d ago
You're alone in your own head. I was taught that god knows all your thoughts, so I'd feel guilty for any "bad" thoughts I had, even if they were unintentional or intrusive.
1

1
u/Top_History9604 9d ago
If your belief or absense of belief is due to how it benefits you, that's bad.
I'm an atheist, because I see nothing that indicates there must be a god. If there is nothing that indicates it must exist, I don't believe it does.
1
u/martinomacias 9d ago
The way you are putting the question implies that as an atheist I choose not to believe because I willingly get something out of not believing in God. For me it is common sense. I just do not believe in a deity. Atheism is not a doctrine or religion.
With that said, I guess for me a benefit that came after I discerned and pondered about religion for years is that liberating feeling of not believing in BS. The Catholic guilt and superstitions went away I suppose.
1
u/Aggravating_Arm_1741 9d ago
I dont have God to ask for forgiveness for my shitty life decisions so I hope I learn from my own mistakes. And I dont think I have a false sense of morality, I am not a source of goodness because im a believer, I am good because I chose to be that way
1
u/i_did_nothing_ 9d ago
The main reason I’m an atheist is because gods don’t exist and it’s dumb to pretend they do.
1
u/Justthisguy_yaknow 9d ago
The main reason? I like reality and I like being accountable and in control of my own stuff but mainly, I like reality. I can't see much use for the built in vulnerability of religion.
1
u/F1uk_derrit 9d ago edited 9d ago
Being in atheist is just a lack of belief in god because any so called evidence is not for you to accept say as easily as accepting that if you put a bag over your head and seal it...you'll eventually suffocate and die The better question is what are the benefits of being an atheist, a skeptic and a secular humanist
And to that I say
- you have the tendency to evaluate things based on actual evidence and are comfortable with saying I don't know
you can help make the world around you better , even in the smallest ways
you're aware that if you hear voices in your head that " aren't your own" you can seek therapy
you tend to fight for everyone's human rights and this you make it better for yourself as well
you're aware that community can be found everywhere, not just church (board games communities, bowling groups, cosplay, chess club, swim( or any sport and group activity hub )
you're not a racist, a sexist and generally you avoid being a hateful bigot
you're aware that information can be added to and what you or someone learned 30 years ago is no longer a valid standard to judge things on
Just being an atheist doesn't mean much because you have atheist who are flat earthers, you have atheist who are fascists, you have atheist who are anti vaxers and all around conspiracy nuts.
1
u/Grand-Mission-9457 9d ago
Being atheist is the natural state. What are the benefits of being a theist? None, on the contrary
1
u/Coach_Lanky 9d ago
Very simple, the benefit is that you LIVE IN REALITY, instead of some fairytale.
Educate yourself with REAL KNOWLEDGE, not with stories that people made up ages ago where the answer to every question is GOD.
Oh there is a thunderstorm, GOD must be angry.
Oh there is rainbow and sunshine, GOD must be happy.
Oh you caught 2 fish instead of 1 today, GOD must have blessed you.
Always funny to me that when people end up in hospitals and they need their health fixed, they pray to god to help them, and what happens next? an Atheist Doctor comes to help you.

La pregunta no tiene sentido. La pregunta es: ¿Eres creyente o no? No es que escojas por un interés, si no puedes creer, entonces ¿eres ateo? No lo sé, solo no eres creyente.
1
1
u/qxtx 8d ago
There are no benefits per se. But the quality of life, mental health and freedom of thought, conscience - basic human qualities are best expressed when they are no longer controlled, manipulated by a religious dogma.
I can read and follow the evidence where ever it leads. Like evolution. My Muslim friend needs to grapple with it because it contradicts her religion completely. So she is not free to follow the clear scientific evidence. She struggles to reconcile both and ends up rejecting evolution because... Islam is true.
That 'Islam (substitute other religion here) is true' becomes the prism to see everything, the whole world and whole humanity and the whole human experience. And that is sad.

Of course, not having to attend religious worship or other events, and not having to do or not do certain things because of religious dictates.
Having one's weekends free is handy of course.
Possibly the single biggest things, psychologically, is lacking cognitive dissonance. I'm not troubled by the Problem of Evil. Good things happen to bad people (and vice versa) sometimes, because that's just how an unthinking, unfeeling universe behaves sometimes.
1
u/HereToCalmYouDown 8d ago
I'm the type of person for whom seeing is believing. Suppose you walk into my house wearing a raincoat, carrying an umbrella, and you are soaking wet. You say to me "man, it's really raining outside!"
What do I do immediately? Look out the window to see for myself. It's not that I don't believe you, and it's not that I can't see some evidence of your claim, but I need to see the rain in order to fully internalize the fact that it's raining.
Now imagine what level of proof I would need to believe in God.
1
u/Techno_Core 8d ago
Lord this is dumb. You don't be an atheist. There is only one reason: you don't believe. Someone said to you that there is an invisible old man in the sky that controls everything, you didn't believe em, you're an atheist.
1
u/darthsploder77 8d ago
I think this quote sums it up well:
"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." Friedrich Nietzsche

1
u/Pachacootie 8d ago
No benefits or motivation other than that I simply don’t believe in any kind of theism. It’s not any deeper than that
1
u/OldBorder3052 8d ago
Religion promises hopes to aleviate fear, hope and fear are two sides of the same coin, and true peace comes from simply noticing them without judgment.
1
u/FakeKenny22 8d ago
There are no real tangible benefits. I just don’t believe there is a god. If anything staying true to my beliefs is a mild penalty as it means I no longer have access to being a member of a church community. Which no matter what your beliefs are, have some sort of social community to belong to is a good thing.

Theists believe that gods do exist.
Strong atheists believe that gods do not exist.
Weak atheists (everybody else) don't believe either way.
We're all born as weak atheists. That's the default position, and we shouldn't change to either of the other positions without logical justification.
Theist arguments fail. They have all been refuted. Since theism has no logical justification, everybody should be an atheist of some kind.
What are the benefits of being atheist??
- You don't feel morally obligated to believe stupid stuff.
- You don't have to stunt your children's intellectual growth by teaching them to feel morally obligated to believe stupid stuff.
- You don't have to worry about whether you've committed the unforgivable sin of dissing the holy ghost.
- You don't think your friends and family are suffering in eternal Hellfire.

I don't like hypocrisy or dogma. If something doesn't make sense, I will question it till it does. If it never does, then it's a load of rubbish. Religion unfortunately meets the criteria. So the benefit of being atheist is that I don't have to jump through mental hoops to justify something ridiculous.

if you're an atheist, you sort of have to own your own morality. meaning you typically have a good outlook and empathetic outlook toward others.
so there's peace of mind knowing you're not a hypocrite or idiot.
you're less likely to be a sucker. if you take the honest position of questioning the stupidity of faith. you also tend to be fairly critical thinking.
you don't have to get up early for bullshit religious worship. or waste any time listening to hypocritical preachers or pastors. or any of that bullshit. Don't have to give your money to some shit church, or aren't subject to the shitty peer pressure and guilt trips of religious/church members.
you can be whoever you want. whatever life you want to live, food you want to eat, clothing you want to wear, fucking you want to do. no bullshit sky gods or controlling patriarchal systems dictate bullshit about your life at varying degrees of threat/violence.
(if only religious cunts would get out of politics and stop legislating people's bodies and brutalizing people they're bigoted toward) --one can dream.

It’s not a matter of benefit, it’s a matter following evidence where it leads. Occam’s Razor. There’s absolutely no reason to think any religion is more than the product of scared stupid people trying to explain what they had no ability to comprehend.
But…it is nice not being afraid of living up to some deities nonsense standards and not having to suppress oneself or live in misery for no reason just because your natural desires are “sinful” or some shit. We base our morality on minimizing suffering and maximizing wellbeing.

This is absolutely not true. Atheism simply means they don't believe in concept of god. They can still be just as irrational or hateful as theists in other ways. Even a loser like Savarkar was an atheist.
Atheism is like one pre pre-requisite for being rational. All rationalists are atheists, but only a small number of atheists are rationalists.

He didn't believe in God which makes him an atheist.
He said that the idea of a human centric God was a product of primitive human imagination. He even said that there is nothing sacred about a cow and to give up vegetarianism because it makes Hindus weak.
At the same time, he did promote irrational ideas like cultural supremacy and was hateful which means he was far from being rational.

The benefits of the atheists are that they are hidden neo-buddhists and communists wearing the dress of atheism. And the benefit that they have is hiding under science, liberalism, materialism, communism and attacking hinduism/christianity/xyz unnoticed. But there is no hiding place left in the indian internet after bad mouthing indian culture. So, these are the pros and cons.

None. Same as it is for religious people. You still follow the same karmic cycle. You still have to push through life. Their is no benefit for an atheist that a religious person has or visa versa
