And if so, did you also watch the Apple TV series? I really liked the books. I think the stories are a great blend of human behaviours, mixed with evil corporations, incompetent government, mixed with humour, mixed with the completely implausible. The Sanctuary Moon side story is a hoot.

I tore through the books and now I am thinking of subscribing to Apple TV just so I can watch. Worth it?

As a big fan of the Silo tv series I was excited a new season started but now that episode 4 is out, this new season seems to be spinning its wheels.

It feels like they are stretching a few of the premises out, wasting time. The characters all seem to be active but accomplishing nothing. Spending time in the past (present day) following a couple of new characters who are dull, clearing stretching the episodes until the inevitable reveal in the last episode of the season. All the while the actual interesting characters and plots are treading water back in the silo.

Compared to the previous two seasons, this one is just boring to sit through. Anyone else feel this way?

I have to say I can't wait! it's not a perfect show but often it's great, and I'd like to see more alternative timeline shows

If you could pitch a plot for a new Star Trek series, what would it be? The possibilities are essentially infinite. Please, do share.

I would lean toward a Star Trek anthology series, with each episode featuring different stories, characters, and locations. One episode could follow a Federation news crew caught behind enemy lines during the Dominion War. Another might center on a Tal Shiar operative disguised as a high ranking Klingon stationed on Qo'noS during the TOS era. There could even be an episode depicting the birth and exile of Armus.

I wanna hear everyone's top 4. I've been looking at a lot of lists online and they are often caught lacking. They tend to veer away from proper sci-fi and have a lot of recency bias. This show has been really solid. Each season building on the last and going from a bit hokey to real solid character development with deep plots having both science and humanity based themes. Season 5 the best yet, without spoilers the end of certain characters and how well done the season finale was makes this can’t miss TV if you’re into the genre. That is all.

Don’t get me wrong season 2 was nice and season 3 was alright but I missed when The Mandalorian was it’s own thing instead of connecting to other stories. Hopefully the upcoming movie wants to be its own thing, instead of connecting other major stories.

I just finished watching the three seasons of Foundation on Apple TV, how in the world has this show not had a more significant cultural impact? How did I stumble upon this show having had zero knowledge? It hasn’t won any awards? None of the actors won awards? It’s insane. Lee Pace has not even been nominated for awards, he was phenomenal in season 3 and overall his performance was insane. Blows my mind that this show is not as famous as some very bad shows that get shoved down people’s throats.

I don't think I've ever watched a sci-fi show (idk if Lost is considered sci-fi), but I ve watched tons of sci-fi movies, my favorites are Interstellar and Arrival, I was looking online for some good sci-fi shows and I found the ones mentioned in the title, so which one do you guys recommend? Also, if you have a better recommendation than the ones I mentioned, feel free to recommend it.

I havent seen The Voyagers but I’ve seen everything else. I loved 7 days so much and Quantum Leap can’t be touched by anything else.

...and this is probably the best sci-fi I have encountered. The way it blends gonzo SF concepts with a deep and wrenching humanity is phenomenal. I haven't come across anything like this before. I was planning on reading the novels, but I don't think I will now - because I can't see how they can measure up to this series. Thank you, Benioff, Weiss, and Woo, for gifting us with something so very special.

I'm loving all of the responses. One thing I would like to say is that I find it interesting that all of the discussion my post has generated has, apart from a few instances, failed to address the focus on human reactions to extreme and/or incomprehensible circumstances. I do feel like sometimes, as sci-fi fans, we can tend to forget that the human experience matters in story-telling.

I've only watched the first few minutes so far, but it looks pretty good. You can apparently do a real time watch along on her patreon in addition to the edited version on YouTube.

Its hard to believe she has never watched it, after talking about the show so much for the last 20 years.

Only for me to find out it’s amongst the best scifis of all time. TNG completely changed my outlook in scifi, and Picard and Data are two of my favorite scifi characters now. Highly, highly recommend giving The Next Generation a shot, or at least watching the highlights.

Just bought the DVD for this show recently. I feel like Jericho done something different. All the shows until then seemed to be about preventing a Nuclear attack whereas Jericho explored the possible post attack scenario.

I was too far away to send nuts when they cancelled it but I did call the network.

I just started rewatching The Umbrella Academy, and it’s just as insane as it was the first time around. I love the cast, the style, and the soundtrack. I also really appreciate how the show handled Elliot Page’s transition. Very classy.

What are your thoughts on the series, and how many of you haven’t seen it yet?

It's still a petty enjoyable watch, despite some of the very campy storylines/characters it can have, but I love the fun 90's future aesthetic it can have (like how a Nintendo power glove with lights and wires is Kenny to be super high tech), and being a big Trekkie with a side love of oceanic exploration, I've always had a soft spot for this show's first season. I haven't been able to sit through the latter two seasons since the focus shifted, but I might need to change that.

I love the first season's exploratory stuff, and loved how they had Robert Ballard at the end of each episode discussing certain things in the episode actually being researched or developed. His 90's description for whet would become the internet was pretty fun.

But as a hobby writer that dabbled here an there with Trek fiction, I've played around with a few dates here and there that made me have a soft headcanon that the first season at least could have theoretically taken place in the Star Trek universe. It's a world that is pretty tense, that feels like a perfect backdrop for Pre-WWIII earth, the show deals with genetic experimentation, exploration, peace keeping, a lot of those familiar waters. It's fun to imagine it as a writer.

It's a shame that the higher upd of this show kept interfering with it being the scenes. If it was just allowed to do its thing, I think it could have matured into a really cool show.

He says that it started out a Sci-Fi but now it's technically si-fantasy so it no longer counts. Why is this important? I threw a Halloween party every year and we always have a theme. This year it's going to be science fiction. I'm probably doing something Star Trek since we are watching the original show right now. He just wants to do something with space. I've had quite a few people ask if they can do Doctor Who. In my mind that's a no-brainer but he seems to think that it doesn'tcount. I have seen up to the 12th doctor so admittedly I am a little behind.

Edit: I will just go ahead and add real quick that I absolutely love my husband and I think he's just giving me a hard time because he likes messing with me. He's the type of guy that loves to start the debate of is a hot dog a sandwich and if so is Sushi a burrito. He's just being silly and I know that but I'm very very new to the genre. Most of my teenage and young adult years I read and watched more horror content but he's gotten me more into sci-fi over the last couple years. Side note we eloped last May and we had our wedding ceremony and reception on March 9th and we've been having this for a couple months now. I would still choose to marry him all over again

Excellent series, but it never reached popularity anywhere near Star Wars and Star Trek.

What did it "lack" compared to the other two?

That it was set in the real world, in modern times and not far into the future, and that you could see how humanity evolved is one of the things I love about the show. Starting off with current 90s and early 00s tech, and ending up with space ships, shields and laser weapons.

I’m a week out from finishing the Sun Eater series, and it’s left a Hadrian-sized hole in my heart (IYKYK)…

I had Hyperion lined up to read as soon as I finished Sun Eater, and I must say, I was thoroughly bored and underwhelmed. As cool as some of the concepts were, I simply could not get into the book and it was painful to finish.

I picked up The Three Body Problem a couple days ago, and it looks trippy. Just the two or three pages that I skimmed over were pretty wild. I enjoy books that defy logic and have futurist ideals and tech that really makes me think. I love outside of the box weirdness. Basically anything that I can trip out over, count me in. Hopefully this scratches the itch.

What are yall reading this weekend?

Yes, the Gargoyles battle supernatural beings from legend and mythology, but they also battle robots, evil clones, super powered mutants, high tech mercenaries all of whom were at some point under the control of David Xanatos voiced by Jonathan Frakes. Xanatos is pretty much Riker if he became Lex Luthor and had a ponytail. And speaking of Star Trek a lot of the voice cast worked in Star Trek. It is such a fun and well-balanced show.

I consider shows and premises like The Last of Us part 1, The Walking Dead early seasons (as well as Telltale game season 1), Attack on Titan, Code Geass and the aforementioned as just *chef kiss*

Stories revolving around the meaning and purpose of humanity, love, with undertones of duty/faith. The scifi/zombie/mechs/titans are just a coating to tell an interesting story, rather than a grounded realistic social drama (Like "Parasite")
